Trying to pinpoint where it all started to go downhill? 2022/2023 was pivotal to their sustained future - and huge errors of judgement were made over 18-24 months.

They won 10 in a row to start the 2022 season and were flying; there was the fight between Melksham and May at the pub and then losing to the Swans and Lions in spectacular fashion to bow out in straight sets to finish 2022.

Losing Luke Jackson at the end of 2022 and Brody Grundy at the end of 2023, and who didn't play a game in the second half of 2023 was a real body blow for the Dees. Debatably, two of the best rucks in the business.

But for me as a fan of the sport - it was the game against Brisbane at the Gabba in 2022 and the Petty incident where it all started to come crashing down. It showed the competition that they were mentally fragile, and the whole thing came crashing down. They have never been the same side since that night.

Is here a POLL for the next coach yet?
Kane Cornes or David King should apply. They are the self-appointed geniuses of football who are always very quick to point out what others are doing wrong. Here's their chance to show us how it's done.

How about Gary Lyon take over instead of potting every other coach the gutless flog.

That would be an absolute dream. The spineless weasel would finally find out exactly what it's like to be the one who gets blamed when things go wrong. Or even better, he'd be able to implement all those magical solutions only he can see from the commentary box. During the recent Essendon/Richmond game he demonstrated his wisdom by revealing that late in the game Essendon really "needed to do something". No shit. I'm sure that never occurred to the coaches actually at the ground.

He's a cnut.

To be fair there are plenty of others in the footy media these days as well. See my post below. G.Lyon is still at the top of the tree for self-confessed excellence in all things.

With the added bonus of us not having to hear from them daily

Honestly, this has been a complete and utter waste of what should have been a dynasty team.

For whatever reason, a side stacked with talent has seemingly eaten itself alive. Clayton Oliver and Steven May are the obviously divisive personalities in that team - but a side with that much talent in the middle, including a generational ruckman, should have won at least two flags.

No disrespect to Geelong, Collingwood, Brisbane or whoever the premier will be this year, but it's not like there has been any one outstanding side that has truly taken the comp by the horns since.

Saying a team should have been a dynasty team is almost as deluded as saying a retiring player 'deserved a flag', it takes more than talent to achieve such things.

Thats AFL media in a nutshell. I mean look at Hirdy , straight back into media and telling clubs how to do things.

Which is why it has to be put down to leadership, be it on field, in the coaching box or at an executive level, being the reason a list with so many weapons and Key players all in their prime, failed to deliver anything more.

The hardest thing to do is acquire the right talent and develop them and Melbourne had that part on lock.

Why is it standard practice in the AFL for a sacked coach to front up at the club’s press conference announcing their own departure?

The club wants to signal a fresh start, but also needs to appear respectful toward the person they just let go.

At the same time, the outgoing coach is expected to sit there quietly and take it - often without being able to say what they truly think.

It’s an uncomfortable performance where both sides are playing roles, and neither can be fully honest.

No one really benefits from it, and it’s hard to imagine any other professional sport handling things this way.

Rough to be let go after an 83 point win, but clearly not a decision that came out of nowhere.

17, 17, 16 wins over 3 years is good going but unfortunately for them after 2021 they haven't won a final. Straight sets twice followed by missing the finals twice is underperforming for where the list was in 2021. Looking at the list profile now it doesn't look like it was built to contend in 2026. Their eggs were in the 2022-24 basket because they were coming off a flag. They were the best side in it in 2021, H&A and finals.

Not every good side is on the verge of a dynasty though. Bris, Geel, Haw, Rich all won 3 flags over 3-5 year periods. Others like WC, WB, Geelong 2022, Collingwood 2023, Brisbane 2024 are for the time being anyway one and done. Freo won nothing, St Kilda won nothing, Adelaide won nothing in the mid 2000s. Melbourne still have a (grand old) flag to show for the Goodwin era.

Which helped us enormously as we adapted to the new era of equalisation - no cut-throat expectations, no messiah complex (Abletts notwithstanding). No pressure to cheat if results didn't come, either.
Steven Dank says “hello” as to does Dean Robinson who was employed from around 2006 to 2010, as Head of Conditioning / Rehabilitation at Geelong. The two later became the face of the drug saga at Essendon.
Funny that.

Reckon the top-end of their list is pretty much as good as it gets. When they're up and about they're excellent. The Oliver / Petracca distractions haven't helped. I did hear the decision was based around Goodwin's clique - i.e. a group of senior players who could do no wrong in his eyes and getting preferential treatment, and others getting jack of it. (Came from someone who's a relative of one of their best young players atm). Think Goodie may sit out of the game for a while, as I'm not sure other clubs would invite him along - if the above is true.

I guess you're also happy to dismiss Tom Hawkins achievement as well when he won the 2020 Coleman Medal?
Yep, and I ain't trolling. Hopelessly compromised year - not even convinced we deserved to be in the Series Finale anyway.

But I see the Dank Conspiracy has raised its head - so you Tigers fans better talk to each other on this one.
PS Literally this is the first time I'd heard that Hawkins won the Coleman that year. Utterly useless "achievement"

Correct, should have gotten rid of the problem as things were already on a knifes edge back then.
they thumped Geelong by 83 points in the prelim, and then had a 100 point turnaround in the GF to beat the Dogs by 74 points.

If that's being "on a knifes edge", I hate to have seen what would have happened if they were stable and on the same page.

I implore everyone to read through this entire thread and count how many Melbourne supporters are here posting. I've counted one. If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

This has to be the least engaged supporter base in the AFL. Maybe all their supporters are over 75?
Check out their club page. Its on fire
