Went alright in the twos. I would have given him the one on one job on King and let Murray be the third man up. RoB would have been able to engage King physically and match him for height.

The game plan didn't match selection. We went in short, then allowed them far too much leeway with Hill bouncing off their half back line.
King is too agile and too much the leaper for ROB to handle .....King is a smart player, ROB isn't

So who was playing on Hill ?

Good
McHenry (and Strachan) coming in to fly the flag after Murphy copped that high cheap shot

Bad
Murphy's following set shot from the 50m penalty. His field kicking is abysmal, his goal kicking is worse (wasn't alone tonight but his is always terrible). Stoppage mid or nothing.
Murph and McHenry being played as small forwards is just excruciating. How many shots on goal will they miss before the coaches finally give up on this dumb experiment?

Both show a bit further up the field. McHenry is quite elusive, good with his hands. Can hit a short pass. Murphy reads things well off hands at stoppages.

Both have no value close to goal.

The Tex stat (40% of our scores involve him, an AFL high) show that we need to get more goal threats/creative players in our forward half.

Tex has really fallen off a cliff lately. Looked a star in his first few games but now struggles to do anything right.
Was one of a few of our mature players who showed a real lack of composure at stages of the game .....the "moment" still affects Tex .....rush's kicks, or chooses the wrong options .....it's always a Benjamin Franklin analysis with Tex's games

Not just a ruck, but one who has some athleticism and a good vertical leap. Stop with the big, lumbering dudes.

I think Rowe will be OK as a small, he's smart and generally fines a target by foot inside 50 if he gets it.
Agree but a couple times..again. he had a he chance to snap a goal but failed and his kick went nowhere far...needs to improve there ..

I reckon it was both

We could have not just won , but won by 6 goals if we’d not miss kicks going forward as well as goals . Even some of our skilled players end up making errors by foot when it spreads
As Scorpus said above though, we still took 10 marks inside 50, hit up forwards well just outside 50 and generated 24 scoring shots from 47 entries. There will always be skill errors in a game, it’s just unfortunate our skill errors were in front of goal and it cost us dearly. There is no need to complicate the analysis beyond that really, we couldn’t hit the side of a barn and the Saints couldn’t miss.

Strauchan obviously has things to learn .....however he is far superior to ROB

Is it any coincidence, our midfielders have had more clearances since Strauchans's inclusion ? .....or it simply the exclusion of Crouch & inclusion of Hately that has been the difference

When firing ROB would be better than Strauchan .....however those have been so few as to render Strauchan far more consistent, even with just 5 games under his belt ....and in comparing the two, experience or inexperience has to be factored in
Rubbish.

ROB's been down on form but ROB's best is levels above Strachan.

Laird is no better..

One that stands out from last night was his, under little pressure, 20m field kick to a leading Rachele.. that basically landed on Rachele’s toes making it near impossible for him at full flight to pick up..

Which also prompted a comment on the game day thread of “geez Rachele needs a break”!!…

Yep.. It was Rachele’s fault… had nothing to do with yet another garbage kick by Rory.
If Laird gets in the best players again..flip me dead... Appalling kicking skills..Silogo was our best onballer along with Berry and both not getting near enough love...appalling

If we are trading FOG lets get rid of Thilthorpe, he has to have the least amount of presence for a 200cm forward ever. Did he take a contest mark all night, the answer is NO!!!

What an ironic statement coming from someone with Sellar as their user name.....

Watching the golf too mate :)

I'm not Fogs biggest fan but the hate is over the top here. His first quarter was very good pushing up the ground. Spent long periods on the bench and the delivery into F50 was diabolical. He was definitely not our worst.

I wonder, whe we picked RT over LM in the draft, whether we thought we were getting a strong marking forward, a ruckman/forward or a strong running forward who could run his opponent around? Because right now, LM looks the more natural forward by a mile.
We should have gone Logan McDonald. You gotta feel for North who went for Phillips (who has been unsighted this year) over McDonald. That was stupidity.

I don't agree with the criticism of our coaching and structure.

We were all over St Kilda in the first half especially, we had more inside 50s, more scoring shots and broke even or won the main midfield stats.

What more can the coach do than get us into a position where we have more inside 50s and more shots at goal?

We lost because we kicked 15 behinds. Half of those we absolutely should have kicked. We do that and we win.
Most here can't see that...along with Keats and Laird having poor kicking skills ..Murray is a baby .did ok ...Silogo was almost best for us.. Berry's best game...was sooo wrong about Hately who could be a useful player..he used his body well this time...Thilthorpe showed signs... McAdam our most accurate... Walkers kicking a huge factor...McHenry was very good except his shot on goal..didn't do the usual stupid things, Brown is very meh for ages now..Hamil's dash was good.. Why all the over negativity.. high draft picks s coming

We have plenty of issues, but the main glaring one is our midfield size

Laird. Good player
Sloane (was) a good player
Berry (going) to be a good player
Soligo (showing signs) of being a good player
Crouch (was) a good player
Keays. Good player

But they are all the same height and all don't have pace.

Where is our Petracca, Oliver, Bont, Fyfe, Cripps, Kennedy (back in his day) Danger, Macrae type?

We need someone with size and or pace that can grab the game by the scruff and drag us over the line. We got smashed in the middle in the last.Small bodies were tired

We have some pieces of elite talent. Dawson, Rachele, Thilthorpe. But none of them are mids (Rachele may become one?)

I don't mid finishing bottom 5 again if it means we get a top 5 pick to get more top end talent. But gee whiskers we CANNOT afford to * this one up

* going for Lukocious or Rankine. They don't fit our top end need. Get the speed and size we need to tear some games apart. Until we do that, we going to languish bottom 5-6 every year

ROB clearly is, just severely down on form.
He's s**t. Tapping it to oppo midfielders and dead weight around the ground.

Strachan actually puts in around the ground, but too lightly framed to win in the ruck.

We basically have no rucks. It should be our recruiters first priority.

Agree this week

We just don’t have enough skill and class and we all know it but it’s still frustrating
We do, in small - med players .....just not all on the park ATM .....where we lack class, is in the talls dept ...that's a real need

After watching the first half again last night there were a few weak efforts that caught my eye The worst one which was commented on by our ex captain Roo was a pass from Keays in the backline to Smith. Smith stood there not going at the ball inviting the North player to mark the ball right in front of him. It was Mason Wood. He did get a lot of the ball last night but his penetsting kicking has fallen away and efforts like that are unacceptable.

We're screwed either way. Neither of them are AFL standard rucks.

The only thing we missed about RoB last night was his a ility to drop back in defence. I would have played both last night, and played RoB in the David Pittmam role.
Sounds good in theory but his defence work this year has been below expectations. I’m not sure he has it in him to compete with king as an actual accountable defender.
