Without going through the whole list I'd just say we have too many c graders and not enough elite talent in key areas. Obviously, we have massive holes in our Key position roles both in attack and defense.

Thankfully a fair proportion of those rated anything below B are there due to their youthful inexperience. Hopefully some of them become b-grade or better with more exposure.

How does what we paid for him diminish his rating? He is either A-grade or he isn't. Definite A-grade for mine even on his diminished 2017 output due to apparent injury issues.
I agree, but it seems that opposition supporters opinions are swayed because of the high price we paid.

Tom Phillips is fast becoming a severely under-rated kid on our list....

Controversial position but at 21 years old, averaging 21 disposals and 5 marks a game (already looking like a top 3 gut runner on the team) in my opinion his output to date has been more than De Goey and looks more like a bloke we can lock in to be a quality player for the next decade. Not to mention he has half the games experience Jordan has had, and we got him at pick 58 instead of pick 5.

De Goey's ceiling is higher but gets rated too highly for his output which seems at times erratic.

Talking to a friend recently and he stated that he grades players on whether they would walk into the best team of the year.

Not like picking the All Australian team as he scratches his head at some of the selections but say Sydney is the best team, who would be an automatic walk-in?
Pendlebury
Treloar
Grundy
Elliott
Howe

Add Sidebottom and, alas, that may be it Maggie.

Moore and DeGoey also have the talent to be in this group by the end of '18.

I'd argue that Phillip's actually gets over-rated on the back of those stats. Overall, I don't rate the entirety of his game as much as some do. Would love to see some comparisons against direct opponents but my gut feeling is that while he racks up the numbers his opponent is doing equally as much damage, if not more, the other way. If he could play a more accountable game, less ball watching, and display a greater game awareness, I'd definitely start to rate him. At the moment, he just frustrates me and I wouldn't have him in my best 22.

Off the top of my head, would add Sidebottom and Wells. Could make a strong case for WHE, Moore, DeGoey, Adams and Maynard. Conversely, who from the Swans do you think would walk into our 22?

Good question. Buddy, Hannebery, Kennedy, Heeney ????

Off the top of my head I'd add Parker and Rampe. Again, could make a case for a few others like Reid, Papley, Mills and Jones and I'd love Hayward but the quantum going either way isn't overly skewed either way. Not sure what that actually says other than the competition is relatively even.

Fair enough, i would add though that during a stretch of 4 games in the middle of the season where he was having a hot patch he was rated bt AFL Player Ratings as the 13th best player in the AFL for those weeks.

If he can make the improvement he did from 2016 to 2017 across to 2018 he will be a jet.

I don’t think we’re a realistic shot at a premiership, but I won’t put a ceiling on what we can do in 2018. Although I do think we need to put a floor on performance. Enough of the pussyfooting around it’s time to get shit done!

+++++1

How is callum brown a c grade player?
I’m with you.

I assume you mean he right down low thus far or not to be rated yet as not enough games.

Not sure what you mean by recent performance, but that sure is a weird list. In the games this year (which really is all we've got to work on since in 6 months who knows what happens to a player), i.e. AFLX, intraclub, JLT1, I have these differences:

A-
Thomas
De Goey
Langdon

B
Aish
C Brown
Kirby

C
Maynard
Pendlebury (quiet as in the JLT)
Broomhead (c- the JLT, B+ the intraclub)

All of which goes to show, it's too early really to say.

Recent doesn't mean a performance in the last JLT game.

Recent is a body of work during the last 1 to 2 seasons and when applicable balancing it against previous seasons.

For instance Pendlebury was once A+ but for me his peak period has passed now and that category should be reserved for the few like a Martin or Dangerfield.

I still see him ahead of the likes of Treloar thus they get a - attached but they may change come the end of 2018.

If I was to examine the body of work for Langdon across his first two seasons as an example then he would have been rated a solid B but he's slipped since then due in part to injury.

Obviously I have not attached a rating to players with limited exposure at senior level.

Personally I think to many people concentrate on the very best games of a player when making a judgement and not what they consistently produce.

Anyway it's an entirely subjective process with no absolute right or wrong conclusions.

My problem is with how the parts of the list don't fit together. Our forwards are mainly marking forwards yet we don't have the midfield to put it to their advantage or the backline to create fast transition to get our forwards one out.

Our list is basically made up of marking forwards, contested ball winning midfielders and intercept defenders. There are exception of course but it's a poorly balanced list.

Graded the players A+ to E based on 2017 senior games and going into 2018. Thoughts? Do yours if you want.
An interesting look back. Still pretty spot on. Elliott is back hopefully he can get back to A+.
