You continuously bombard your forward line quickly out of the middle and you are going to blitzkrieg the opposition. We don’t have those burst, grunt midfield players with penetrating kicks that put the fear of god into defenders anywhere near the quality of what we’ve seen from Melbourne in these finals.
Our mids are B grade cause of this reason, they Have poor skills. I can’t think of one that can hit up a leading target, except butters and Rosie.

Was bound to happen for Melbourne eventually. You can't stay bottom forever in a league designed to ensure you become a premiership threat. They ****ed up their previous era with disastrous drafting.

Pick 4 - Cale Morton. Peaked early, never developed, bust
Pick 14 - Jack Grimes. Injury bust
Pick 21 - Addam Maric. Talent Bust
Pick 1 - Jack Watts. Never developed, Bust
Pick 17 - Sam Blease. Talent Bust
Pick 19 - James Strauss. Talent Bust
Pick 1 - Tom Scully. Got vomited on by Max Gawn & left. Bust
Pick 2 - Jack Trengove. Injury bust
Pick 11 - Jordan Gysberts. Talent Bust
Pick 18 - Luke Tapscott. Talent Bust
Pick 12 - Lucas Cook. Massive Talent Bust
Pick 12 - Traded for Mitch Clark. Massive Bust
Pick 4 - Jimmy Toumpas - Injury bust
Pick 20 - Traded for Chris Dawes. Bust.

Thats an unprecedented amount of s**t drafting and s**t development with early picks.

The best thing they did wasn't get Roos in. It was making Jason Taylor their recruiting officer and making Josh Mahoney their football manager.

Pick 9 - Christian Salem. Hit
Pick 2 - Christian Petracca. Hit
Pick 3 - Angus Brayshaw. Hit
Pick 4 - Clayton Oliver. Took a risk and has been a huge hit
Pick 3 - Luke Jackson. Again, bit of a risk, huge hit
Pick 12 - Koz Pickett. Risk, huge hit

Along with a lot of late hits like Hunt, Harmes, Neal-Bullen, Fritsch, Petty, Rivers. Clever trading for guys like Langdon, they got Brown cheap, Lever & May a huge game changer down back compared to making a Prelim with Oscar McDonald and Sam Frost.

How do we compete? Become s**t. Get very early draft picks.

so What, did you see his first 20 mins in a prelim?
I couldn’t give a stuff if he wins 5 brownlows if he doesn’t show up

did you see vines first 3 contests.. absolutely smashed in

Bont, Treloar, Smith, Libba, Hunter, Macrae all shat the bed and barely touched it once Melbourne got their run on for that 15 minutes period in the third.

Nailed it. The problem is that the last thing management want is for us to bottom out. Which probably consigns us to being close but not close enough as we will never have the top end talent to compete with teams like Melbourne.

fu** you write some sh*t. One of our midfielders just won the brownlow ffs.

not sure what your saying, our blokes don’t turn up when it matters At the start of a game, at home against a side that had travelled.

Swap Steven Motlop (I'm assuming he's one of the players you're referring to) for Charlie Spargo last night and you think the Demons suddenly lose? Of course not.

Every premiership side in the history of the game has carried a few average footballers because their top end is so good. Ours isn't. There is no one player in our side who's incapable of being part of the bottom end of a premiership side, but we don't have a Gawn/Oliver/Petracca like midfield to carry them.

What nonsense. You aren't rating Boak (weird considering your posts in the not rating Boak thread?) and Wines? I get Lycett isn't top shelf, but I reckon you're hinting at this being beyond simply changing ruck.

I had to wait 37 years between flags you've only got another 22 to go. Don't worry the time goes in a flash (of rage, frustration and dissapointment).

Pfft, at least Richmond are big enough that everyone could share the joke.

Nobody cares about Port, we just wade away in mediocrity and Whitely says 'well done to Ken Hinkley for achieving a positive win loss ratio and guiding Ollie Wines to a brownlow!'

I'm picturing Byron Pickett making his way through the crowd. 🤣

Just think that only 2 years ago many Dees fans were disappointed in Petracca’s development as he sat in the forward lines and didn’t think he’d become that gun midfielder we see today.

Then he finally had the fitness and was moved into the midfield rotations before coming a full time mid and dominating games.

That’s what 2022 needs to be for us. Start transitioning Butters and Rozee into permanent midfield rotations and start to push their development. Who knows, in 2 years time it could then be one of them tearing games apart but we have to start now as it doesn’t happens over 1 off season.

Also, I think we can see from the Dees trades/FA compared to ours that we massively took the wrong approach. The Dees traded in for Key position players and drafted midfielders and other gaps. We traded for flankers and are left with a hole in terms of good key position players to build a side around (aside from Aliir).

Dees: May, Lever, Brown
Us: Fantasia, Rocky, Motlop

The Dees list management has been perfect and again just shows that a strong spine will win out.

To go top you need at least one AFL big time prototype player in the form of Petracca , Martin etc. Explosive, powerful clearance types hard to get unfortunately, but when drafting look for that build of player, is this years draftee version Goater. Could we move up into top 10. expected range 9 to 15
Josh Goater
Best position:
Utility
Height, weight:190cm, 79kg
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Projected draft range: 5-25
Plays like: Elliot Yeo
June ranking: Outside-20
Rationale: Goater has gotten better as the year has progressed and his performance in the Vic Metro vs. Vic Country trial made clear he's among the upper echelon of prospects this year. His versatility and capability to impact games across multiple different positions sets him apart from his peers.
Strengths:
Versatility to impact games through the midfield, in defence and up forward
Contested ball winning
Distribution by hand
Composure in traffic
Reading of the ball in flight
Overhead marking
Intercept marking
Leap
Burst of speed out of stoppages
Acceleration
Agility
Evasion
Work rate
Weaknesses:
Unclear best position
