Good Friday

I feel that ANZAC day has become the most sacred of days on the Australian calender, we play footy on that day.
But we cant play on Good Friday?

AFL is really missing out on alot of extra $$$

No one other than Victorians watches the Good Friday appeal. It certainly isn't broadcast in Sydney. Seem stupid not to have a blockbuster AFL game scheduled on the day/night when other codes play games.

I think the religious arguments died out long ago, but the Good Friday Appeal has always been a big event and part of Melbourne. As Channel 7 have been both the traditional broadcaster of the appeal and footy I'd say this is the main historical reason.

Play a twilight game or games in other states.

No reason the AFL could not schedule a game or two in other states and still get the Vic TV audience who would flick between the appeal and the footy.

The thugby spuds have jumped into Good Friday in typical mercenary fashion. Won't be going to that rubbish and their team of salary cap cheating spuds.

I will never put a cent into the NRL competition and its media supporters and fans who do everything in their power to put down our great Australian game.

It is UnVictorian to watch NRL on our sacred day.

EXPLAIN HOW

Presently Australians are gifted a public holiday to commemorate an event in a particular (in this case, Christian) tradition. Accordingly, that tradition ought be respected.
I'd have to say I rarely give a crap as to why I got a day off be it Easter, Queens B'day, Anzac whatever...its just a freaking holiday

I havent watched it for over 20 years and was unaware they still had it on TV

Good Friday has absolutely no significance to me. I'm not particularly bothered by the whole 'no footy on friday' thing because we get a game one day earlier, but on principle I say play on Good Friday!

But everyone will be at work, on this day of 'no significance'.

for a long time, there was no football on ANZAC day too, until the AFL made the game a big part of commemorating the event...with diggers, the last post, the minute's silence.

So the game referred directly to the occasion.

Will they do do similar 'religious' commemorations on Good Friday? I doubt it; the secular masses will consider it a breach of their secular rights.

Yet..there is a holiday...so what to do?

For mine, I tend to agree with SonOfReep. People who want the holiday, butdon't want any religion to intrude on their 'holiday' (Holy Day being the origin of the word) are being disingenuous.

The only way people can be consistent is:-

Those who don't believe there should be a Good Friday holiday at all in a secular state. (I have some respect for this position)

Those who believe it is a sacred day, without football (I have some respect for this position too)

Those who want football on that day, and are willing to accept some religious reference at the game, like Anzac Day.

Of course, the fly in the ointment, is the Queens Birthday weekend, which doesn't have any connection between the game and the day...so there's my thesis knackered...

I thought being Christain or Catholic or whatever was all about helping people in need.

And if they cant see that a Good friday game can raise money for the Children Hosiptal by selling jumpers and getting donations at the game (as posted previously) then they are deluded.

Im sure the Pope wouldnt care if we had a game that goes for 2 hours on good friday but raised $100,000 for sick kids.

Im sure if you had a sick kid in the Royal you be all for it.

P.S Wondering if posters would still go to the game if they sold no meat and beer at the game??

The Storm game isnt on TV live so its not a big deal for the AFL.

Appeal clash delays TV coverage of big match

.A News Ltd request that the Storm's top-of-the-table Good Friday clash with St George Illawarra in Melbourne does not compete with a charity fund-raising event it sponsors has denied fans live television coverage.

The match, which was intended to be the opening event at AAMI Park before being shifted to Etihad Stadium due to delays in completing the Storm's new home ground, is the first major sporting event to be played in Melbourne on Good Friday since the club hosted the now-defunct Northern Eagles in 2001.

Channel Nine, a regular source of anger for NRL fans in Melbourne due to its reluctance to broadcast matches in a reasonable timeslot, had wanted to show Friday's game live at 4pm in NSW, Queensland and Victoria until the kick-off was brought forward to 2pm because of concerns it would conflict with the annual Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Despite the time change, Channel Nine will still televise the match in NSW at 4pm as planned.

But fans in Victoria will have to wait until 11pm LOL:D

No it's an outdated means of controlling the masses through fear of god.

Read Leviticus and you'll see how far civilisation has come in a few millenium.

Leviticus is a bloody good read. I was at the doctors office with my girlfriend and there was a bible hidden amongst the stack of dated magazines, so I read it aloud for the lulz.

Love the bit where women arent supposed to touch any fresh food during their period as it will spoil and go rotten.

As a Christian im all for playing football on Easter Friday. Easter Friday is a big day for people who believe but i dont believe people who dont should be affected and forced into not being able to watch footy or go about their lives.
Look it doesnt take 24 hours to be thankful, bring on Friday night footbal on Easter.

I do agree with a lot of what you say, although to correct you on that, footy on ANZAC day has been around for a very long time. Only in the last 15 years have Collingwood and Essendon took control of it..

Did they play every ANZAC day like they do now, even midweek, or was it a case of there were games if ANZAC day happened to be a Saturday?

Aaah, cheers, I must have got my wires crossed somewhere...

I really couldn't care less who gets the day.

I'm for a GF rematch in round 1 to kick off the season, so in 2-3 years when "Churchy Vlad" gets the boot, play West Sydney vs the Gold Coast on Good Friday for all I care.

All I know is every sports loving Australian who is not offended by sport on good friday will be watching an NRL game this Friday, HELLO AFL, are you listening.

I live for sport, but I wont be watching the rugby. Hate that game. Would rather play backyard cricket and have some beers

Since the early 1960s before that it was the same as good friday.

I personally am happy with no game on Good Friday. We get plenty footy all season and surely there is nothing wrong with one day off. I can't see it happening in the near future and am happy to live with that.

But why are you happy with it? Because its 'one day off', or because you are Christian and it suits your personal beliefs?

I can't believe we are even discussing this

2000 years ago a guy (Paul) who never met Jesus weaved a very common pagan myth of the dying and resurrected man god born of a virgin on 25th Dec around him that Jesus's own family were aghast with because it portrayed him as a god instead of the ordinary man they knew and here we are still walking on egg shells ffs
Wasnt born in December ;)

who gives a hoot what the Pope thinks, we are a secular society. that means he is no more relevant than Heather Mills McCartney to how we conduct our society.
