Unfortunately for both Talia and Lynch they were just old and injury prone at the wrong time. We need to build an elite side and the only way we will get that is through development via games. I think the club as done an outstanding job by being upfront with the players now so they can find new homes. That's why they have done it. The realistic approach is we aren't going to be vying for finals anyway next season. No point playing seasoned veterans only to have them disappear when we finally make finals and we fall away again. May as well create a rocking list full of depth that will see us for a decade or more. It sucks as in an ideal world we could reward such outstanding players. Just can't ideally

Okay with this one, I have mixed emotions. Defenders generally can endure a bit longer, but poor Tals couldn’t get his body right while we are in a true rebuild. They really want to start from scratch! Did I hear that that they aren’t giving M Crouch a big contract or similar ? He’ll probably look around too! Who else is on the chopping block?

but going back to Talia! I won’t lie, this decision has saddened me! It’s in line with our rebuild direction, but I’m genuinely sad anyway!

Those are the same idiots who think Dmac is a hard done by, underrated player.

News over the last couple of days blows a hole in the myth ....the club won't play kids in preference to older players

It's always depended on where the club is in the cycle .....Finals contention or rebuilding

That said in any circumstance ....cream rises to the top ....ATM we're playing a lot of kids to see who cuts the mustard

Don't have an issue with it, we need to get all of the older guys out now tbh. Talia and lynch, have been great servers but won't be anywhere near our next flag.

Over 20 years between flags, maybe the penny's dropped and the club knows this isn't good enough anymore.

Guessing he has some sort of relationship with Truck
Yep ....and Hooker likely to go anyway, but more likely if Talia is available .......Talia for free would be enticing

It's an interesting argument.

There's 2 list management theories I feel.

If we kept Talia and Lynch, it's the traditional Crows method. Maintain list balance, and hope things go right one year (2012) or we nail a few trades/free agency (2016-17) while never really bottoming out

Then there's this approach, knowing they're not going to be here for the challenge, so get them out and bring in the kids. The worry is, do we get a Hawthorn/Richmond result, or do we get a Carlton/Gold Coast result.

The issue is though, we already have a hole in 1 spot in our list (ie, those who we should've been blooding around 2016-18)
If we dont nail the 2020-22 drafts or nail free agency/trades. I think the Carlton/Gold Coast result is more likely.

How about the scary option - Talia gets picked up by Port as a delisted free agent. We get nothing for him and he instantly makes their backline a whole lot better (assuming he gets over his injury)
Look at how his career went

When Alex Rance played, I felt Talia was the best defender in the league. Nearly impossible to score on him.
Then around when Rance left, Talia regressed due to injuries to the point Hartigan was a more reliable defender for us.

If any club could get the best out of him, it's a scary proposition.
But I think his best is long behind him right now.

Yeah, he'd still improve every team in the league. But he doesn't scare me anymore.

My worry is IF port picked him up, straight away he slots into full back and can shut down the oppo key forward - that bit is beyond dispute as long as he is playing uninjured. Then Alir can intercept with Jonas playing on the oppo second tall. It makes their back half structure so much better and then if they win enough ball in midfield, they are going to be a better side all round..and I really really don't like that thought

I hate it.

Relative to his role, he has been our best player in the past decade. 29 is not that old especially considering other elite KPDs like Brian Lake and Harry Taylor played at a high level well into their early 30s. Unless his injury prognosis is completely horrible I don't see why he wouldn't still be good to very good for several more years.

And that's not taking into account the mentorship aspect. How many young players coming through our system cite Talia as being immensely helpful to their development? I don't think guys like Lever, Doedee, Butts become so good so quick without his presence.

I think the key factor here was basically missing nearly 18 months of footy, his body is just totally shot. Another pre season is highly unlikely to change anything which our Medicos would have known. Even *if* he got fit, he would have to play at least 2-3 games in the 2s and get through unscathed to be even considered for an AFL Game. Would be hard to see him getting through medicals at other clubs in next few months.

Can vividly remember last year when Talia was absolutely cooked playing and Naughton kicked 7 on him.

DT has set himself up very well off field too.

A sad way to finish by such a club legend. Well done Tals.

I doubt age is the factor in moving him on, moreso the condition of his body at this point.

By all accounts Talia has been fastidious in his rehab/preparation from day 1 with us so the club must have serious doubts as to him getting back to anything like his best from here, that, and the fact just like Lynch we have to get games into our promising youngsters.

He hasn't trained for 18 mths, or played for 12 mths

There is your injury prognosis

You dont actually believe that horseshit you just wrote do you?..

the only games lynch hasnt played this year are the ones he was injured to the point he could barely walk.. and even then they put him as the sub.

Talia, if he wasnt injured, wouldve played every single game from round 1.

youre delusional if you think otherwise and he’d be getting another year for sure.

Powaa aren't winning a flag anytime soon. I wouldn't be concerned with them.
I hope you're right. But I feel worse about them this year than last. What's the feeling with finals hub? Surely wouldn't be in SA. I heard WA got knocked back.

Only way port win in VIC is if there's no crowds and that looking likely. Starting to get worried.

The club statement makes it pretty clear that his body didn't respond well to recent surgery and rehab. I'm not entirely sure he passes a medical if he tries to make it to another club.
Even the last couple of years, the reports Talia was very sore between games was well known ....I'm sure he played a lot of games under duress

It was the right call ....and whilst I doubt Talia would move for a 12 month Contract, at 29 yo he should be able to secure a 2 year Contract in Victoria, close to his parents

I imagine these nuffies would have been throwing tantrums end of the 1996 season too.

These are the type of list management decisions we should be making, not the garbage Jenkins, Sloane multi year big dollars until you're 32/33 anchor around our neck deals.

Which were insane because we allow these guys to play injured, get more ****ed up and we are then completely surprised that their bodies fall apart when they hit 30.

Pretty much, if he was a chance a being able to go around again, we'd have kept him, even on a one year contract. I isn't about not being around when the next tilt happens, it's about a guy who breaks down doing laps of the oval.

It is a sad day, loved watching him destroy oppo forwards but sentiment does not make a successful club, if he can't ,ake a difference, we need to move on.
