On PS2 the right stick just jumps into a first person view rather than camera control (on foot).

Pretty sure it was L1 that centred the camera behind you

I just tried the classic settings on pc which make it the same as PS2 (goes in to first person view with right stick).

But in first person view up is still down and down is still up. Is it the same on PS2?

Oh now I get you. Go and look for an 'invert' option in the menu.

There is no invert, only for San Andreas.

Does the PS2 have it for GTA III/Vice City?
