Not going to lie - the Fox movie (dancing on thin ice) was pretty average

The way they presented the GWS final was absolutely bizarre - no focus on the gravity of the comeback, awful music choice etc.

Hate to say it but I agree, very average as far as documentaries go. sleepylion hands down the best.

Unfortunately I felt it was a flop of a production as well. It felt rushed, underwhelming and lacked polish. There were some really strong grabs (sound bites) but the whole structure and production felt cheap and poorly assembled. Pull it apart, put VO in there and find an editor who can choose a score that gives the memories some gravity.

Felt like me and my mate having a chat about it all after a few beers.

Underwhelming , on the cheap.

Haha yes. Tbh I’ve had goose bumps in the past with some of my mates recounting that grandfinal day over beers. How did FOX get it so wrong ?

It was disappointing after what emotions the tease editor managed to elicit, but who knows what the production team had to deal with in getting it made. I’ve been on the production side before, and things can go wrong very quickly if there isn’t a cohesive vision.

Hopefully the AFL house production “Pounding the Rock” has a better stab.

I’d recommend listening to Lachie’s interview on the latest Roar Deal pod. Great insights into last season and a perfect way to get ready for this year.

I was hoping for something new from the fox doco but if you’ve consumed all things lions over the summer it just felt like a repetition.

The Fox one was fine relative to the resources and time that was clearly provided by Fox to put it together.

The AFL one pipped it for the reasons expressed by Tom and the behind the scenes audio.

I thought the little snippets of Fages addressing the troops and Oscar , who really is one of nature's gentlemen, getting some air time really made you appreciate why we managed to pull it off.

Almost wanted to pull on the boots myself.

"Pound the Rock" was excellent. Lots of game footage and thoughtful, short answers to questions, which was combined with some new miked up footage. Would watch again.

Thought that "Dancing on thin ice" was OK but not that many real insights for Lions fans that have consumed every last piece of footage and interviews.

Both could have done with a graphic or two showing the ladder by round. Perhaps showing how the stats were similar (except for accuracy) between 2023 and 2024. I also thought thee were some cracking games (Dogs and Port especially) that weren't mentioned.

Now we know the exact audio of the Fages/Leigh moment on the siren:

"I've told you you were a premiership coach - now you've got a premiership team."

Appreciate the ongoing love, guys! I'm too jealous to watch these because I'm bitter thinking of all the things I could have done with that 4k game footage, behind the scenes footage and interviews:tired::tearsofjoy: Just kidding, it was my 25th birthday yesterday, so I was busy eating cake but I'm keen to watch both of them today.

One thing I'm glad about is that I focused my movie on the full decade before - I feel like it makes it unique to anything put out by Fox, AFL or the club and will keep my video relevant despite new premiership content. I hope so anyway lol

Yeh not real sure what the point of dancing on thin ice was. Seemed to be all about Brown. Ah Chee, Lohmann and Andrews said about 8 words between them. By the time the production finished dwelling about how bad a team we were, I wondered if they were actually going to show any good parts. They did, briefly. Wouldn’t have had much more than 2 minutes of actual chat about the finals games, although we did get to see Brown and Black in the grandstands just in case we didn’t get enough of Browny already.
Was all rushed, nothing new or exciting come of it, even the highlights with Ah Chee and Rayners goals which still give me tingles, barely anything.
Felt like they had to do it because that’s the rage these days after a GF win, but May as well not bothered.

Your doco was the best by a mile!

Happy birthday!

Totally agree with the above. Pounding the Rock slightly better, Dancing on Thin Ice totally underwhelming.

I was hoping that there might be a bit more footage from inside the rooms shown, or more of Fagan addressing the players. The parts I enjoyed most were his words - sitting on the bench talking to Harris, addressing the players at quarter time etc.

Maybe we are planning to make something of our own with an external media company and reserved a lot of that content to keep it fresh. At least that’s what I hope.

Edit: also agree wholeheartedly that @sleepylion’s version was superior to both - easily.

There will definitely be more Fages mic'd up for the GF content at some point - the AFL usually release that GF week. Funnily enough Longmire was mic'd up too but there were some 'technical difficulties' in the swans box so the audio was 'lost'.

A group sitting rows apart is an odd setup and the way Browny steered the conversation to what answer he wanted made it pretty average viewing. You need someone who asks the right questions to get good content. I think some of the montage videos that were on AFL 360 in the lead up to the grand final were better than that.
