The Reds got up again today, against an opposition that probably gave us the best run for our money so far, and yet we still pummelled them by a whopping margin.

I think the final score was :
Fitzroy Reds 17.20.122
St Johns 6.8.44

St Johns had settled as 3rd best team so far this year, so we were expecting a good show, and we got one.

Up 2 goals to 1 in the first quarter, and kicking to the hoodoo end in the second, we were unsettled a little when St Johns booted the first couple of goals. Well, us fans in the peanut gallery might have been unsettled, but the Reds didn't seem to fuss, banging on 8 unanswered majors for the remainder of the term.

In fact the east end was where our two big quarters came from, unusual seeing that we usually do better in the other direction.

St Johns continued to play great footy, strong marking, and one spectacular Doc Wheildon goal in the last quarter. But, as suspected, the quality of opposition simply set the wheels in motion for the Reds to up their workrate, and we still got away for a 78 point win.

The second quarter, in which we kicked 8 goals to 2, basically deflated the other team, though they still fought hard for everything afterward.

The noise from the decent-sized crowd was a welcome delight, and the number of old Roys scarves around the ground continues to grow.

The reserves also got up, I think it was 14 goals to 5 or something like that, so both seniors and F Troop have now played every other team, and remain on top of their respective ladders, undefeated.

When promoted in the Ammos, can a team skip a division?

For those who didn't hear the suspect attempt at crooning on the hill in the last quarter, or at least couldn't make out the lyrics, this is what I blurted, to the tune of Goodnight Irene :

Sometimes we win by a little.
Sometimes we win by a lot.
Sometimes we're faced with a challenge.
But a challenge is something you're not.

St Johns, goodnight.
St Johns, goodnight.
Goodnight St Johns, goodnight St Johns.
You'll beat us in our dreams.

I have not yet begun to embarass myself ...

:p

Next week is Richmond Centrals, at Brunny Street.

Thursday night coming is the natter and noggin night, or whatever they call it now, at the Lord Newry Hotel. I'll find more info about it and chuck a bit of a plug in. Maybe someone from the club reading this can do it for me?

... and I'm spent.

If you take Old Essendon Grammer as an example, I believe that things could look great for the Reds. I can't remember if the year was 95 or 96, but back then, Old Essendon were in E central. Since then, they have moved to section C, and they are on top of the ladder. And I think their reserves are second. They could very easily win the premiership and move to section B.

So, their is probably no reason why the Reds couldn't do the same. The only way they will lose this years grand final, is if they don't show up, or if they get stacks of injuries.

Some may say that the standard might be a little higher in D2, and the Reds may struggle, but that hasn't stopped Old Essendon from being top of the ladder in section C. Remember that they were in E central. I believe if everything goes right, the Reds could be in the same position as Old Essendon. I hope that is the case anyway. Great to see the Fitzroy jumper again, and great to have a side in the Northern suburbs dominate. Keep it up. Bury that scum from Richmond.

Although I have posted an earlier suggestion about a move to the D.V.F.L for the Fitzroy Reds, I think that the Ammo's are a good league to be in because of the ability to climb up the divisions which is almost impossible in the D.V.F.L and in other suburban leagues.

There have been some cases where teams like Old Essendon have climbed up the divisions, there have been others like Parkside who were once in B Grade are now in D2 Grade, and University Blacks who were in A Grade and now are in D2, that have gone down the slippery slope.

The standard of D2 isn't that bad, but if the Reds can keep their nucleus of players and pick up a few other blokes, I can't see why they can't be competitive next year after they become Premiers and Champions in the One's and the Two's.

Its good to see a Fitzroy jumper be associated with success once more.
