I thought that micky totally outcoached sheedy yesterday. We were getting smashed in the first half of the first quarter, but mick made some solid moves (Fraser into ruck, burnsy into middle and playing heater in front of lloyd and lucas and told the forwards to move closer to the middle to clog up the corridor) and we stopped the goal rush. Mick is a genius and the work he does to make our team competetive each and every week proves he is in the top bracket of afl coaches.

I was amazed at the selected team Essendon put forth......to me they seemed very top heavy. Given the short turn around times, the ANZAC day occassion and the injuries both teams had carried.....it was a fair assumption to think the ball would be seeing a lot of the turf.

In light of this, why did Essendon pick so many talls in Lloyd, Lucas, Bolton, Ryder, Laycock, Fletcher, Michael, Bradley and Johns?

A medium sized player like McPhee (roughly James Clements size) could have been a KPP for Essendon given Collingwoods line-up with Essendon picking more running players.

Mick choosing a team more suited to the expected game conditions rather than the weather seemed to be his best move of the day.

It was a pretty inspired move putting Harry O onto Lucas. I was sure Lucas would carve him up but Harry did a great job on one of the form players in the league.

Plaudits have to go to MM for taking the punt on a young fella which came off beautifully and went a long way to helping us win the game.

Dead right, freed up Heater and Presti who at this stage have better footy heads and ended up hurting Essendon upfield (esp Heater). Could see by the end of the 1st quarter they had settled. Very much due to Harry holding a KPP. Amazing how that one young fella doing a good job can release options in so many other positions, he didn't even have to star, just keep the bloke honest.

Yeah MM deserves a lot of credit. Before the first bounce I was amazed that Harry went to Lucas, if anything I would have thought Maxwell might have been given the job. I also thought that Presti should have been on Lloyd, Clement onto Lucas. Credit to MM he got the match ups right, it paid off. I was really pleasep to also see Trav get a good run up the ground playing as an old fashioned Tarrant leading up the MCG wings. Just his skills and decision making let him down yesterday.

I think with the pressure we constantly put the Bombers under it made it very difficult for their forwards to get easy possessions. Our midfield hasn't beaten many this year despite our 3-2 record but against the Bombers we certainly had the better of it.

Can't see the genius thought the matchups were obvious - except Harry on Lucas - he probably would have gone with Maxwell except that he was carved up previously.

Reckon the H OB MATCH UP WAS Bluey rather than MALTY - WHATEVER - MM will take all the credit - always does.

Finally played Jimmy on LLoyd as I suggested on this board - thank GOD.

Only a Hamstring dropped Licca - and he was forced to flick Richards.

Should have played Cox in rd 1.

MM had a good game plan for the circumstances and Sheedy didn’t have the players to counter it. I wouldn’t be critical of Sheedy but MM did a very good job with his players and the players did a brilliant job with their instructions. Still my choice for 2008.

There was a point I thought Harry O' was going to be put the wolves, and Lucas would begin to dominate. And I have faith in the kid.

But Malthouse held his nerve... that was a match winning decision (one of many) and I was impressed by that. Sheedy doesn't get out-coached often, but Anzac Day was one of the few :).

Am I right in that it appears that MM is letting some players settle in a position and try and play some consistent footy in one place? Some people have been critical of this. Admittedly I'am not the greatest interpreter of coaching, but it really seems to be paying off this year more so than in the past. Some has certainly been young players delivering, some has been crap opposition, but lets face it WC only just got home and Port didn't murder anyone. How much difference has a box full of premiership players made. How much difference has Buckley and Didak being out made with the blooding of young men? A really positive start to this year, with some real depth on the horizon. After all the BS about coaches like Wallace and Eade building depth we finally see a glimpse of the real deal at CFC.
