First of all welldone to Essendon. They were the better side all year and deserved the Premiership. What did people think of the umpiring? I thought it was woeful. Those umpires should never umpire again let alone umpire a Grand Final. Many have said how much Melbourne were disadvantaged and I totally agree. It certainly would not have made a difference to the result, we simply were not good enough, but you would like to see the umpiring standard be a lot beeter than that on the biggest day of the year.

Have to agree. A certain Mr. Goldspink was probably the worst of them. How come Brian Sheehan, the most experienced GF umpire was left out of the main three. While the majority of the dodgy decisions favoured ess, I must say that they must go back to the drawing board on what is classified as holding the ball. Shocking inconsistency!

Gee you both had 21 free kicks each Melb had 4 from freekicks , Ess 1 and did you see the wizzers free kicks (talk about logies).... Stop bloody whinging and do it next year..face it wouldn't have made a difference if you had 9 more goals from free kicks be happy with nearly 50% from us

Dan, I don't think there is any need to be like that.

At no stage did Dees blame the umpires for the loss and seemed to be very dignified in defeat.

From another neutral observers perspective, the umpiring, particularly Goldspink, was shocking.

Holding the balls, throws, boundary umpring decisions, etc

Anyone who suggests that the umpiring cost Melbourne the match is a fool. However Melbourne were the definitely on the wrong end of a lot of decisions and he/she has every right to say that without being thought of as a sore loser.

The umpiring was woeful and far below the expectations of a professional sport in a Grand Final.

The umpiring fraternity will never please all spectators, but will go a long way if they are consistent with their interpretations of the rules - holding the ball - one that springs to mind.

If a free-kick in front of gaols is there, pay the free, but be consistent to both teams.

Melbourne was never going to win the GF, but disgraceful umpiring didn't help their cause.

PS Thug Long - the Sunday Herald-Sun stated Long was reported for rough play????
Should get off on a technicality. Essendon spruike about role models.

I would also like to see the vision of hit-man Wallis throwing a punch at the Melbourne player's neck!!!! If he retires this year, but is found guilty by the tribunal, what would be the penalty - a stern warning from the tribunal!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep

From where I sat (great seats - forward pocket - Northern Stand) the umpiring was woeful. We got lucky with a few holding the balls and Hird doing a Carlton 1979 Harmes effort and Melbourne had 3 out of 4 soft free kicks dead in front resulting in goals.

That said, Hird and Barnard both got blatant pushes in the back dead in front ignored and I sure the dees suffered similarly (just can't remember)

Fact is, who give a toss? We should have kicked straight and beaten the GF winning margin...

Lucas 0 for 4
Blumfield 3 behinds?
Long 1 from 4 (dead set sitters)

Count your lucky stars dee fans - it could have been an absolute shellacking...

yeah those ten goals we got from free kicks really won us the game
the umpiring was bad but it was bad both ways, i would tell you to watch the game again but it would break your tiny little melbourne heart so ill watch it for you

well put dan

jeas dees i really thought you would be in the range rover heading back up to bulla by now

I am sticking up for Dees 01. I am a Melbourne supporter and yes, from a Melbourne supporter's perspective, the umpiring was very ordinary. I totally admit it had absoloutly no influence on the result. We were very ordinary on Saturday. But their seemed to be no consistency with holding the ball and also some of the handball Essendon did were very interesting. Also there were a few boundary line decisions that perplexed me. I am certain there will be decisions that went against Essendon that would upset the supporters just as much as some upset me but I am only commenting on the Melbourne side of things. Also, great to see some "originality" in the classification of Melbourne supporters.

Well I can't remember a lot of the decisons, but the Mercuri handball/throw, and the Hird kick form the boundary stick in my mind.

There were a lot of tackles where the ball could've been thrown out. There is a case in Grand Finals in letting it go, and allowing them to play footy, and I think that's what Hayden Kennedy said on Friday. He said that they would only pay the free kicks that were there, and not look for silly free kicks. Then again, you don't want the game to get ugly, with packs and stuff. It all comes down to interpretation, but that Mercuri 'handball' was definitely a throw.

Usually I don't rely on camera angles to make my own judgment on whether a ball is out of bounds or not, but that slow-mo shot of Hird with the ball showed that the ball was probably out. The boundary umpire was a long way behind the play, and the goal umpire certainly couldnt help him. I think it is about time that there were 4 boundary umpires in the AFL. If anyone watched the Legends game last Tuesday, they used 4 boundary umps in that match effectively, with an umpire in a 'quadrant' on the ground.
