McPhee definitely wanted to go home.

And he had the dad from hell.

We just did the trade to get him home. We knew he could play, and certainly could have screwed a bit more out of the deal, but Essendon did well and we were focused on getting Headland out of the aftermath. Personally the moral is never let Sheedy in on a three way.

Just for the record, Connolly said during a 'meet the coach night' in 2004 that McPhee did not want to go home.

Back to the topic, Hay for Polak is a joke.

Agree, you fellas get r aped badly on that one.

What about the thread on the main board? Polak + 2nd Rounder for Fletcher, thoughts?

Cometti on 9 said "its fair to say that Freo have made their fair share of trade mistakes, and its my opinion that trading for Hay would be another one". Have to say I agree with him but just this once. Very disappointed if Freo trades Polak, and thats understating it a fair bit

Fletcher isn't what we need and neither is Kerr. We need a big body in the square- Judd, Ricciutto, Corey, Dal Santo type player. Obviously we're not going to trade for any of those players so the best idea is to stop trading for midfielders and develop our own.

Are we capable of it though? CC doesn't exactly have a great track record of turning players into hard tough nuts. The complete opposite in fact.

so you guys would be against a Fletcher for Polak trade? and if not, where would you want the draft picks going if they were involved. Realistically.

also on Polak, has he ever had a relativly huge bag kicked on him and CC has been forced to move him?

Hansen destroyed him in the first derby.

Would you be happy about it?

Not happy to lose Polak. He will become a very good key position player.

The offer is fair. At Fremantle i feel that too much of our talent is stacked above 190cm. It would be nice to draft some exciting youngsters that would ensure our midfield clearances improve over the next decade. Because at the moment we are ranked 16th in clearances. Which is remarkable given 3 teams at the bottom of the table won 5 games or less.

Picks 9,10 and 13 would allow us to draft 3 reasonably talented young midfielders which would move us in the right direction towards improving our clearances. If one of the 3 becomes a centre square starter it will have been a successful trading period. It would be nice if another could slot into a back pocket.

It may also allow us to throw pick 10 at Hawthorn for Hay. So our spine doesn't suffer in the short term. Apparently Hawthorn feel that Hay is worth more than pick 13, though i would be inclined to first offer pick 13.

Keeping picks 9, 13 and 26 i think we would secure:

9: Swallow
13: Oakley-Nicholls
26: Rischbieth or Toovey

Gawd, we can't wait that long.

Just for the record. Rischbieth is seriously talented at distance running. 9:30 from an 18 year old is so quick and he could be the quickest over 3Km in the AFL. But AFL is predominantly a power sport, and that why we want quickness over 20m. I groaned inwardly when I heard Freo had spoken to him.

I see your points. Though we could fall into the trap of gap filling as opposed to drafting for improvement. God knows we've done it before. We won't be waiting a decade for improvement, just saying we can ensure strength in this area by drafting smartly. Our clearances will naturally improve next year. I'd like them to further improve over the following years. When some of the older heads start to slow and retire.

The reason i put rischbeth at 26 and Nicholls at 13 was for that very reason. It would be interesting to find out Rischbeth's times over 20m. Remember that the shuttle run is a series of 20m sprints which he did extremely well at. I don't think Rischbeth can be likened to an endurance runner. 3km is relatively close to a sprint in the scheme of things.

He could be very damaging and appear quite fast as obviously his speed is retained despite running long distances. Hence the 15.8 in the shuttle bepp test.

Its the initial burst of 5-10m that makes Judd better than the average midfielder. Where he can just burst away and break\avoid tackles from his opponents. Obviously you need hand and foot skills as well. But its the speed that Freo needs i.e. a player with similar bursts of extreme speed.

No player runs 3k's flat out in a continuous stretch, its bursts of 5-20m thats required.
