In light of the greatest player thread, I thought this would be a good conversation piece too.
There are three obvious choices
- United 99/00
- Arsenal 03/04, The Invincibles
- Chelsea 04/05 Most points, least goals conceded
So, which is it for you?
Each side has strong arguments to present its case.
United won the league in a canter. Nobody got close and Arsenal finished second on 73 points. Scored 97 goals (24 more than the next closest in Arsenal on 73)
The Arsenal side had pace, flair, flash, ruthlessness going forward, quality all over the park, and of course, they went the season undefeated - 26 wins, 12 draws.
Mourinho's Chelsea had a watertight defence only conceding (15), most clean sheets kept in a season (25), most wins in a season (29), most consecutive away wins (9), and the most points in a season (95). Looking at those numbers, it's hard to look past them too.
Looking at all that, it's hard to look past Jose's Chelsea. But there is something about going undefeated in a season which says something. That Chelsea side were excellent, but they didn't go undefeated, something which is practically unheard of.
