Good luck Jarryd Lyons

It was the right decision for him and for us given that we weren't going to use him. Would have been wasting everyone's time by staying.

What was annoying was our reluctance to play him previous to that and our aversion to playing him in the centre square.

Didn't know what we had.

And yet many of us did.

There’s no doubt we are rusted on to particular names in our midfield and if you aren’t one of the gang you might as well leave.

That gang has been proven time and again to not be up to it. Right now if you asked me to choose between Lyons and Sloane I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the former.

We have an entirely inflated view of our midfield which has no basis in reality

We also don't run enough players through there. Our selected 22 provides next to zero flexibility and/or midfield support. It's basically a throwback to the old set position days. Modern football is won with running power and full field pressure, we carry too many players at either end that can't help us win a scrap in open play. You need to have players swarming at contests, we have no opportunity to do that.

To say he’s similar to CEY is ridiculous.

All one-paced midfielders are not created equal. Yes, Lyons isn’t quick, but his hand and foot skills s**t all over most of our team.

He's also the only one, apart from Brad, that can collect the ball in motion and exit the pressure area on foot heading at our goal. The importance of 6-6-6 is grossly overstated by the average punter. But the one area that it rewards and/or punishes is the ability to exit a stoppage on foot, heading towards goal and having cleared the pressure area. Obviously, we weren't to know of that rule change, but even prior to that, you can see how valuable going forward from a stoppage and delivering without pressure is. We had certainly conceded enough of these for our coaches to have clued into it.

And yet many of us did.
There does seem to be a real culture of coaches at our club having players that are personal favourites and, at the other end of the spectrum, players that they just don't rate. And these leanings override all else, including performance.

We talk about speed of ball movement only when it's some old plodder we want to keep in the team

Met Jarryd's dad at the local bowlo today during a tournament. Was told as a matter of fact that he was offered no more than $160,000 the year he left, which would have made him the lowest paid player (senior list) at the Crows including new draftees apparently. Loved it in Adelaide as was reported at the time and was gobsmacked by how little we valued him when it came down to it.

Makes you wonder what Thompson was being paid in his last year

Must have been asked to take a paycut

Its the Adelaide FC way. We picked up Polholke in the draft with his pick. I wonder who won.

Not sure how that math works. There would be a bunch of players on $160k or less.

The average player wage in 2016 was $309k.

So, for every player on $450k, there was one player getting what was offered to Jarryd. For every player at $600k there's two, and for every player at $750k there's three.

Admittedly, it's right at the bottom end, but surely there's need to be quite a few of them, because we had some well paid footballers.

I don't doubt Lyons was offered * all

But draftees wages are in the CBA and are less than $160k so that part isn't true

Pleased he's found a home and is now able to play regular quality football

He was just at the wrong club. The people who mattered here didn't rate him. Fortunately a large slice of those have now been fired in disgrace

Would be a close thing if the draftee played as many games as Lyons did in 2016. First round draftee about $90k base and $3.5k per AFL game. He’s basically be on EBA base plus games if he notched 20 games again.

Basically.

Obviously I'm a huge Lyons fan, and have been for years.

Our treatment of him, and giving him away, was a joke.

Those responsible are now largely gone, so, while it still pisses me off, I'm mainly just glad to see him performing so well at Brisbane, and proving what a quality player he is (especially considering he's largely acknowledged to be a fantastic guy).

Massive blunder by us, add it to the list, but good on the lad/.
