NEW AFL RULE: Players with the last name Fyfe must now play for expansion teams Thank You for your cooperation.

Seems to me the sub-editor's choice of title doesn't actually reflect what the 'rule' is about.

Also seems the moron who wrote the article has overstretched to try point the finger at Freo when in the preceding paragraph they clearly state 'managing player fatigue' is allowed.

I would have thought it should be called the "Freo Exemption" specifically allows us to do it .

It could all be avoided by scheduling a bye last round - then no problems.

PERTH, Australia -- A bout of mystery flu has swept through the Fremantle Dockers camp ahead of their dead rubber against their Round 23 regular season opponents.

After the entire group trained strongly on Wednesday, it is believed many key players caught the 48-hour bug overnight.

Nat Fyfe, David Mundy, Michael Walters, Michael Barlow, Chris Mayne, Hayden Ballantyne, Stephen Hill, Michael Johnson, Lee Spurr, Ryan Crowley, Zac Dawson, Matthew Pavlich and Aaron Sandilands have all but confirmed to have the bug and will miss, with a host of other players also rumoured to have mild but developing symptoms.

"It's not ideal, but our sick players will rest at home and watch some tape ahead of our first Final against whoever ends up in 4th" said Ross Lyon when asked at his press conference.

"We'll make sure the AFL gets those doctors certificates on Monday."

One thing I dont understand it says

In layman's terms, it means that clubs can base their team selection and match-day coaching around injuries and player welfare, as well as the need to look at their depth and younger players with a view to the future.

So if we always say we are testing for the future by 2-3 changes second last round and 8 in last then it is a trend to test for future not a one off.
I hear the AFL likes those.

Guys looking at the rules as they have written them they aren't after just Fremantle their after GWS , Gold Coast St Kilda and Melbourne as well .
In the 2 years GWS has been in the AFL they have player every player on their list and other than Cameron no one other than a couple of the olds got many games .
Their young guns have played very few games ,making sure they stayed on the bottom of the ladder for more first round draft picks .
Gold coast did the same thing but the older players were of better quality so they at least went up the ladder only a couple of positions thereby still able to get some high draft picks .
Melbourne and St Kilda did the same thing blooding a lot of under developed young kids ,Melbourne where trying the AFL bosses patients but so no priority pick for them but still they get some good draft picks as well .
When it comes down to it we gained some rest for sore and bruised players and got to see what other players on our list could do '
I remember Hawthorn resting about 8 senior players a couple of years back for a game in Tassie against a lesser team and they won the game , our only problem was that we lost BUGGER iT

I'm... starting to lose interest in the AFL to some extent.
Still be watching next year, no doubt, but seriously, the manipulation of the game to maximise attendances and revenue is getting beyond a joke.
Some of it doesn't even appear to be that - it's simply about control for the sake of control.

The AFL commision are a bunch of c---ts.

One other thing, if the players have to do drug tests so should the admin. I wonder how many crack parties do these clowns go to while coming up with these rules.

Bollocks, GWS and Gold Coast have been resting young players for three seasons now. Freo just did it to be in with a shot of a GF and they decide to change the rules now.

The reality is, it is a Law that needed to be written.

It was not aimed at Fremantle and it has only been suggested it was by an idiot.

There have been allegations and aspersions thrown at various clubs for what appeared to be contrived results.
The rule is now formalised and should have been done years ago.

Resting players before finals campaigns is not against the spirit of this law, particularly interstate teams who have to travel.
Indeed the rule explicitly endorses resting of fatigued players.

Journalism at its best!

Your quite brilliant Ashley.

Did you actually read the rule or was it your sub-editor's fault.

Your punishment: Interview one on one with Ross Lyon... in a cistern.
I imagine Ross would require the cistern to be located somewhere outside New Dehli's deep sewerage.

The rule is fine. The AFL commission are not idiots. And it would in no way affect what Freo did. The problem is Ashley Browne wanted it to be about Freo. He wanted so much to find something in the rules about what Freo did because he doesn't think we should be able to level up the playing field by not taking players on two 4 hour flights for a pointless game . So he interpreted it in such a way so he could write his ill conceived tripe to make the rule about something it isn't.

I would call the guy a goose, but then I'd have to apologise to all the geese for vilifying them.

Don't worry about the geese apology the bloke's an accidental knob ie has no idea that he's thick as 60 goats(apologies to the goats).
Reassuring to know that he's lecturing in journalism to a new bunch who hopefully see him for the drongo he is.

There's a real issue with AFL journalism where honest representation and analysis of the facts has gone out the window in favour of twisting stories to fit a preconceived agenda.

We saw a perfect example with the Crowley/Stevie J incident where they went as far as doctoring the footage to play up the 'nasty tagger' narrative. It's disgraceful.

It makes AFL journos look like fools to more knowledgeable fans, but the problem is the great majority of part-time fans swallow it hook, line and sinker.

This takes the cake for one of the most pathetic headlines/articles I have read. Which is saying something considering the website that is afl.com.au. It is beyond belief that this article could be published when it is 100% clear that what we did is not against this new rule.

It is actually a good rule. I have no problem with the AFL on this one. The journalist reporting on it should be sacked for lack of comprehension skills.

Doesn't look like they really thought this through properly before releasing it. It doesn't technically summarise what we did. Maybe if we were a risk of falling a spot (to 4th) it'd apply but we weren't. And we WERE managing our players - as listed as exceptions to the rule.

Yep what dumbasses, the reality is this rule has nothing to do with FFC.
