Magnificent movie. Always loved it.

Having said that, Dances With Wolves cannot simply be dismissed. That was brilliant too. My wife had to teach Dances With Wolves recently and I sat and watched it again. Just brilliant.

Obviously How Green was my Valley is a better example of the Academy getting it wrong - over Citizen Kane.

In high school I did a presentation on Goodfellas.

Was even allowed to show some of it, namely the scene where HH takes KH to the Copacabana.

Greatest single shot scene ever, in my opinion.

She was teaching economics to an ESL class and it was in the curriculum to teach the different methods of trading. Not her choice, she is 10 years younger than me, had no interest in DWW until she had to teach it.

As I said in my original post, I love Goodfellas and would choose it over Dances With Wolves, but DWW should not simply be dismissed. It is not like it was a warm up for Waterworld and all the other dross that KC produced later on.

Ordinary People beat Raging Bull for best movie by the way. I would think that is a bigger disgrace.

Goodfellas is brilliant, and is reasonably close to fact, in some areas.
But don't rubbish Dances with wolves because of Kevin Costner
who I don't mind at all , Dances with wolves was bloody excellent.
You don't compare these types of movies with each other, you just
don't. You know why.

Jeolosy is a curse. You Costner haters over do it. But you don't really know why , do you. Will you be making us all offers we can't refuse, ha ha , tom sauce and plastic guns.
Take in a little bit of common sense when talking about the art of making movies, your in the mind gansters are all artists , you know, actors. They are representing other people brilliantly.
Just as Dances with Wolves represented a time and a situation brilliantly.
Joe Pesci and DeNero and dare I say James Gandolfini are artists not murderous gansters.
They aren't real kids we're dicussing movies not the mob.
And I can tell you , if you really and truelly met a real mobster I don't think that you'd be worshipping them . But Gandolfini is a brilliant actor and also played in a movie where he sang , a kind of light opera, can't remember the name.
But hero worship of characters is very funny , we all love them , our tough heros' but they're actors. So remember your discussing movies and Costner made a ripper with DWW. As did the producers directors actors did when pretending to be gangsters in a very clever way. The word wank comes to mind when I read some of the rubbishing posts
you folks send knocking anything you don't like , some are in fantasy land.

I don't follow oscars etc like you Jimdocker, so I didn't know Ordinary People beat Raging Bull . Raging Bull was/is artistry in the acting and movie making world of the gold plated highest order. Your correct in two things that comment of yours and also Vealesy piss off.

Not sure about that, but I do think that Goodfellas gets too easily dismissed in comparison to the Godfather, simply because it's 'the Godfather'.

Despite both films being in the gangster/mafia genre, they're very very different movies. I find them incredibly hard to compare.

Sounds like a fun assignment. What did you discuss about that scene? The camera work where it follows them walking in from the outside to the table without cutting away? That scene captures an entrance into a building like I've never seen before. Reality.

Goodfellas is a great movie - the only bit i don't like is toward the end when Ray Liotta talks to the camera - it was only one scene but i thought Scorsese made a mistake by leaving that scene in - it seemed totally out of place.

Re Dances with Wolves, also a great movie takes a bit more watching but Semmlers camera work was fantastic and no wonder he got the oscar.


Field of dreams was a good Coster movie also.
 
Though I don't rate Goodfellas as highly as I do for Casino, you can't go past the De Niro 3-in-1 Blu-Ray special they have going on at JBHiFi at the moment: Once Upon A Time In America, Heat and GoodFellas in 1, for only $24.95

My local gym is wher they shot the pool scenes in Raging Bull. Every time i walk in there i just imagine Bobby D walking around the joint,
