I think Hodge is a very good player BUT I think he will never be in the same league as Judd or Ball. Another waste of #1 pick. Not a toal waste because Hodge is a good player but I am sureif you ask Hawks now whether they would take Judd or Ball insted of Hodge they would jump at the idea with both hands.
As it stands ATM you could say that, but too pre-mature to judge, particularly given Hodges run with injury.
You only need one stella season to turn everyones opinions around.

Seriously, stop saying that, it's beginning to wear thin and reek of rose-coloured glasses.

As you have admitted grudgingly before, it is only a hope, so stop pencilling him in all your posts like he is a cert FF option. He has NEVER shown any of that sort of form, he is an unknown quantity and didn't do much in his time in the SANFL.

And do I assume that we do not need high draft picks to replace the Macleods, Roo and our future "franchise" players. We'll just get them in the second or third round, due to the fantastic recruiting skills of our recruiting dept.

The objective is to reduce your risk of draft failures, not increase it, as you are suggesting.
To suggest we do not need high draft picks to re-stock our list is ...well I don't follow the argument.
Look mate I understand where you are coming from but you don't trade McGregor unless you are getting a KPP of better value.

Of course we need players to replace the likes of McLeod, Ricciuto etc down te track but you don't sell your only certain KPP for a pick that might get you that.

The skills of our recruiting department are far from fantastic especially early in the draft. So really if we are to go for early round draft pick the chances are that we will screw up those picks. Our drafting record hasn't been fantastic but our drafting in 1st round has been absolutely shocking :(

We need high draft picks BUT why the hell would you trade your best KPP who has played 80 AFL games, is still only 23 and is one of the best CHBs in the comp who is capable of playing good footy in all 4 key positions?????? It doesn't make sense especially since quality KPPs is the area that we are lacking in.

Just on St. Kilda not all of their guns are top 10 picks. Dal Santo and Maguire have been taken at #13 and #21 respectively. Yes they got the likes of Riewoldt, Kosi, Ball, Clarke bros, Hayes etc are top 10 picks.

Surely McGregor is probably your only "untouchable" player.

You could cover for Ricciuto or McLeod far easier than you could for McGregor atm.

McGregor would be almost impossible to replace in the short term.

Freo absolutely raped Hawks on that trade. They got McPharlin and Croad for #1 pick. Freo got a gun that they really wanted in McPharlin and got a marketing tool in Croad. A couple of years later they trade Croad back to Hawks for a pick that lands them a gun in the making in Dunn.

Freo's trading and drafting since Schwab became CEO is exceptional.
Hawthorn got three picks from that trade actually.

With them they took Hodge, Elstone and Mitchell.

IMO the Hawks won that trade but didn't make the best of their first two picks.

Think we can safely say we have flogged the horse on this topic.
I'll just bookmark this subject and raise it again at an appropriate time.;)
