2005 we lost our chance when we lost to the Saints in the QF at home, and had to then play a prelim v WC in Perth we were never going to win.

Why did we lose the game to the Saints? IMO, because Craig refused to tag Robert Harvey because "good teams don't tag". His inflexible, stubborn approach to not not considering what the opposition were doing, cost us the game.

R. Harvey:
17 kicks
14 HB
11 marks
3 goals
6 tackles
7 I50
5 clearances

James Gwilt of all people killed us that game too

You think we have Roo and Bock we lose that?

Finals are often decided by champions. They had their brownlow medalist and he almost won them the game single handed. Ours was sitting on the sideline because of a brain fart one week prior.

You're probably right, I guess it was the same when Lance Franklin kicked 7 on Kris Masie to win the elimination final.

Roo, Bock, McLeod and Goodwin all played that game.

You for real in your comparison? Surely not.

Comparing 2007 injured and past it Roo to 2005 All Australian Captain Roo is like comparing your posting to someone with a valid point.

You may have missed the point, but thanks for taking the time to read it and responding.

It was very clever, thanks, I'll take the feedback on board.

Yeah - you right.

Maybe we could start a petition to get his 2005 Allen Jeans Senior Coach of the year award revoked!

Dear AFL,

We would like to petition for the removal of Neil Craig's 2005 Allen Jeans Senior Coach award on the grounds he is a bad coach. The Adelaide Football club were only good in 2005/2006 because Gary Ayres left and everyone became happy. We also had no injuries during this time (apart from Ben Hudson, Trent Henstchel, Roo for 3/5 finals and Biglands doing his ACL in the 1st quarter of a prelim).

I realise that this award is done on a voting system by other current AFL coaches, but I am not sure the coaching fraternity that included Sheedy, Malthouse, Leigh Mathews, Clarkson, Bomber Thompson, Worsfold, Longmire, and Choco Williams knew the above information when they voted.

Kind Regards,

The entire world.

More words dedicated to being wrong. Now you're relying on an award. How precious.

saint kilda were missing both their key defenders. They had other outs, and were seriously underdone too

we were expected to obliterate them for a reason, which included our form that year, that it was home, and all the STK outs.

we were supposed to have a field day against them, but it was Harvey who had the field day being left unchecked. Goodwin went head to head if memory serves

Edit: just checked, StK were missing
Matt Maguire
Max Hudgton
Their 2 KPD’s, plus Kozi and Gehrig was under a major injury cloud after their round 22 game. Gehrig played but shouldn’t have

they had no tall stocks and we should have destroyed them.

maybe complacency was a factor, but Craig’s coaching was an issue. Something recognised during the game itself

Valid points and in truth history won't show Craig as a famed match day tactician.

In regards to him as an overall coach (which there is a hell of a lot more to than what happens for 2 hours each week) he was a damn good coach in 2005 & 2006. I will die on that hill. Our lack of premiership success in 05/06 is more on Roo being out than Craig's failings.

Bottom line - when we won a flag in 97 we were able to cover injuries to two All Australians (Modra and Ricciuto) as well as a very handy forward in Vardy. We didn't win in 2005 and 2006 because we didn't have enough depth to cover players of similar calibre.

And we had a coach that wouldn't have played a ruckman at CHB, thrown a half back forward at the opening bounce or sent a mid deep forward after half time. Craig would have done none of those things and there's no doubt that had he coached 97/98 we'd have zero premierships in the cabinet. We're still exorcising his stench of failure from the place. His philosophies infect us still. Which is why Balme would have been awesome.

But that was just an event. We took learnings and and all we needed to do was work harder and be better at what we do. There's always next weekend and another 4 points up for grabs.

I 100% agree that Neil Craig made some key mistakes in big games, and that’s part the reason why we didn’t get a flag in that era. However, it is grossly unfair to say that all of the bad stuff was his fault, and act like all of the good, minor premiers, two prelims, five straight finals series, was entirely due to the players and he had nothing to do with it.

History will show he was a good coach, unfortunately just not a great one, much like that team.

It’s also dumb to say Roo getting suspended was the reason we didn’t win the QF. We missed Sloane* in the 2017 QF and still got the win because that’s what you have to do to make GFs sometimes.

*I’m not saying Sloane and Roo are equals.

We just have to keep putting ourselves in that position again and our time wil come.

His game plan was solid, but not adaptable to when opposition stopped it.

I'm all for doing most of the work during the week but in big games, you also need to coach gameday.

Pyke was a replica in that sense. When we were beaten it was the exact same way every time. Suffocate us around the contest and extra numbers in our forward line. When we hacked forward under pressure (we don’t run with the ball out of contests) opponents win possession and run hard at us between the arcs under no pressure. A front running forward group didn’t help. You can’t leave your entire forward 50 pressure system to 1 or 2 players. They all need to have a crack.

Yeah exactly, if the game plan worked for Craig/Pyke, it was relative happy days, however when it didn't, we really broke down.

We’d actually have been better going backwards or sideways out of contests. Our steadfast refusal to take into account the quality of our clearances handicaps us still. I’d rather our guys get pinged HTB whilst looking for an option ahead of coughing it up to loose defenders in open play.

Goddard was out too, and Montagna was under an injury cloud from the week before (I’ve been Googling!)

they were seriously short handed

Craig had his time and moments, but he was ultimately undone by his lack of flexibility and that the league worked him out. His inflexibility also alienated a lot of young players

I think his rigid game plan and style will be seen, has been seen, to not work in finals

he innovated and brought new IP to the league but once that was absorbed and countered by the rest of the league he didn’t have anywhere left to go.

and his last couple of years were a car crash

Cornesy Comments After Daniel Talia Reveals “Issues” With Crows

18min 55secs is the Talia bit - it would have been great if a fantastic one club player didn't end as it did. Hopefully he is welcome back and feels welcome back as time heals.

“He’s been an important player for the Crows - he should be welcome back”

Graham Cornes says Daniel Talia should feel welcome back at the Adelaide Crows after the former star referred to “issues” with the club at the end of his career.

Talia was a guest speaker at the FIVEaa Golf Day this week, and Cornesy told FIVEaa sports show listeners:
Cannot agree with where Cornes has taken that...Talia was an absolute tower of strength in our backline for years but even he should have recognised he was done and the end was clear. His issue was he wanted to go on and obviously the club knew his body wasn't up to it anymore, IIRC he shopped himself but couldn't find any takers even when he said he was prepared to move interstate for another AFL gig.

Of course only he and the club know what transpired but I think most saw it as Daniel dirty on the club for not allowing him to go on?
Wasn't there talk he did a medical at another club at the time?

Pretty sure Tigers had a look but with that North defender instead.

That fact that no one else picked him up was evidence he was cooked.

Typically you give injured players an extra year perhaps he was thinking we would extend the same courtesy?

His wife didn’t want to move. Port approached him but he knocked them back and said he’d retire rather than play at Alberton.
