This article escaped my attention and was pretty well hidden actually. A good summary of the pies playing for Willy last weekend.

MAGPIES AS SEAGULLS – VFL ROUND 3
15. Chris Egan
I’ve been playing Chris mainly in the backline to get him to just be a little bit tighter with the way he plays and teach him that one-on-one physical sort of game. But I moved him forward, just to see if he’d give us something, and he kicked two goals, and he had a hand in a couple of others. He’s that type of player who’s very versatile, so to go forward, kick a couple of goals, hopefully that’ll give him a little bit of a lift to really press for senior selection over the coming weeks. Our idea is we need to train him to be a little bit more accountable, a little bit more one-on-one, we’ve been persevering with him down back, so to go forward, he showed me what he’s actually capable of doing.

19. Ben Davies
Ben was an interesting one. I had higher expectations on Ben, but I did rotate him throughout the game, because I was just conscious Collingwood may need someone else for ANZAC Day, so I just had in the back of my mind that we just look after him than we would some other players, and I think Ben took that as a chance not to be as intense as he should’ve been, but he’s been in fine form, so hopefully he’ll bounce back in the next game we play.

28. Danny Stanley
Danny will play in the reserves this weekend because he missed those three or four weeks with an ankle injury, but he showed some really good signs on the weekend. He was playing as a half back flanker and snuck forward and kicked a goal. He took a ripper mark from a long kick out and did alright on his man. He got a little bit of the ball. He had 14 possessions, so I think he’s heading in the right direction at the moment, another game this weekend will certainly help him.

29. Ryan Cook
Cooky’s just been struggling a little bit, and I think it’s more of a mindset thing, because I believe he’s going to be a very good player in time, the quicker he believes that, the better he’s going to be. I think he took some steps on the weekend to moving towards that, and especially in the last quarter, he had about nine possessions, and in a quarter where we really needed someone to stand up, he was very busy, and worked hard and got a bit of the ball. He used his fitness, which he’s very good at, to the advantage of the team.

38. Tyson Goldsack
Tyson nearly played 100 per cent game time, so we’re trying to build him up, because I know that Mick’s fairly keen on what he sees. It’s just a matter of getting that conditioning into him so that he’s capable of maybe taking that next step to senior level. He probably didn’t have as many possessions as last week, but we did experiment with him on the wing, half forward and also backline, so we’re just starting to dabble in a few different things with him to give him that opportunity just to impress in those areas.

41. Sharrod Wellingham (rookie list)
He had 26 possessions in about 80 per cent of overall game time, so it was a fantastic achievement, and he looks a really likely prospect going forward. I suppose the dilemma you face with those young players is when to bring them into the senior squad, so Mick will wrestle with that over the coming weeks, but if he keeps his form up he’s certainly going to put a lot of pressure on the selection process. So there is the opportunity there, with a couple of long-term injuries, we could step him up at some stage, so we’re just considering that at the moment.

43. Martin Clarke (rookie list)
Martin’s an interesting one. At times he looks really, really good, at other times he made a couple of errors, which is just not knowing the game. On the weekend, he transferred the ball across from the defensive side to the attacking side, and the ball held up and they marked it, and he probably thought he was doing the right thing and he’s learning. He just needs to play a lot of games.

44. Daniel Nicholls (rookie list, currently elevated to senior list due to long-term injury to Sean Rusling)
Daniel had 17 possessions, he’s just learning his trade still. He’s had that taste of senior football now, we’d still like him to do a little bit more, because of having that senior experience, but he’s going along ok. He’s doing a lot of good stuff at stoppages, he’s playing through the midfield, so he’s getting great opportunity to develop at the moment.

45. Brent Macaffer (rookie list)
Brent’s a bit of an experimental player as a rookie. I started him forward, because Ben Reid pulled out in case he was needed for Wednesday, so he got the opportunity to play centre half forward, full forward, forward pocket, and kicked a couple of goals. So it was just good in his development to have that experience and play probably 80-85 per cent game time.

Please note: Ben Reid, Chris Bryan, Sam Iles and Shane Wakelin all didn’t play in the case they were required for senior selection on ANZAC Day.
