OK.... I'm trying to win my league against my putz mates and thats it.

Would having Rhys Palmer from the get go be a mistake ? It would just mean I'd be starting Barlow or Mitch Banner in my midfield until Rhys returns. I'd rather not burn a trade grabbing Palmer when he comes back. Thoughts ?

NFI. I hate him. There are better options at the same-ish price +/- 5k.

Indeed, it's doing my head in.

All that I can see is him being a consistent and durable option, which is fine but hardly a call for him to be in everyones team.

For example, after 90 games you wouldn't expect anymore natural improvement and he's not discount priced after injury, so you're not getting a risk/reward bargin.

Plus he's priced at 83 and has averaged 86 in 2 pre-season games, so it's not like people have jumped on board due to a possible role change or a stirling pre-season.

Argh, I just don't see it.

Why is doing your head in?

Sounds like you should be happy that everyone has him.

No Shaw for me and not exactly planning on going light with the Woods players.
This does my head in.

You don't think he's a good option, and you've done research to back it up, yet just simply because he's in other people's team you are getting frustrated and still considering him.

Back your own judgement ffs. You don't have to be a sheep.

He's a spud. Just goes slack on the comedown from a big game the week before.

You can't do anything when it happens. He will just get 50 points and that's it.

Sam Fisher does it too. If you think the occasional 120 is worth it then you are welcome to pick him.

Believe me, I've backed myself in plenty and I haven't posted my team on the "rate my team" thread because I don't need the approval and I don't need people seeing my less common picks. I had just seen Shaw in so many teams I did start to get self conscious.

As though Shaw was another Dustin Martin and I was the only one who didn't know about it.

I was actually suspecting a role change for him, like Mick had come out in the media and said "Yeah, Shaw will be used as a spare man in defence and we'll be using him everytime", or something like that, and I didn’t catch the artile.

Don't get freaked out at me for covering my bases with one player. There are 3 threads of people asking for advice about their entire teams for that.

Well yes there is an article on afl.com saying that Shaw will play more in the midfield this year...

Though... i don't see how. Still see him as HB that runs through midfield with the ball. Great player at breaking the zone but not for my DT team.

Getting a bit off topic but seeings we are talking about Shaw here I will post it in here and not in Defenders Thread.

He is not a bad pick IMO.

The last 4 years he has averaged 89, 85, 82, 83. Very solid for a defender. There seems to be this perception that he is injury prone/ misses lots of games, but in 4 years he has only missed 9 games. Pretty good there.

There was a period where he was getting rollercoaster scores (and I mean a serious rollercoaster: In 2008 he had five scores under fourty  but still managed 8 scores over 100 including 150, 136 & 125). However this was a period where he was randomly getting tagged by some opposition coaches who thought he was a threat.

It has since been discovered that tagging Heath Shaw doesn't do that much and teams were tagging him out of the game but still getting flogged by Collingwood so I think these extreme rollercoaster scores are mainly a thing of the past. Not to mention if he moves to the midfield he certainly isn't going to get tagged alongside Dids, Swan, Pendles, Davis. I have a feeling that he would love a midfield/wingman role.

As a defender at 365k I think if you pick him up and he averages 85 then he has done his job and the evidence proves he is capable of doing that and may even improve and go closer to the nineties considering he might play more in the midfield. He is still only 24, thus entering prime age for a player of his type.

Guys im having a massive problem atm.
Im playing no rookies in the FWD line at this point in time, if i was to downgrade one of the last 3 FWD players - gray, zeibell or danger, it will free up cash so i can help my rucks - kruz and tippet and then help out with either upgrading suban or barlow to trengove.

What do you guys think? I dont think there is a certain starter in any team for a rookie fwd this year.

Surely trying to win your league should not be a major influence on your team... The only difference is trading during the year to beat specific opponents and keeping trades in hand towards the finals. other then that i cant see why your initial squad should have any difference to if you were trying to win the car (Maybe a few less risks though).

So no dont pick palmer now. Get him in when he plays if you feel he is worth it.

This isn't true, there are a lot of strategy differences between going for league win and going for overall ranking, including the starting sqaud. One year in my league we had one of the top 10 ranked nationally and he didnt even make our prelims. He got a bit unlucky but basically his end team wasn't that good and he used his last trade in round 18.

The whole idea of going for a league win is to peak for the finals. You need a really sweet team from rounds 18-22. Whereas for overall ranking rounds 18-22 are of the same worth as rounds 1-5. If you are going for league win then you can afford to have a slow start, the first 3 rounds don't even count.

That's your 2 main differences but not all. Guys like Hille and Palmer will get fitter as the year goes on so should be better at league finals time. No league games for the first couple of weeks has to be factored in.

Guys looking purely at league can consider more seriously players like Judd and Petrie

Thats actually quite intersting ...

Now i see where i strayed. I personally am going for overall ranking and if a league win results as a consequence then i will be very happy...
