got no problem with legal graffiti but i ****ing hate campaigner* who think its their god given right to destroy other people's property

Uhhhh no. Tagging churches is considered a dick move and will get you hated pretty quickly.

There are different types of people that write graffiti.

Taggers - Generally kids or egomaniacs. These guys get caught up with the law pretty early on and usually go on to become criminals or quit early on in their 'career'.

Train painters - Much the same as the egomaniac taggers except they take their graffiti a lot more seriously. Trainpainters see themselves as the top of the food chain. These guys do it for the rush of the crime. Often nothing of what they do gets seen other than in flick books. They are very protective of their work often getting into squabbling beefs over politics of graffiti (ie: hotting up a yard). There are however guys that travel the world painting different systems that are less likely to be the staunch types and see it as a lifestyle.

Legal Eagles - In general these guys are the older types who have been painting a while and mainly enjoy the artistic side of graffiti rather than the law breaking element. Usually they have been busted too many times or have just gotten too old to paint a trackside/train at all times of the night.

Wall painters - Enjoy the artistic side of graffiti but also enjoy seeing there name everywhere.

All rounders - People that do a bit of each type of graffiti. These are usually people that are mid to late teens right through to their mid twenties. The younger ones are living the lifestyle of a graffiti artist and usually devote a lot of dedication to it in their daily lives. The older ones are usually not quite ready to give it away or see going legal as selling out.

Street Artists - Often considered fake amongst the graffiti community. These guys are usually uni students or hipsters trying to be cool. They will however occasionally make money out of their art.

Graffiti is a hard thing to explain and the best thing I can come up with is it's a game for teenagers and adults trying to be the most 'up' or the best at what they do. People that get heavily involved in it can become addicted to it quite easily. There's a certain amount of escapism involved whilst painting a 'piece' or 'panel' that lets you forget about the world for that given moment. Kind of like going to a footy game.

If it wasn't illegal it'd be an x games sport by now IMO.
 
Make it legal and you've taken away most of the attraction to the vast majority of 'artists'.

Ha yeah I don't "graff" so don't know the terms that well. Do know a lot of people that do it heaps including a couple that are really well known on the Sandringham/Frankston lines.
 
Pretty much all graffiti artists started out as taggers, even the more Notable ones such as Reka, rone, phibs and pilfa began this way. Haha is an exception though as he started off doing rollies

I can explain it. It's a game low IQ and poor people play. Maybe there are one or two people that can go from zero to a good painter without vandalizing something that their tax money will never pay for... but I doubt it.

No offense intended personally to you, but the majority of it is a crock of ****. Many try to claim they're artists by painting their crap all over private property. If society 'backed' them to an extent and actually enjoyed seeing it everywhere then I could somehow understand it, but the fact is that most people hate it, with the exception being a brief intrigue at a detailed piece.

IMO, if people want to do it, that's their choice. But get a job and by a ****ing wall to paint.

Tagging someones private property is a low pathetic act however you want to look at it. Another poster earlier obviously knew what I meant because he said keying a car was a lower act.... See the path we're going down Nicky?? Now you tell me if gopower went a little extreme or not by bringing up the f***** holocaust.....

I wouldn't go THAT far but the fact that people spray colorful pictures all over our town for us to take pleasure in and don't get paid is generous. Usually people only give when they get something in return.

I see where you're coming from though. :)

And toothpick if you didn't actually mean graffiti is the lowest thing someone can do then its reasonable someone will pick you up or atleast ask you to clarify. Also you probably should calm down a bit. :)

I love graffiti, I love tags, and I even love reckless public destruction.

If only there were more talented artists running around in the middle of the night to cover all the horrible grey walls and billboards...

... but having said that... If you think it's cool writing on someone's fence, you're an idiot. When was the last time you saw a Banksy mural on someone's garage? There's more than enough walls in the city and on the side of suburban train lines- you don't need to use people's houses... for ****s sake!

Agree that it isn't a good idea to tag someones fence, having said that I would endorce a good graffiti artist to paint my fence.

My parents have an 8 foot high fence in their garden and wanted to paint a mural on it so i suggested they ask a street artist, they did and the street artist quoted them something like $1.5k payment per day... They usually work for loose change... Which just goes to show that street art, graffiti is a gift that should be appreciated.

A term used for people with crap looking tags or tagging in stupid spots. Or their tag is a stupid name. Usually toys are your 14-17 year olds.
