It's a sad end, but the right call. Murray and Butts need as many opportunities as they can get and even Frampton is showing he might actually have a future as a defender. The back 6 have been fine this year, its the midfield that's let them down, you can't defend 60 odd I50s every week.

I honestly don't know mate, it just makes no sense for us to telegraph the fact that we won't offer them a new contract if there was a possibility of compensation. Which in this case Lynch would almost certainly get us something.

If no one grabs them during the Free Agency period it also opens up the possibility of their parent club reconsidering whether to take them or not, as my guess is that we can still change our mind up until list lodgement after free agency.

It's a weird scenario for sure.
Why is it weird, they're giving the players and their management plenty of time to make whatever arrangements they need to do while still on our books.

Rahilly said in Tom's case he wanted to know one way or the other whether he was going to be offered a contract or not so it sounds like he brought discussions to a head.

That leaves walker, Sloane, smith, Seedsman as our oldest players/veterans/leadership.

Jeez these poor kids.

Although I would say the only real influencers for the kids this season have been walker and maybe a little bit lynch. Don't know how much impact Sloane and Talia have off the field but if we go in next season with just walker and Sloane as vets, one of them embroiled in a racism debacle and the other can't get on the field, that's pretty tough being a 21yo at AFC.

Sad end for him.

I wonder how bad the injury is? If okay would definitely be a good piece for a lot of clubs.

Reality for us is that Butts has almost already replaced him like for like. He still has some things to learn, but we have an excellent stopper.

Talia would have just been holding back games from players like Murray and McAsey (if we go with him in defence).

Hopefully Mackay is next. I'd like to see Kelly gone but unless a club tries to get him, pretty sure he is staying.

Laird and Keays.

Brown down back.

Up forward we're going to struggle imo.

Like I've said in the past, 2023 is the earliest we'll start looking at the 8 again. Next year will be another tough one.

Yeah, I'd agree with this, I think if Butts and Murray hadn't shown much, then we'd likely have offered Talia another year, but they (especially Butts who's been outstanding) have shown real progress this year. All the best to Talia - he's been a great stalwart over the years!

I take this as showing that there's not a lot of confidence he'd play more than half of the season, but we'll find out pretty soon if he finds another club because if fit he will have no trouble.

Yep. Hawthorn did this with Henderson, I think

Take Hinge for example.

His contract ran out with Brisbane, no offers came in during Free Agency and he wasn't de-listed formally until late November, WELL after the FA period had ended.

It was during this time that Brisbane actually offered him a 1 year deal, which he rejected and ASKED to be de-listed by Brisbane.

There's got to be more to it with BOTH of them being told early than just 'good etiquette'.

I don’t think Daniel Talia wouldn’t want to join us I remember reading the Talia family cutting ties with the club
Yeah, Bevo burnt those bridges with his over the top antics.

Then joined the Crows in the DFA period.

So why would a club "help" us out when they know he's going to be available as a DFA?
Because another club might get him?

If they're paying the same price for Daniel, why do they give a shit that we get pick 40?

Most free agents aren't going back to their clubs - why aren't all free agents DFAs?

This announcement is about a public statement to acknowledge Daniel before the end of the year, same as Lynch. His management - and therefore every club - would have known what we were doing well before it was public.

Can't they just battle it out in the DFA market for his signature?
Why don't more UFAs just end up as delisted free agents then?

A club is going to want to secure him. They'll sign him and we'll get a middling pick.

Or there will be no one who wants to offer him money that would trigger compo, which means he only has one bidder. In that case, maybe he does just wait it out because there's no other options.

None you'd back to do a job on a Hipwood/Daniher/Cameron/Hawkins in a big final the way you'd back Talia though.
I’d probably only back Daniel in against Hawkins in that lot.
The others too agile imo.
Surprisingly McKenzie has come in a done a decent job on bigger players.
Clurey (who has done well on Tex) has been pushed out by McKenzie and then there’s Jonas and Alir.

Yeah, I think Essendon is more likely.

Yep. Hawthorn did this with Henderson, I think
But they didn't with Hartigan. Why didn't they just wait and get him as a DFA?

Henderson had been delisted and well off the list before Hawthorn signed him.

My guess is we either know he has little interest, or are confident that even if there was interest, the contract terms aren't enough to get us any compensation.

From memory players like Mayne required pretty significant contracts for players of that age, clubs would probably need to give Talia/Lynch 2-3 years on $500k+ and maybe there's just not that level of interest
Maybe.

It also has to be two years for compo, so maybe we know both have one year deals on the table.

There has to be a reason the club has done it. It's not like it's particularly disruptive.

It probably has something to do with clubs still wanting most UFAs to stay at their club even for a short/cheap contract

We don't want Lynch or Talia at all

Really sad, if not inevitable. Would love for him to have had a farewell game - he deserved it.

He's actually one of those I'd like to have stayed with the club in some capacity. His speech at the Club Champion award said as much to me about him as his efforts on the field. Didn't seem afraid to call things as he saw it, which is invaluable in a club like ours.

Go well Daniel (and hi to your cat).

Didn't we trade Hartigan to Hawthorn for a nothing pick?
Yep, good point. They gave us a fourth I think, so their Isaac Smith compo wasn't effected.
