are jealous!
Hi guys, sadly I will not be in Melbourne on Grand Final day as I'm off overseas on the 27th. As it happens I will be in New York on grand final day (or night as it will be there) and I'm looking for suggestions as to where to watch the Pies win another flag. I'm told that The Australian Bar in Manhattan is a good venue and will be chock full of Aussies. Does anybody here have any experience of this place or know of a good venue for watching the game? It will apparently be played at around 12:30am local time so it will have to be somewhere that will be open although that shouldn't be a problem in the city that never sleeps.

Over to you and thanks in advance. Go Pies!

Quick Google search confirmed The Australian on W 38th as the go to for AFL coverage with Aussies.

I'm a little jealous! I've been to NYC a few times and love the place. Always leave feeling like I've barely scratched its surface and can't wait to come back.

Have fun!

Thanks for that. I haven't seen much else that looks the goods and given that The Australian is about 3 minutes walk from my hotel I think that will probably be the place. Apparently the owner is a bit of an AFL tragic so it stands to reason.

I've never been to America before so this is a big trip for me and I have to admit to being pretty excited. Fortunately I'm traveling with a group of friends, some of whom have been before so I reckon I'll be in good company. We will stay in NY for a few days before we travel to Toronto and then on to Quebec to board a Cruise down the East coast and finishing at Fort Lauderdale. From there we will travel to LA for a few days and then on to Honolulu for another few days before returning home. The bank balance will take a nasty beating but I reckon if you're going that far from home there's not much point in a short stay.

I watched the 1st 2010 grand final there, was great. Big screen and good mix of people, remember a bloke wearing a white suit and matching cowboy hat jumping into my arms and hugging me at some point deep into the last quarter after a Pies goal, don’t remember much more after that! From memory there was another place in Soho that was an Aussie bar that would have been good. Maybe pop into a place called The Tuckshop on 1st and 1st and see what they suggest. Lived there 8 years ago so apologies if this is all wrong!

Thanks for the info. I'll follow up on that one.

Sounds like a good trip. I've mentioned somewhere else on this board that I'll be in Vancouver for a wedding the day before the gf. Bride is an Essendon supporter so had no concerns about booking a wedding so close to the gf, and at the start of the year I was a lot less optimistic about our teams chances, so booking flights was not as difficult. Being an mcc member, this will be the second gf I miss live since 02, which will be strange. But I'm assured Vancouver has some awesome spots for Aussie to watch and it will be on at a more sociable time of about 9.30.

I think New York would be awesome. Pack your scarf and hope we get there!

Do me one favour though... Make that your one and only interaction with "Aussie" stuff while in the US!

Are you doing any walking tours?

You're right. We don't plan to be doing anything "Aussie" other than that. We are looking at tours and activities at the moment. We will be making a list and hopefully making some decisions in the next week or so.

It's going to be a pretty awesome trip I think. The scarf is definitely coming along with me. Ever the optimist!

I know the place you are thinking of. Was there on my last night in New York having a quiet beer before flying out the next day. Not too far from Times Square from memory. Watched the Australian Open on a couple of screens and they were advertising Triple J hottest 100

Yep. That would probably be the place. Our hotel is right near Times Square and the Australian is about 3 minutes walk from there.

A slice of Brooklyn pizza tour was a bit of fun

I might have to look that one up but last time I went overseas and particularly on a cruise I came back about twice the man who left Melbourne. I'm only now getting back to a respectable weight. New York is going to be a challenge I reckon.

I love NY - last time there was last year for 2 weeks in June. You’ll have a great time, so much to see and do.
Loved going to baseball - saw both Yanks & Mets, great fun just zapping around on the subway, saw Book of Mormon with last minute tix, rode those share bikes everywhere (just be careful & never after drinking!), Brooklyn is great especially on a Sunday, The Met, the Guggenheim, going out on the harbour, caught the train to Philly for a day trip... and of course heaps of bars.
Let’s hope the Pies are in the Granny that would really make a great day!
Enjoy.

On my first morning there I took a double-decker bus tour. It was a rapid introduction to the city, one which helped me navigate myself around.

Hey! I moved to nyc about 18 months ago, feel free to PM me if you have any queries.

The Australian was doing some sort of special event; just check you might need to book to get a seat. It’s not a bad option

I don’t want to jinx anything by saying it out loud lol, but if I’m not invested in the game I was thinking of heading there myself.

It’ll be on cable (fox sports) so I think any sport bar could accommodate. There’s also the afl global pass app too.

I’m arriving in nyc afternoon of the grannie as well! Have a week there with my wife.
What a life you blokes lead. I was there 12 years ago on my
Honeymoon.

What are you up to over there? I went as a kid but don’t remember much so I’m super excited about this trip.

It’ll be a blast! Its so crazy, it’s even hard to describe. Let me know what you are thinking in terms of your trip and I can try give some local tips.

I work in finance and our head office is in nyc (midtown). It’s a crazy busy place!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking I will look into booking too. I expect Aussies will come from miles around.

Cool. Hope we make the Granny and you manage to see the game. We get there a day earlier so hopefully we will have recovered enough from the trip.
