SEN bloke just said there's interest in Talia but he's likely to stay in SA as he has business interests and his wife has a well paid career. Contradicts Talia's own words about having 3-4 years left. I'm guessing that whatever 8nterest is out there isn't at the $500k x 3 that he would have expected he deserved. Interesting this is coming out after Tigers go for Tarrant. Sounds like Talia has discovered his value in the marketplace.

Thought it was reported a week ago, Talia was likely to retire .....you're correct, business inerests and his wife's career, would see him stay in SA

An unfit talia you mean
Fit and unfit are the same thing if you're going to continually put your hand up to play no matter how impeded. If being unfit impacted selection then you could draw the differentiation.

I mean players put their hands up to play games and they are getting pain killing injections just to get on the park. Apparently steven may played the GF with a tear in his hamstring. He was ok but not at his best. Players are playing with injury all the time. The question is are they as effective as they would be if they were not being patched up to play with injury. I say no, how can they be
Injury match payments aren’t that flattering
Top tier players are on flat contracts. Base plus games are for fringe dwellers or guys with dicey injury histories.

Players like Talia and May wouldn't be getting match payments. Maybe some contract bonuses, but that wouldn't be what motivates them.
If a player gets injured during an AFL match and miss games they get paid the same amount as if they would if they were out there.
Talia just missed the entire season due to injury. You think any offers he receives won't be heavily based on match payments? Surely he'd be looking at options with low base salaries, but high match payments and bonuses.

Until they return to the afl team (not just back playing any level. Good deal as a fringe player who gets injured at afl level and would struggle to return to the team regardless!

would have believed he was entitled to a contract regardless of his ability to fulfil his end of the bargain. And he would have flatly refused a contract that reflected where he was at.
Under previous regimes he would have got another year.

So you can't understand why a guy who has been an AA player, not yet hit 30 and missed just one season of AFL football might be upset at being dumped by his club?
It's within our best interests to move on and keep blooding younger players but I don't blame him one bit for being upset at the situation as he clearly cares about his own career - which is probably why he's been so damn good in his position for so long.

Should target the midseason draft at a contender who are short of a key defender
Completely understand him being upset, but unfortunately the reality is in professional sport that you are being very well paid to provide a service. If you can no longer deliver this service to the level required, then it is unfortunate for both parties. However with limited list spots and a limited budget, the reality is that you cannot be offered a new contract. Otherwise you are found a different role in the club and then it becomes another 'jobs for the boys' argument.
Thankfully Daniel has by all reports, been a shrewd operator and ensured he has a career outside of playing AFL football.
An unfortunate situation but a reality of the game.
He'd probably have refused a reasonable contract that reflected where his injury is at and the risk we were taking. And I expect he overrated his value in the marketplace. That we were prepared to retain Mackay shows we haven't been that ruthless and we've still got 2 unsigned guys that Talia would likely have been retained ahead of.
