That was our payback for Butts on Johnson the week before. Was definitely a free, it would have been fair enough if he was held for only a split second but he was held for a good 2 seconds. You can't stop a player going for the ball. It doesn't matter where the free happened. In saying that Keays did himself no favours throwing his hands back. Just go for the ball and the ump will see you are being held.
Darren Jarman would have tipped it to space, accentuated the hold, shrugged the tackle, picked up the pill, maybe thrown in a baulk or two and then kicked it through and drawn the free kick as well and the Cats fans would have applauded it too. They don't build them like that any more though!

Ugly:
Did anyone else notice this clearance...Classic Alpha vs Beta stuff.
Note starting positions of players, Crows kicking to the left.
Bruhn on Laird at 12, Danger on Dawson at 2 - Danger is a right footer and Blicavs/Duncan? on Rachele at 6.
O'Brien at 6 and Ceglar at 9.

Ceglar with the quick step in. Bruhn and Blicavs block the lightweights. Danger pushes off Dawson.
There is only one winner in this contest unless O'Brien can perform a miracle and some how get it toward the umpire.

Laird picked up what was going on but the bull has already kicked open the gate and charged off forward.

No amount of connection could stop that. Other than O'Brien pushing Ceglar into Dangers path.

Rachelle with the front row seat.

The qn is: how did the Crows expect to win clearance with that setup?
They would do well to look at the tape and map what the Cats did to them.
Because that one was genuinely horrible.

All Geelong players won front position

All Geelong players won front position
it seems a constant issue with all our midfield, stand too far back from the contest and concede front position.
It's exactly the same for ROB at boundary throw in, always standing too far back
You would think it would be obvious and an easy thing to fix but it happens every week

Good pick up. Geelong set up here was pretty clear even with hindsight. The ruck positioning a give away.

If you were going to try and negate their plan instead of go with whatever you have, laird would have come in close to behind the ruck or O'Brien tries to get goal side of their ruck (don't think it's that easy).
I wonder how often our mids decide to break ranks and go against the plan once they see something like this?

Ceglar should never be able to cross that line if the ball is directly above it, it’s obstruction of ROB

10 Esava Ratugolea (GEEL)
5 Max Holmes (GEEL)
4 Mark Blicavs (GEEL)
4 Zach Guthrie (GEEL)
3 Jordan Dawson (ADEL)
2 Lachlan Murphy (ADEL)
1 Jeremy Cameron (GEEL)
1 Mark O'Connor (GEEL)

Lots of disagreement between the coaches other than Ratugolea and Holmes.

Ratugolea (5+5)
Holmes (3+2)
Blicavs (4+0)
Guthrie (4+0)
Dawson (3+0)
Murphy (2+0)
Cameron (1+0)
O'Connor (1+0)

I'm still trying to fathom what the Crows plan was?

Yeah, great analysis.
The blocks to release Danger are beautiful mids-work. Laird and Rachele have got to get in front, or side-on at worst.

Really, really good question for VB, although Laird is experienced enough to know better.

Yep. It's what VB is paid for --- to review, see and fix.

Good question. Both teams' players were on defensive side to start with (only different was Ceglar's position). So if O'Brien manages to get the ball in a different area, things might have looked a lot different.

I think they just executed better and whatever our plan was got nullified by them holding laird and Rachele back. We didn't react fast enough. Better midfield coaching no doubt.

We clearly need to get better here. Hopefully Dawson with more midfield experience can go a long way. He's smart enough.

VB still reviewing the preseason 1 game.

Geelong rucks also set up on the side (instead of front on) this again put Danger in prime position because even if RoB wins the tap - where is the ball going? To Danger again

Though why a free for holding wasnt paid.

Did you all forget that he burned out by mid season last year? They are clearly still managing his loads in the midfield so he can get through a full season without burning out again. It was pretty evident in the Hawks game how gassed he was in the 2nd half.
Yrah it's no biggee a player having a rest when they need it. The problem with Nick's is that he doesn't rest out of form seniors or injured seniors when they require it. Laird might be another that needs a rest as he still looks restricted.

Geelong player not facing the ball and blocking Laird at a centre bounce when all umpires should be looking?

Maybe not across the whole team? :sneaky:
I was thinking about that watching the Cats game.
So many Cats broke tackles; the size difference between us and their older, bigger bodies was clear.
The Crows have a group of undersized young players that often get mauled, physically.

problem is that it's not just the kids' tackles that are routinely broken. We've been a substandard tackling side for over a decade.

VB wouldn't review, he'd just work harder at doing the same thing.

Odd, isn't it, especially when we have one of the Comp's best tacklers in Laird? Who else, Dawson? Sloane when he gets on his bike?
From memory, Berry was a tackling machine too, but that seems to have dropped off.

Tackling is one of the best measures of player intent and pressure. The Crows need to lift :shoutyoldman:. <== when I typed that, I thought to myself ruefully "In so many areas --- goalkicking, general kicking skills, awareness, polish, two-way running etc" :(
