The Reds got up again today, against an opposition that probably gave us the best run for our money so far, and yet we still pummelled them by a whopping margin.
I think the final score was :
Fitzroy Reds 17.20.122
St Johns 6.8.44
St Johns had settled as 3rd best team so far this year, so we were expecting a good show, and we got one.
Up 2 goals to 1 in the first quarter, and kicking to the hoodoo end in the second, we were unsettled a little when St Johns booted the first couple of goals. Well, us fans in the peanut gallery might have been unsettled, but the Reds didn't seem to fuss, banging on 8 unanswered majors for the remainder of the term.
In fact the east end was where our two big quarters came from, unusual seeing that we usually do better in the other direction.
St Johns continued to play great footy, strong marking, and one spectacular Doc Wheildon goal in the last quarter. But, as suspected, the quality of opposition simply set the wheels in motion for the Reds to up their workrate, and we still got away for a 78 point win.
The second quarter, in which we kicked 8 goals to 2, basically deflated the other team, though they still fought hard for everything afterward.
The noise from the decent-sized crowd was a welcome delight, and the number of old Roys scarves around the ground continues to grow.
The reserves also got up, I think it was 14 goals to 5 or something like that, so both seniors and F Troop have now played every other team, and remain on top of their respective ladders, undefeated.
When promoted in the Ammos, can a team skip a division?
For those who didn't hear the suspect attempt at crooning on the hill in the last quarter, or at least couldn't make out the lyrics, this is what I blurted, to the tune of Goodnight Irene :
Sometimes we win by a little.
Sometimes we win by a lot.
Sometimes we're faced with a challenge.
But a challenge is something you're not.
St Johns, goodnight.
St Johns, goodnight.
Goodnight St Johns, goodnight St Johns.
You'll beat us in our dreams.
I have not yet begun to embarass myself ...
Next week is Richmond Centrals, at Brunny Street.
Thursday night coming is the natter and noggin night, or whatever they call it now, at the Lord Newry Hotel. I'll find more info about it and chuck a bit of a plug in. Maybe someone from the club reading this can do it for me?
... and I'm spent.
