Boswell:
Rankine looking dangerous inside 50 already to start the third term. Just roved a tap deep inside 50 but had his quick kick caught on the line. Suns moving the ball much better early in this quarter. Finally getting some run off halfback, with Markov a key instigator.

1’ GOAL SUNS: Ainsworth with an early goal for the Suns, snapping on the right foot. Lions lead by 30.

David Swallow and Matt Rowell are done for the day. Both have changed into their runners and are off to do laps

The pickle juice is out! Both Hugh Greenwood and Noah Anderson have guzzled down the average-tasting liquid to hold off leg cramps.

13’ GOAL LIONS: Hipwood with another from the set shot, this time 40m out on the angle. He and Daniher now both with four goals. Lions by 49.

9’ GOAL LIONS: Turnover across halfback for the Suns and Zorko spots Hipwood on the chest. He goes back and kicks his third of the day. Lions back out to 43 points.

Gold Coast extremely unlucky while going for goal. Izak Rankine gathered the ball in the pocket and squared it to Ben Ainsworth before it went on to Noah Anderson and Brandon Ellis who hit it across hit it across his body in the right foot from 40m out to slot a major. The brilliant piece of play was halted by the umpire who called a free kick against Ben King in the goal square. Brisbane went up the field and scored moments later.

23’ GOAL SUNS:
Best movement all day from Gold Coast, resulting in a Rankine goal. Markov started it off halfback, burning Charlie Cameron and dishing to Ellis, who spots King inside 50. King spoils down to Rankine who does the rest from a tight angle. Good footy Suns. Lions by 43 points.

Hi all, how's Brodie looking today? Any chance he plays as a midfielder in your best 22 round 1?

Won’t be starting in the middle, but in the running for a spot in the 22. If he’s selected you would expect to see him play some minutes in the middle.

Hard to tell how he’s going today with no livestream, but he’s kicked 2 goals so the talk of his forwardcraft improving seems to be right.

26’ GOAL SUNS: Great coast to coast play from the Suns off the kick-in, resulting in Ainsworth’s second goal - an ugly looking punt that sails straight through the middle. Lions by 42 points.

26’ BEHIND LIONS: Hipwood pulling out his bag of tricks, takes a snap from on the 50m arc and boundary and hits the near post halfway up.

Boswell:
A much better quarter from the Suns, who finally showed some good ball movement off half back. King hasn’t plucked one yet but has looked a threat up forward and Rankine has one but could have three goals, such has been his presence.

Markov’s dash will be an absolute asset for the Suns this year. He’s broken the game open a few times with his pace.

Macpherson and Anderson have also impressed.

Yeah pretty even after 1st quarter. When burgess is rucking against Andrews probably shows its not 100 % serious from either side. Sounds like Markov is doing well which is encouraging

FULL TIME AT METRICON

The Brisbane Lions 15.12-102 defeat the Gold Coast Suns 8.7-55.

All the damage from the Lions came in the first quarter, when they opened up a 35-point lead at the first break. Suns were better after that but could never drop the margin under five goals.

Boswell's summary:

BOOM Lions recruit Joe Daniher has led Brisbane to a 47-point win over Gold Coast in a scratch match at Metricon Stadium.
Daniher took advantage of a Suns team without key defenders Sam Collins and Rory Thompson, slotting four goals, including two in the first term, in his first competitive game since making the move from Essendon as Brisbane ran out 15.12 (102) to 8.7 (55) winners.

The absence of Gold Coast’s keys left young defender Caleb Graham to do the job, along with Charlie Ballard and Jack Bowes who battled undersized against the 201cm giant.

Collins is expected to be back to full fitness next week after battling a foot complaint while Thompson remains on the long term injury list.

Brisbane torched a lacklustre Suns in the first term, kicking seven goals to one to take a 35-point lead into the second.

Gold Coast were being punished for kicking short too often early, putting themselves under pressure and turning the ball over while Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale pushed forward dangerously from stoppages.

The Suns steadied in the remaining three quarters, equalling Brisbane’s efforts in the contest as the margin barely moved.

Wil Powell, Alex Sexton and Chris Burgess were left out of Gold Coast’s rotations in the first term while Matt Rowell and David Swallow were rested after halftime.

Ben King came off with a lower leg complaint at the end of the first quarter but was moving freely and played on while Jarrod Witts returned from a split eye in the second term.

Suns recruit Oleg Markov was impressive in the backline, showing pace while rebounding and using the ball well going forward.
Swallow, Witts, Jarrod Harbrow, Touk Mille, Ben Ainsworth and Sean Lemmens were among Gold Coast’s best while Will Brodie put in a good audition for a spot in the best 22, months after asking for a trade.
Daniher was among Brisbane’s best, along with Cam Rayner, Eric Hipwood, Callum Ah Chee, Harris Andrews and Hugh McCluggage.
