I was just looking at the playing list on the club site and Gourdis is listed on the senior list, while fellow rookies O'Rielly and Hicks who also were rookie elevations this year remain on the rookie list. So without any official word from the club or the AFL, is it safe to assume that Gourdis has now been upgraded to the senior list?

had to be done. good luck to the lad. good to see hes the only one. we dont have a need to promote anyone else and those who are talked about have hardly earnt it. no matter either way orielly hicks will get games along with any other ready to go rookie we take.
cant wait for gourdis grimes and post all in the same backline even if they all prove to be failures.

yep for real. has to be a better future with grimes gourdis and post than thursfield mcguane and moore. even if they fail we will be attempting to adress list needs and get kpds up to scratch.

right at this minute gourdis and post would be getting a game and would be my preferred choice in the key defensive posts. moore would be my third tall option atm.
the thing is i dont know if any of grimes post or gourdis will make it hence the comment even if they fail. only one way to find out dont you think.
in saying this like a lot of posters i have high hopes for all three and think all three well worth taking the punt and putting in the time and effort.
heres hoping eh.

Pretty sure Gourdis and Relton were upgraded to the senior list at our two rookie upgrade windows whereas Hicks and O'Rielly were elevated to fill in for players on the LTI. Quite sure the former is more permanent where the player is actually on the senior list (the club can decide to keep them there at season's end, whereas the latter is only temporary (min 11 weeks as per LTI length I'd assume) and not on the actual senior list.

Just sayin...

Reckon Gourdis will definitely be elevated however.

So you can spend the next 2 years bagging the crap out of them;)

well gourdis has had what 3 yrs hes hardly played a game do you see me bagging him. if in two yrs time hes where he is now for sure ill be asking the questions.
the other two will be given the same time and respect as is allways the way with me. i dont bag our young players but im certainly highly critical of those who have been around awhile and achieved stuff all.

an example of this would be rance a player i really liked at junior level but to watch him play at this level well its a worry. poor footskills poor decision making very poor in the air and yet not once have i called for his head. im a firm believer of giving them time to show one way or the other that they can play at afl level.
if alex rance displays the same weaknesses this yr and performs at the same levels well yep after 4 yrs of the same i will be perhaps questioning the wisdom of keeping him. while i think he has deficiencies atm i still think it prudent to play him and keep him.
the real tough question for all clubs and all supporters is how long is long enough.

your trouble is if someone questions a players skill set, or pace or smarts or performance etc etc is not good enough, your bagging them. when in fact all one is doing is pointing out a percieved weakness.
this attitude still bemuses me with many supporters.
we are going thru 26 yrs of mediocrity, with so many deficient players going thru our system and yet when mediocrity is possibly pointed out the head goes in the sand and the defense begins.

i dont bag. i criticise and i give my reasons almost every time. and those who are primarily copping my criticisms are not our youngsters but those who have had plenty of time to prove themselves or players who are chronically deficient imo.

anyway in reply to your drivel no i wont be bagging them. not for for at least 2 or 3 yrs, but i will in all likely hood point out any flaws that i percieve to be there.

Gourdis has been at the club for a number of years and the only thing he should really be lacking in at this time is AFL experience. I would play him instead of mcguane or thursty for the first half of the season and let him settle into the AFL.

Now is the time to try and settle a few kids into some roles in the backline to see if they can adapt from potential to AFL players. We all have our own opinion on mcguane, thursty & moore and now is the time for Gourdis, Rance and perhaps Post/Astbury to stand up and lock themselves in our backline.

Now that he has been promoted he must earn his spot on the list IMO:thumbsu:

Great to see Gourdis is officially elevated. I'm a bit of a fan. I guess next season is his make or break year though. He needs to take this opportunity or find himself most likely de-listed.

You'd be wrong. List elevations during the season are only applicable for that season. They're all still rookies at the end of the season and have to be upgraded all the same.

It's a moot point anyway, because Gourdis wasn't upgraded at the start of the year, he was a LTI upgrade towards the latter half of the season.

I reckon Gourdis is the most promising FB on our list, Astbury the best bet for a long term CHB.

We haven't seen much of Gourdis, but the signs are there. Watching a few replays, he positions himself well, is very athletic and at 193 cm 93kg he is the perfect size, tall, but still quick and mobile.

Has to be upgraded, and I'd be giving him 22 games next year.

Happy to have it clarified :thumbsu:

So looking at the list:

Additions: Grigg, Gourdis (upgraded)

Deletions: Collins, Tambling, Cousins, Hislop, McMahon, Polo, Simmonds, Thompson, Polak (rookie), Roberts (rookie), Gilligan (rookie)

Retained rookies: Contin, Hicks, Westhoff, O'Reilly

Therefore,
8 list spots open and 4 rookie spots open.
2 list spots to be filled by Gourdis and Grigg. PSD pick will go to Houli.

So we will add 5 kids in the ND (6,29,46,50,63) and 4 rookies.
No real need to add in our compo pick as it will only upgrade us to 6,27,30,46,50....

It will be interesting to see how the backline is put together each week. McGuane and Moore are our best defenders, however, Astbury and Gourdis are our future. Thursfield will not get many opportunities IMO.

Methinks this may have been relayed to young will and thus his efforts to get out of the club ensued.

Isnt it a rule you can not be a rookie for more than three years? Im sure thats why the Goo has been elevated
The Goo would have only been on the rookie list for two years maximum.

In his first year he was on the senior list.

Strength of character and culture.

Let's hope the club fosters both, if so, don't rule out seeing him next year. All about his application.

Hopefully he has the right attitude. He will end up in the same boat as McMahon and Tuck. He will either fight his way back into our best 22 or he will fall away and be delisted. I think he is the kind of bloke who will fight tooth and nail to prolong his career...

I think there is determination abt him. Do you remember how skinny he was when he first came on board. You can see how hard he must have worked to look like he does these days. I had a quick chat to him at vic park over the summer in 08. ALso struck me as a bit shy (Richo like) but I suppose he was still under 20. I hope he goes well certainly comes with alot of athletic ability.:thumbsu:

Thats my memory of it FIXXXX

i remember we had to re-draft him earlier than what we wanted to in the rookie draft because Freo were allegedly sniffing around and keen on him ..

I could be wrong but rumour was we wanted to take Tom Rockliff with our first rookie pick :o

Anyway ... he is a great story if he goes on and makes it at AFL level . I have only heard second hand stories and rumours about this kid but apparently he has had his "battles" ... good luck to him and well done

tom rockliff certainly would of been handy, but we have gourdis and lets hope he can develop into a good player for our footy club.

has a long way to go, decision making, timing and reading of the play need to improve significantly, as does his kicking, but that will imrpove as these other aspects improve.
