What's in it?
Vitamin C (As Ascorbic Acid), N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, Caffeine Anhydrous (135mg), Mucuna Pruriens (Standardized For L-Dopa), Bitter Orange (Citrus Aurantium)(Fruit)(30% Synephrine)(Advantra Z®), Niacinamide, Folate (As Folic Acid), Pyridoxine 5-Phosphate, Vitamin B12 (As Methylcobalamin), Calcium, Folate, Vitamin B12, Beta Alanine, Creatine Nitrate, Arginine AKG

Doesn't AFL rules prevent clubs from using intravenous methods?

With this in mind regardless of the Outcome of the WADA investigation isn't Essendon potentially in breach of AFL rules

On Hird, I understand that coaches are not players and as a result they are entitled to take any substance that is legal within the community, my main concern is that it seems players welfare has not been well managed, many of these practices have been carried out within the coaches inner sanctum and outside of club DR knowledge and that players were formed to sign waivers

Bird to say that he was unsure on what supplements he was administered is also a concern

It's not a good look

Very thorough, thank you. But what I meant was, what's in it that's banned?

Oh and do you get those tingles from Beta Alanine? The first time I took it I thought I was watching Darren Jarman snap a freak goal on the left......

Fantastic question.

CBF'd going through WADA massive ass list to check. Just says not approved by:......and lists off the bodies that don't like it, including WADA.

My guess would be the N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, Mucuna Pruriens or Niacinamide.

All the WADA banned substances like this, have very minimal effect. They're the 0.0001% increases in ability to workout.

Was there a caffeine rule brough in in the AFL? I know there is in some sports, and that would push at it as well.

Yep.

Freaked the hell outta me the first time. I overshot the rec'd dosage for first usage and freaked out a little bit, decided I should smash 2 litres of water to flush it......

It can't be L-Tyrosine. That's a naturally occurring amino acid, it's in all protein supplements.

Go get the Age. This is the first three pages - four different journalists and three articles, including exclusives from the Age Investigative Unit.

Probably the only article you'll read today that discusses illegal extracts fom Pig's Brains being used on modern sportsmen.

My uneducated guess is Advantra Z as it boosts metabolism. The level of Synephrine (from Bitter oranges looks like it is used to make Advantra Z) is very high.

Synephrine is an amphetamine-like substance that creates a similar reaction in the body as ephedrine.

L-Dopa is probably suspect too.... Doesnmatter that they got it out of a bean, the extract has high concentrations of it.
L-DOPA is the precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and epinephrine (adrenaline)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-DOPA

That's without looking up any WADA list though. The rest are just amino acids or vitamins and look innocuous.

Also getting a jab in the stomach is subcutaneous not intraveanous there for if the supplement is not banned they may have a technicality to argue too.

That depends upon whether the article is intended to be news or opinion. It shouldn't be both, within the same article. If it's news, then she's out of line. If it's opinion, then she's entirely within her rights to state what she thinks the outcome should be.

She is writing an opinion piece to accompany a frontpage investigative article that alleges Essendon players were taking peptides from pig's brains (among other things). Jake Niall also wrote a pretty scathing commentary.

I read the Age Online articles. It is pretty damning...... even if some of the stuff is not banned, there has to be health concerns about taking un-trialled and un-approved substances.

See, this is why I hate about modern journalists;

Your job is meant to be to REPORT what's happened Caro.

You aren't the bloody judiciary or executive who gets to decide who does what - she shouldn't even comment on that.

Nothing worse than a fence sitter. Of course she's supposed to outline what she knows and draw a conclusion from it

Blammo.

The weight loss hormone they were taking sounds interesting; did a quick google over lunch - excellent results through trials.

Getting murkier by the day for the Dons and Hird especially...

LEAKED text messages allegedly reveal James Hird and Stephen Dank boasting about Essendon's drugs supplement program.

The text messages, shown on Channel 9 tonight, have not been verified, but appear to show a close relationship between the Bombers coach and the sports scientist at the centre of the club's controversial injections program.
Hird has declared he will coach Essendon against Fremantle tomorrow night and the club today stood by him after claims emerged he had been injected by Dank with a substance banned for use by players.
Channel 9 says it has six months' worth of text messages between Hird and Dank, including the following exchanges:

Hird: Good work today mate. The boys were up and about. We have lots to work with.
Dank: IV start next week. And Thymosin and Ubiquinone. We will start to see some real effects.
Dank: Is (player) in your best 22?
Hird: At his best, yes. Why?
Dank: I am just working out his injections for the year. As an older leaner body I might infuse him more particularly for the recovery. I often IV the older bodies.
Dank: I also know that they (a rival club) are trying everything they can in supplements and recovery modes to win this premiership.
Hird: But not as good as us in that area!!!
