I'm very amused about posts about great duds from the past (and before my Dogs/AFL supporting time).

Jackovich's name keeps on popping up too - what's his story?

Now your really starting to sh*t me Dry Rot. You can't mention names like Sedat Sir and Allen Jakovich at the Bulldogs without getting peoples blood boiling. Your invitation to Melbourne is in jeopardy!

A few words for Allen Jakovich:
Brainless, overweight, big headed.

In his first Ansett Cup game for us he smashed Guy McKenna. His defence was he saw the 7 on McKenna's junper and thought it was his brother! He got 3 weeks.

He was fat and stupid and we took him first round.

There's two large gentlemen in blue uniforms here asking for Mr. Jakovich.

he was actually one of my favorite players when he was at Melbourne. He brought a lot of excitement and flair to football with his antics and played some fantastic footy.

Unfortunately he couldn't deliver that for us. I actually blame our footy dept for recruiting him. I would have been excited had it been when he was at his prime. But I wasn't because everyone knew he had chronic back problems at the time and was never going to be a good player again when he came to us.

From experience, i'd say the back problems were caused by his large protruding stomach :p

1995 was a dud draft, so going for Jacko was at the least worth considering.
We actually traded our way up the draft to get the selection before Collingwood who were primed to get him

Jakovich was easily our greatest dud pick up of the nineties for all the reasons already mentioned. He was a great player at Melbourne, rubbish with us. I actually started feeling sorry for him when our supporters at the Geelong Rd end started chanting "gutbusters, gutbusters" at him one match day in 1996 (I think we were playing Brisbane). The name Allen Jakovich sums up 1996 for me really. :(

Didn't we also re-draft Tony Campbell in 1995 or did I just dream that one up:confused:

We drafted Jacko, Curley, MWest and redrafted Campbell as well as trading for Reimers and Wira

As I understand it he broke his leg before the start of the season which didn't help.....

But Jakovich is a great example of a dud, promising lots but delivering nothing [tho I hear he had a big game in the ressies one day].

Can we drop the subject now? I'm getting a little nervous.

A little earlier than this I think we selected a player Paul Gow (?) . I 'm pretty sure he was our first round draft pick and returned the grand total of 5 games, which puts him ahead of Jackovich and Reimers. What were our recruiting guys on in those days?

He was the 8th selection in 1990 and played 7 games.
Tried to rough Dermie up in a night game and gave away a heap of free kicks

In those days the recruiting guys went on just reports in the paper and a little scouting here and there. They may have seen these players only once or twice before selecting them.

The interstate players would often get advanced warning that a club was sending someone to watch them and would fake an injury so as not to wreck their reputation.
Dennis Reppacholi (1989) was an example of a hugely overrated player that was drafted sight unseen because he was considered a tall up and coming defender.
