What I don't understand is how the degree of the tear isn't discovered until end of season scans. Surely our coaches and other staff/players noticed his lack of ability to turn at training or train at all. At the elite level, how does a player not have those scans to see what the damage is to ensure it's not of the type that could get worse and that playing jabbed up is perfectly ok. We can't force him to get scans to determine the extent of the injury, but we also don't have to play him if we think he's too injured, thereby forcing his hand anyway.

Reality is that he wantEd to play despite the nature of the injury and if he was happy to do that then we're happy not knowing and selecting him.
It's just staggering that he even thought he COULD play through the pain. I had a torn meniscus a few years ago and it was absolute agony! Because it was a tear at the back (where there is little blood flow) they couldn't even do surgery to repair it. Just had to let it repair (or not) on its own. I reckon it took a couple of years to come good.

I guess it shows his desire to play out a spoon season. There's no logic to his decision or that of the coaches to let him. But we saw it again this year with Sloane and him risking lifetime damage by not getting the operation done straight away. But, what I can understand re Sloane is that they had it assessed, knew the issue, knew how it would impact his performance and knew the risk that was being taken by not concluding his season then and there and having the necessary surgery. Talia flat out stated that they were surprised at the extent of the injury when they finally looked into it at the end of the season. That's utter madness.

So you can't understand why a guy who has been an AA player, not yet hit 30 and missed just one season of AFL football might be upset at being dumped by his club?

It's within our best interests to move on and keep blooding younger players but I don't blame him one bit for being upset at the situation as he clearly cares about his own career - which is probably why he's been so damn good in his position for so long.
I do blame Talia .....advised today via his Manager that he has to have another operation on his foot

So if the foot wasn't 100% ..why put your hand up to play in 2022 ...and be so upset at not getting a contract

Nah, he has been one of my favourite players but you have to take the best people.

Those roles shouldn't be to soften the blow of delisting. It wasn't a huge surprise and he could of done more if he really wanted to go down that path.

He has obviously invested well over the years but I think he will miss the 500k+ per year salary.

I think he'd be a great development coach for the team. I know this board has a thing for not giving coaching roles to ex players and line coaches, I agree, get out of our system and come back but a development coach for a couple of years and then move out is a good move. I don't think it is a move for everyone we have in our side retiring but good talent should not be let go...particularly one that won't be a yes man.

As for softening the blow of delisting, we have given him the chance to find another team but i think he is now hearing what we said was right, his playing career is done, time to move forward

Yeah im a bit confused about it and I think the Crows have a right to be a bit miffed about the pr stunting.

Im wondering if he thought a club might back him to go through rehab for a possible return mid next season. No wonder the family didn't want to move. Huge move if there is no return. Tbh I think he'd be best finding a sanfl club and play a few years like Gibbs.

Actually, Pickering didn't say that he'd retired, just that he wasn't going to be playing AFL next season. I clearly heard it said this way a couple of times, but perhaps I missed the word retirement but I don't think it was mentioned by Pickers or asked in a clarification sense by the SEN dude. In terms of being a development coach, I think his approach to playing injured makes him seriously flawed in that regard. I wouldn't have any of our senior players from the last few years anywhere near our junior players. I think we need to move on from the Thommo, Sauce, Talia, Tex and Sloane brigade as soon as their playing days are over. I'm still not that happy that VB returned, despite having been at West Coast, because I'm convinced he'd be a key driver of the 4 man midfield strategy and encouraging injured guys suiting up.

Give him a rookie contract and get him rehabbing and training with the group, and also some corporate shmoozing work.
You could still pick Talia up in the mid-season Draft, if his body is OK by then .....and of course if he's committed

Yeah was it not possible for us to do this? We have done more for players who have given less in the past. Perhaps we suggested it and he told us to go jump.

I cant see a club picking him up.... because of the nature of the injury and the length he has been out

This latest update further validates the clubs decision

Tend to agree .....but maybe one of the finalists come June, have a run of injuries to DEF players .....he could be a "break glass" solution

But I'm tending to think by then Talia will have his feet up watching SAS ....whatever that is

Because like most people he likes the concept of getting money?
