I just read this on the Age online about a new timetable for Melbourne trains.

This is just government waffle gone mad:

"Travel times on some lines will increase by between two and five minutes in a bid by Metro to reduce the number of delayed trains.

Journey times have been revised to reflect actual journey times," a Metro spokeswoman said. "This will significantly reduce the instance of late-running trains and therefore provide a higher level of reliability and confidence."

So you've been lying to us all of these years about when the trains are supposed to arrive.

The spin is unbelievable.

We habitually run late, so now the timetables reflect that fact...

Way ahead of you up here on that one. The best was the decree that any train that arrived within a five minute window was 'on time'.

You need to achieve a zen-like state of acceptance with these things. The train will come when it comes.

I regularly get the 'your next train is delayed'. Then by the time that journey finishes has somehow morphed into the exact arrival time of the scheduled next train, which is no doubt cancelled.

The sham with the Melbourne system is that we actually pay a premium for it.

.

Those SLA are the same here as well.

The worst is, if a train doesn't arrive then it's not included in the "late train stats". So metro trains (connex did the same thing) would cancel trains which are going to be late in order to meet their service level agreements in their contract. So if they need 80% of trains to arrive on time and five out of ten are going to be late, they'll cancel 3 of those trains in order to meet their SLA.

It's so full of shit. What happened to idealism and wanting to do a good job. People are so despondent these days, feeling good about what you do, well, that is a pipe dream.*

*I'm bitter about work at the moment ;)
