Bircahll is a better kick (he is up > 80% in effective kicks and his accuracy in kicking 50/60 metres is exceptional) and is more of a natural running ball carrier but McLean is definately ahead in pack situations in getting the pill/clearances. Hawks have many players in McLeans mould in getting the pill (Mithchell, Hodge, Lewis, Sewell) so Birchall is a better player and is better suited for Hawthorn's structure but McLean is definately a better player than Birchall for Melbourne purposes. It all comes down to what your club has and what it needs.
