Collingwood's 2014 campaign ended in a tight, torrent affair with the Sydney Swans at the SCG in the 2nd Semi Final.

The pies were in the contest all night, taking it right up to the eventual premiers until Kurt Tippett kicked two goals in the final 3 minutes to drown out the Collingwood charge. It was seen as a good developmental year for the Magpies as they were able to introduce some handy new recruits and rookies into the system while still having Nathan Freeman and Matthew Scharenberg up their sleeve for the coming season.

Luke Ball and Ben Hudson both announced their retirements fro senior football. The Pies were pleased to announce that Nick Maxwell would play on for the 2015 season. The Pies delisted Tony Armstrong, Caolon Mooney, Corey Gault and Martin Clarke.

2014 AFL DRAFT:

Collingwood has taken key position utility Wesley Bowker with pick #4 who is expected to potentially slot straight into the teams best 22.

Collingwood's second round selection netted another KPP in Julius Daye from Adelaide.

Their third and final pick saw another half back join the list in Martin Ross from Victoria.

CBF with the rookie/pre-season drafts so Collingwood just recruited a few bums.

MAGPIE FORWARDS GUIDE COLLINGWOOD TO VICTORY OVER GRITTY SAINTS.

St.Kilda: 3.1 – 5.2 – 8.3 – 11.3. 69
Collingwood: 5.2 – 8.3 – 11.4 – 16.5. 101

The biggest concern for St.Kilda in this match was going to be St.Kilda's ability to handle Collingwood's three big forwards.

The Saints showed a thirst for the contest in the midfield but the Pies always looked far too strong going forward. Cloke and White both had goals early in the first quarter and the signs looked ominous for the undersized Saint defenders. Cloke finished with 5, White 4 and Reid added 2 before being moved onto Nick Riewoldt midway through the third quarter.

The Magpies oozed class in the midfield through Pendlebury and Beams and threatened to blow out the game in both the second and third quarters as they kicked out in both quarters to four goals leads but the Saints continued to peg the lead back. Taylor Adams put in his best game for the club in the middle, winning the hard ball as he stepped inside Luke Ball's shoes, while adding two goals of his own to the score board.

Dane Swan went head to head with former premiership Pie, Steele Sidebottom, got plenty of the ball and kicked an important goal during the third quarter while Nathan Brown was rock solid in defence and Clinton Young did nothing. Zac Clarke was might impressive in the ruck and Matt Scharenberg provided plenty of support in defence on debut.

St.Kilda veteran, Lenny Hayes, was stirring in the middle and booted two goals while captain Nick Riewoldt ran all day.

Cloke 5. White 4. Reid, Adams 2. Goldsack, Elliot, Swan 1.

VOTES:

PIES HOLD OFF DETERMINED BOMBERS IN MCG THRILLER

Collingwood: 1.3 – 6.4 – 10.7 – 12.9. 81
Essendon: 5.2 – 6.3 – 10.4 – 11.5. 71

Collingwood has held off a determined Essendon at the MCG.

The Pies were forced to work hard all game after the Bombers blitzed the fancied Pies in the first term. Essendon lead by as much as 25 points in the second quarter before the big Pie forwards switched into gear to narrow the margin before half time. Jack Frost drilled a sizzling running goal from outside 50 to steer the Pies ahead at the main break but the Bombers were hardly done there.

Essendon won many of the key stats in this game but clearly didn't have the midfield class that the Pies did. Dayne Beams was huge in the third quarter, kicking a goal and setting about 3 others for White, Cloke and Blair that saw Collingwood out to a fifteen point lead five minutes before 3/4 time but goals to Joe Daniher and David Zaharakis had the Bombers back within a kick at 3/4 time.

Collingwood recruit, Zac Clarke, was subbed off at 3/4 time and the Pies looked thin in the ruck, relying on White and Cloke. The Bombers kicked ahead early through Chapman but the Magpies were able to rally through Cloke (3 goals) and a brilliant running goal from Jarryd Blair (2 goals) iced a fantastic game of football at the MCG.

Jack Frost was fantastic at centre half back for the Pies. He held Hurley to one goal and drilled one of his own while Beams and Pendlebury were again amongst the best. The Pies fans were thrilled that Clinton Young finally had a meaningful impact and the Pies big forwards were a handful. Joe Daniher booted three goals for the Bombers, and could have put them within 5 points with a minute to go if he hadn't narrowly hit the post, and Zaharakis was their best through the middle.

Hawks ruin the Pies party in MCG thriller.

Hawthorn: 2.3 – 5.3 – 8.6 – 9.7. 61
Collingwood: 4.2 – 5.4 – 8.5 – 8.9. 57

Three miss shots at goal in the final two minutes have cost Collingwood greatly against grand finalist, Hawthorn.

Ben Reid had two chances to put Collingwood ahead in the dying moments. He sprayed a soda (get it?) from twenty metres out after receiving a free kick for a push in the back and another from forty-five metres out after a beautiful lead and mark. Jarryd Blair also had the chance to put the Pies ahead in the dying minutes.

The Pies kicked the first three goals of this game with Reid booting two and Swan the other. The Hawks, however, were steady from that point on and kicked themselves into the lead just before half time before the Pies were able to take the lead back. Roughead kicked two goals in the second term, along with Rioli chipping in two opportunist goals, it was always a fairly low scoring game.

Cyril Rioli added two more in the third term and the margin blew out to a nineteen point lead before Cloke (who had been struggling with accuracy) and Elliot got on the scoreboard. Scott Pendlebury was dominant in the midfield again, along with Dane Swan, and the two gun midfielders set up most of Collingwood's goals but it wasn't enough to topple a Hawthorn side that has had their number for the past three seasons.

Rioli was the match winner for the Hawks in the forward line. Matt Scharenberg held Jordan Lewis goalless while the dangerous Hawk mid spent most of game in the forward line. The loss was even harder to swallow for the pies as Josh Thomas, Jaryd Blair and Clinton Young all found themselves injured late in the game. In the end, The Pies just didn't have enough players kicking goals and inaccuracy hurt them greatly.

'Sharon' receives rising star nomination

Young Magpie defender, Matthew Scharenberg, is this rounds NAB rising star nominee.

The highly touted pick number six has overcome injuries in his feet to play an important role in the first three games this season. He held Jordan Lewis goalless and to virtually no impact in Collingwood's 57-61 loss to Hawthorn on round 3.

PIES KICK CLEAR OF ARCH RIVAL IN SPIRITED, YET FORGETTABLE, CONTEST.

Collingwood: 2.1 – 3.4 – 8.5 – 12.8. 80
Carlton: 4.1 – 4.2 – 6.3 – 7.5. 47

Collingwood has improved it's record to 3 and 1 with a 33 point win over arch rival Carlton at the MCG.

The Pies kicked clearly early but Andrew Walker was absolutely dominant in the first team. After the Pies kicked the first two goals, the Blues swing man kicked the next four on his own. He left Nathan Brown, Nick Maxwell and Tom Langdon all struggling to contain him. The Blues forward added one more goal when Nathan Brown returned to him after quarter time.

Collingwood's goals mainly came from their forward line. Tyson Goldsack had 2 leading into half time and Jamie Elliot lifted in the second half to boot three and become the match winner. Jesse White was handy with two goals while playing the back up role and Ben Reid was best on ground with two goals and alot of the ball over the field. Travis Cloke was well held but kicked an important goal from the goal square nearing the end of the third term.

The midfield was even for the majority of the match but Dayne Beams, Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan all broke free in the final quarter to lead the Pies to an important victory after dropping the game the week before. Carlton didn't offer alot in terms of goal kick spread, with Walking kicking five and Garlett the other two, their midfields just didn't hurt the Pies like they could have when they had momentum.

Zac Clarke was dominant in the ruck and kicked a stirring third quarter goal. Jack Frost destroyed Jarrad Waite and Brent Macaffer held Marc Murphy to the point he barely affected the game. Martin Ross came on as the sub in the final term and was sent directly to Chris Judd and won some important midfield battles. Martin was the Pies third draft selection last year and has impressed with VFL form leading into debut.

PIES STAGE HUGE COMEBACK TO SHATTER THE BULLDOGS.

W.Bulldogs: 4.1 – 10.4 – 11.4 – 12.5. 77
Collingwood: 1.4 – 6.4 – 13.7 – 14.10. 94

The Bulldogs have been viewed as the big improver this season and for a quarter and a half look like a side ready to challenge for a flag.

The Doggies led this match by 41 points mid-way through the second quarter. They were running harder, their forward line was dominating and they were nailing goals that they probably will never nail again. The Doggies put forward a glimpse of their future but were unable to respond when the Magpies finally switched into gear and hit back at them with eight minutes to go in the second.

Dayne Beams took control in the middle and the football just started to hit Pie forwards on the best. The 41 point lead that the Dogs had was cut down to 23 points before Ryan Griffin received a free kick. He missed the goal after the siren and the Pies came back out after half time still with the momentum. Dayne Beams continued to dominate the match and the Pies clawed their way to the lead with ten minutes remaining in the third.

The Dogs attempted to rally, Dahlhaus kicked a opportunity goal to give them the lead back, but the Pies were able to put themselves 15 points ahead at the 3/4 time break and proceeded to stranglehold the tired puppies for the entire final quarter. The Pies held on for a memorable 17 point win and moved to 4-1 and for the reason.

Travis Cloke kicked 4. Ben Kennedy kicked 2 important goals in his best performance for the Magpies and Dayne Beams was sublime in the middle with 2 of his own. Nathan Brown again allowed early goals through when Crameri had four goals to half time and his spot in the side is beginning to look a little shaky with #4 pick Bowker knocking on the door.

POWER OUTAGE! PIES TOO STRONG FOR INJURY RIDDLED POWER.

Collingwood: 3.0 – 9.3 – 12.4 – 13.6. 84
Port Adelaide: 1.1 – 3.1 – 4.3 – 7.5. 47

Port Adelaide came into this season as one of the premiership favourites and have now slumped to 3-3 and sit in 14th place on the ladder. A road trip to Melbourne to play Collingwood was always going to be a rough task for the injury hit Power. They were missing Travis Boak, Justin Westoff, Angus Monfries, Brad Ebert, Ollie Wines and Matthew Lobbe all through injuries and suspensions. The Pies were also coming into this game in top form.

The Power fought this match out well but Collingwood's engine room was far too strong in the middle with Port missing three of their best midfielders. Robbie Gray stood up as the teams captain but the Magpie forwards feasted on the delivery with Reid booting 4 and Cloke booting 3. Ben Kennedy could be close to cementing his spot in the side after bobbing up with two goals.

At the start of the years, this would have been billed as a blockbuster game, but the Power look toast for 2015 with long term crippling injuries and the Pies went through the motions to win by 37 points, move to 5-1 and 2nd on the AFL ladder.

PIES CRAWL HOME IN WET MCG SLOG.

Collingwood: 1.4 – 3.7 – 5.11 - 6.15. 51
Brisbane: 1.0 – 3.2 – 3.3 - 7.3. 45

Collingwood has survived a final quarter surge from a improving Brisbane Lions in heavy rain at the MCG. The weather was that bad at the G that the entire first level was virtually deserted after half time.

The Magpies drew first blood through Jesse White midway through the first term with a quick snap from the ruck and the Lions responded through former magpie, Jackson Paine. It was a game where Collingwood's big three in the middle really struggled to get on top on their gritty Lions opponents.

Tom Langdon was brilliant off half back for the Magpies as Brisbane held accendency in the middle through alot of the game. Josh Thomas played his best game as a Magpie despite missing three chances at goal through the match. Johnathan Brown was the only multiple goal kicker on the field as the Pies shared the spoils with all single goal kickers.

Brisbane only had six scoring shots going into the final term but managed to kick four straight goals in the final term. They reduced the margin to 8 points midway through the final before Taylor Adams steadied and goaled to effectively seal the game. The Lions kicked two more, with one after the siren bringing the margin back to six points.

PREMIERS COME UP WITH THE 'GOODES' TO STRANGLE PIES

Sydney: 5.0 – 5.2 – 12.4 – 14.4. 88
Collingwood: 5.0 – 6.2 – 7.5 – 9.8. 62

The Swans have been a major disappointment this season but still upset the second placed Magpies at the SCG.

The Pies have been talked about as premiership favorites but the Swans were back to their gritty, hard-working best to spoil their party with a massive third quarter that saw them pile on seven goals to one. The Pies simply had no answer for the Swans forwards, who exposed the Pies lack of height down back with Tippet, Franklin and Goodes all hitting the scoreboard.

Despite their position the ladder, the Magpies have looked vulnerable in alot of games this season. The midfield that normally kicks goals isn't at this stage and are leaving it all up to the big forwards, Cloke and Reid. The Swans had midfielders hitting the scoreboard most of the day, dominated when it mattered in the middle and held off the Magpie fight back early in the final term.

Pendlebury was dynamic in the middle. However, his fellow midfielders didn't come to the party and Dane Swan even found himself red vested at three-quarter time. The Magpies take on a winless Richmond next week and need to rebound.
