Chardonnay, I appreciate where you are coming from. Certainly Nicholls is known nationally moreso for his work beyond his immediate playing days. Nonetheless I hope his story from a footy point of view will never be passed over for the feats of modern players who comparatively have had greater opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. I wonder how he is perceived by the indigenous players in the game today.

With you 100% Roys.

The aboriginal footballers that played the game pre the AFL are overlooked by many. Almost like denying the role in Aussie Rules historically can mask the VFLs demonstrable anti indigenous history.

How many Victorians have unknowingly walked past the statue of the truly great man & his wife?

B: Gavin Wanganeen (VC), Darryl White, Chris Johnson.
HB: Andrew McLeod, Adam Goodes, Byron Pickett.
C: Peter Matera, Maurice Rioli (C), Michael Long.
HF: Nicky Winmar, Stephen Michael, Syd Jackson.
F: Michael O'Loughlin, Lance Franklin, Jim Krakouer.
R: Graham Farmer, Barry Cable, Aaron Davey.
I/C: Paddy Ryder, Peter Burgoyne, Michael McLean, Cyril Rioli.
EMG: Derek Kickett, Phil Krakouer, Phil Matera

No way Paddy Ryder gets in (let alone a guernsey) before Phil Krakouer (148 g/231 g) who would be more instrumental in setting up goals. Saw the best of the Krakouer Bros and even Adrian McAdam (36/92) is more reliable (DEADLY) near goal than what Paddy Ryder (63/15) has offered/ will ever offer.

Jim Krakouer (147g/236g) was much more of a true rover than what Davey (108/133) is/ ever will be although I appreciate Davey's input. Johncock very stiff to miss out. I'd prefer Johncock over Derek Kickett actually. Cyril Rioli hasn't played enough football to be ranked 'greatest status' already IMHO.

Special mention to Winston Abraham (110 games/ 150 goals) and Jeff Farmer (249/ 483 goals)

And Peter Matera way, way, way before Peter Burgoyne.

Of course, if I read carefully, I would've realised that was the case. I'd think about a few others before P Burgoyne - Johncock or the Wiz easily.

Peter Burgoyne: 240 games/190 goals

He was a prolific forward pocket then frontline onballer in a team that won three consecutive minor Premierships and eventually a flag - his performance in which has many believing he was stiff not to take the Norm Smith ahead of Pickett.

Then, in the twilight of his career he went to a half back flank and racked up 600+ possessions in 2007 alone.

He's in every day of the week over Johncock. The Wiz is irrelevant given his perma-FP status.

The Wiz: too young to remember his Melbourne days, clearly you are
OR
suffer brain fade @ an extraordinary level.

I'd rate Peter Burgoyne at his best below the Wiz on individual brilliance, with Stiffy one out, one back.

Magicians ALL !!

He played up the ground for periods in his younger days (who could forget his GOTY @ Waverley running almost the length of the ground back in the day) but he never had the tank to be full time onball and was never close to being a prolific ballwinner for his size and ability.

In terms of his eligibility for any alltime Indigenous team, I'm almost certain 99.9% of judges would consider him for a forward pocket and a forward pocket only.
