c. M.Long D.Kickett L.Baker
hf. J.Hird P.VanDerHar M.Mercuri
f. P.Salmon M.Lloyd D.Bewick
fol. S.Madden G.ODonnell T.Watson
int. B.Duckworth D.Grenvold R.Merrett
S.Denham

Just thought I'd wander in and check out what was happening at e-Windy Hill! Walshy, who would you have as captain and vice captain? You'd have at least five candidates for the captaincy in your side.

By the way, do you have any news on any new injury with Ricky Olaranshaw? Someone on the North website reckons he's injured again. I just want to see him fit and firing so that he can prove the boo-boys wrong.

Cheers

cant split hird, daniher or thompson
they were all great captains, even garry odonnel was great

as for ricky i havent heard from him in a while but last time we spoke he was over the moon about his fitness, it was far better than expected, ill try giving him a call tomorrow and ill let ya know

Not bad Walshy. I'd have a few different to you though. Reckon I'd have Daisy Williams ahead of Dehnam and Merv Neagle ahead of Grenvold. Id also start Merret at C.H.F ahead of Vander...his presence would be important to the rest of the forward line and he could also play as well.

No Neagle? Bit shocked at that Walshy.

Okay heres one from an 'outsiders' viewpoint, the best team that i could put together that ive seen for your mob. like you stated this is only on what ive seen, so sorry Dan, no Coleman.

Thompson, Weston, Wanganeen

Harvey T.Daniher N.Daniher

M.Neagle Baker Long

Hird Merrett Vanders

Moss Salmon (forget Lloyd, he couldnt touch Fish before the knee) Bewick

Madden Watson Williams

O'Donnell, Mercuri, Lloyd *well i wasnt going to leave him out of the side completly*, K.Fletcher (well i reckon he was a fair player and Dustins still got a long way to go to catch the old mans playing tally.

Anyway i reckon its not a bad side, cant touch the Hawks of course

Right back at cha... (70's onward hawkers..)

O'Halloran Langford little Blonde guy (name escapes me... sorry - but you know who I mean)
Croad Mew Greene
Diper Wallace Eade
Knights Brereton Buckenara
Jarman Dunstall Peter Hudson (can't leave him out)

Salmon (! better than Scott and Paton put together) L.Matthews Crawford (but not this year)

Int: Kennedy; Schwab; Scott; Loveridge;

As for the Don's Grendel you're inclusion of TD and ND is spot on but ND HAS to be at CHB - best I've ever seen there.

My team: (75-2000)

Wanganeen D.Fletcher Thompson
Hardwick N.Daniher Harvey
Neagle L.Baker Long
Mercuri Merrett T.Daniher
Bewick Lloyd P.Salmon (changing in ruck)

Madden, Hird, Watson (can you imagine it?)
Int: Vanderhaar, Weston, Williams, O'Donnell;

Apologies: Moss, Ken Fletcher, Billy Duckworth and bloke like Ezard, Buhagiar and of course....the legend... Maxwell Crow.

But give Caracella, the Johnstons, Blumfield, Solomon and Ramanauskas a few years and who knows?

Thoughts Grendel - bet I forgot heaps of people - pretty hard over here in England in the middle of October...

That's the reason I am not even going to try to pick the best, it is just too hard. I can't believe that Nobby Clarke didn't rate a mention, I know someone said Daisy Williams & how about Walshy. Like I said it's too hard, mo matter who you select you will always leave someone out.

How could I have forgotten the great no.10 from the 80's, Lol.
I remember when the final siren sounded in 84 & 85, fouldsy had the ball. Sheedy later commented that Fouldsy could be sitting in the sh%#house and would still end up with the ball.. Heh Heh

How goes it guys, sheeez I’m away sick for a few days and the furniture’s been changed. At least the locks weren’t changed though, not even in the Roos camp. Thanks Rooboy it’s nice to be “woved”
biggrin.gif
.

Now about the topic, I’m about ‘80 – ‘00 so here goes:
Backs -
Foulds ('cos this guy never put a foot wrong not even in the dark period of ’87 shoooooperb player)
Fletch/Weston (very hard to choose between these guys, both unbeatable in their prime. Fletch should edge ahead in the next couple of years, due to longevity).
Wanga (shit he WAS good)
Half Backs –
Harvey (if only for his laser passes from one 50 to the other, let alone his pure guts).
I’d put Neil here but never saw much of him, living in the bush as a youngster, so Terry it will be.
Bomber Thompson (solid as a rock, great skills and toughness)
Centres –
Long “the Great” (I just love it every time this guy gets the ball, or even touches it. To think in ’94 I thought we could get by without him, what a dick.)
Leeeeon (genius, the guy was electric)
Merv Neagle (top class with great skills)
Half Forwards –
Mercuri (man if Quinny was at the club earlier he could have won a brownlow. Skills with a capital S. Maintain he’d make a great soccer player.)
Merrett (Loved this guy, still good beyond 30, tough as nails, intimidating, top skills and mobility for a big lug. Would have won in ’90 with him.)
Hird (can play anywhere he likes really, PURE CLASS, pound for pound best I’ve ever seen.)
Forwards –
Vanders (what a mark. just think what could have been if he had went off the piss.)
Lloyd (Will become a club great, forget what the detractors say, always stands up when it counts and is no pretty boy.)
Bewick (true great forward pocket, for his size, just devastating. Who could forget his ’93 finals series?)
Rucks –
Madden (best ruckman ever IMHO, who else could kick like him?)
Watson (explosive power and sublime skill, would like to see him back at the club.)
O’Donnell (in his prime this guy was sensational, check out ’93 highlights to remind yourself, great on field communicator too.)

Inter: Kickett (Would have edged out Vanders but for team balance, unbelievable skills, remember how good he was at Sydney too.)
Misiti – (great ball getter and getting out of a pressure situation)
Ezard (pure pace, he was super quick and great skills kicking and marking)
Wellman (this guy has been a revelation, he is a superb player.)

Apologies – Daisy, Grenvold, Nobby, Salmon (sort of), Glen Hawker and Budgie (Christ you’d think I could get the two guys I had on the back of my jumper on the team, 33 and 20. Fitting Carra has got 33 now.)

Cheers.

PS - Grendel, if you could be bothered reading through my pro Essendon post, how much does it piss you off that SOS got the fullback guernsey for team of the century and not Langford? He was robbed I reckon.

Ricey sorry but im not sure which thread you mean, anyway i havent seen it yet (but will no doubt stumble over it sometime).

Just on the Langers/SOS bit, to me Langers everytime the only bloke he couldnt handle (who could?) was Lockett. Even so i still reckon the best fullback ive seen (this hurts to admit) is Southby, just ahead of Dench. So there you have it and how many blues have said the same thing. Like everyone else the only thing that really pisses me of with Silvangi is the HOLDING. You see it, I see it, everyone in the crowd or watching the tv (commentators excluded) sees it. HOW COME THE BLOODY UMPIRES DONT!!!
hehe

ps on Madden best ruck ive seen too, but Dear did used to break even with him, and Dempsey (the other best ruck ive seen) used to beat him (though hes the only one that could say it)! Cheers.

Sorry Grendel I probably worded it wrong I just meant all my thoughts on the Best Dons side I saw and quotes like Merrett "would've won it for us in '90". Which is poosible, certainly not provable
biggrin.gif
.

I just think Langford's long term excellence, exceeds SOS's and I don't ever remember him making the God awful mistakes SOS is prone to doing. As much as I respect him as an undoubted champ, I've seen him cost his team more than once, victory with his stuff ups. In regard to his grabbing, I think it was Arch who christened him "Scragvagni"
biggrin.gif
, sums it up really. Never saw much of Southby or Dench so can't comment on their careers, but must have been great. You could put one K. Moore in the great class too.

On Madden, the thing that makes him stand out for me is his kicking for goal (which was far more efficient than "yippedy yipp" Salmons) better than any big guy I've seen. His leap was superb and round the ground marking was great. I saw him beaten in the ruck duals too, most noteably by his brother, but his alround skills were better than any I've seen. Too think his replacement was that all-time dudd Somerville, brought new meaning to the term "opposite ends of the spectrum". Thank Christ for Barnsey.

Cheers.
