Gold Coast's draft rules explained

So how many flags in a row does everyone think GC will win?? I think the draft and salary concessions go far too far and aren't in the "spirit of the game" Andrew D is so quick to remind us all of. I am generally a skeptical person, but i'm sure i'm not alone in thinking that somewhere in the Gold Coast grand plan it has been mentioned behind closed doors that one of the KPI's for setting up this club is that it must win a premiership within it's first five years.

Can anyone fill me in on what draft/salary cap concessions Port and Freo had when they entered the league?

Just remember your club Hawthorn agreed to all concessions reguarding the Gold Coast , if we get back to back premierships , have a go at your own clubs board.

The real issue will be what mature players GC have, can't play 22 18 yo's and be competitive in 2010 at VFL level let alone 22 19yo's in 2011 at AFL level. Am told that any mature state league players approached will have to give up work and train fulltime for no coin, should get some back from campaigner if he is not overseas.

We will get 16 uncontracted players , from that will be the basis of our team in 2011 , adding to that will be any mature age players we pick up , as i see it , it is the only way to do it without disturbing the apple cart , have some high class youngsters mixed with 16-20 modern day oplayers of what quality im not sure of just yet.

You have access to 16 uncontracted players, but at the moment players going into next season without extending their contract are being almost looked upon has traitors because their club will get nothing (e.g. Beams at the start of this year). It is very unlikely GC will get more than 1-2 decent uncontracted players.

IMO the AFL should have spread the draft picks over a few years and given GC no 1 pick in the pre season draft for a few years instead of free access to uncontracted players. There was no need to get all players at once. With the structure at the moment GC could be really really good with in 3-5 years and win a flag before anyone really cares about them or could be really really bad if this crop of kids is no good and don’t get decent uncontracted players.

Is the AFL compensation arbitrator? I understand that there is an equation or sorts for it. And if there are two players worth the same pick or compensation amount is it first in (signed) best dressed?

While I cant answer your question specifically, and hopefully someone can, I did read an interesting article in the HUN about Ablett and pick 26, and it did raise some issues about compensation and how it works to benefit teams not immediately, but over time, however this may be off point.

The thing that gets me is that if the AFL is a compensation arbitrator, then like Leigh Matthews said last night, there is a massive conflict of interest from the AFL who are fitting an enormous bill to our club as well as acting on behalf of the interests of other clubs, seemingly conflicting their duty to the other clubs in pursuit of immediate success for the two new clubs coming in. Interesting times indeed.

Priority picks gift clubs premierships - Ala Hawthorn

The rule needs to go anyway, will remove tanking to a degree...

I seriously fail to see the difference between the picks that the Gold Coast get are different to the picks that Richmond have had for the past few years.

You could argue that Richmond were gifted a premiership with that logic.

No but seriously, this sucks. The draft picks this team gets are ridiculous as are the salary cap concessions. If they want to play with everyone else then make them earn their spot. The AFL already gifted Brisbane and Sydney premierships by allowing extra salary caps and it looks like these two new teams are gauranteed premierships again.

And stereophonic if you want to bring up "oh but your club got priority picks", yes the priority pick system was crap as well.

Why does the AFL insist on treating people like they are clients of some insurance company, it is a freakin sport and it is there for the people who love the sport. The people who run the AFL do not 'own' it they are merely its custodians.

100 plus goal per season forward who can run like the wind? Players like that dont come round too often, you can build a team around that, and that is what Hawthorn did. Not taking away from the fact that Hawthorn played like a 'team' all September last year, not this year though.

The part you dont understand is that your club Richmond , along with the other 15 clubs signed off on this , no blaming us or the AFL , blame your own club if you dont like.

I think Hawthorn will be fine in the draft we will just have to beat GC and other clubs at Will Langford but will be getting Trent Stubbs and Thomas Kickett before hand anyway because of the NSW Scholarship Program!

Wrong, other way round Dogs had picks #3 and #6 and Franklin went at #5.

Sure GC are going to be a force in 3-4 years but equally they will also have some pretty big salary cap pressures by that stage even with the extra cash. All of those young guns will be coming off contract and demanding fairly significant upgrades to their contracts by that stage.

Clubs rebuilding at that stage will be the winners out of that as their stars retire and they have significant salary cap room to poach the 4th year players that GC have developed.

If i was a mid aged player signing a 3 year contract with GC now I would be a bit worried that I wouldn't get another one from them after that. if you're 28-29 its ok as you probably don't need one but that 26 age may be a bit dicey. Can always get traded somewhere else though I suppose.

If they are smart about it , it should'nt be a problem , they will front load wages for the stars of today , to free up cash for the stars of tommorow.
