Opinion Greatest Single Game.

according to name a game, they do have most of these games but they are missing a quarter or 10 or so minutes for example, so they can't exactly sell them if it's not the entire feature.
That Ablett highlights tape which circulated in the mid 90's eventually got converted to DVD and made it's way onto the internet.
I heard a Cats fan paid thousands of $$$ to have a collection of Gazza's greatest moments put into a single highlights package and I made inquiries myself many years ago and they said they can do so but it will cost a lot of money....if I remember correctly, estimated around $4000-$5000 to have a highlights package put together as it's obviously very time consuming and does cost a bit of money to convert the original 8mm reels (or one of those type) across to discs.
You must be getting close...

Hey all.
I was chatting with a mate of mine (non-cat supporter) and we started talking about the Greatest games we had seen by a player. He used Buddys 13 as an example and we both agreed on a few Ablett Snr games as right up there but then I went with what I considered number 1, Steve Johnson vs Melb in 2011.
He thought I was smoking some serious drugs until I showed him the stats/highlights of the game and by the end I had him convinced that SJs game was the best we had seen.
For those who cant remember his stats were: 34 touches, 7 goals and something like 21 score involvements and 11 direct score assists. For me it was the best because not only was he scoring goals but his disposals were polished and brought other players into the game, it had the freaky plays, it had the great marks, it had the harder stuff like tackles and I doubt any of his 34 touches were wasted. Quite simply the best game I've seen just edging out a few others.

Anyone else have any examples?

Edit: For those wanting a better example, here is a fantastic youtube vid.

On this board at the time everyone was going on about how fantastic his performance was. Seems to have been forgotten a little bit.

Thank you for bringing it back up. Also thank you to that amazing guy who uploaded such a fantastic video ;)

Barry Stoneham played one of the all time great Mr FIXIT games ever seen v Dogs, 1992 finals.
Played FF, CHF, Ruck, CHB, FB, just anywhere needed, and got us up nearly single-handedly.

Does anybody else recall this or have any vision?

definitely recall this game Veedubs; Bulldogs were well on top until Stoneham was moved into the ruck, and his influence was instant and so pronounced that we quickly turned it around and got on top before dealing out a decent thrashing.

would be interested in seeing some footage myself; I recall Ablett was back after being injured for a couple of weeks and I remember him slotting a 55m goal on his left boot, then kicking a similar one on his right not long after - I think Brownless was among the goals that day too (and recall Danny Del Re giving us trouble early in the match !).

very good nomination !

may have been 91 you are referring to, it was the qualifying final of 92 where Geelong were down by 6 goals with 10 minutes remaining in the 1st half, Ablett Buddha and a few others totally flipped the game on it's head in the 2nd half and they ran away by 10 goals.

Amazing to think a deficit of 6 goals nearing halftime and to win by that amount kind of highlighted Geelong's style of game in that era.

this was the game; 1992 QF.

Stoneham is credited with 19 disposals and 11 hit outs, which shows that mere stats rarely show the full story - he was the difference that day; once he established himself in the ruck the goals from Brownless, Ablett and co. started to flow ...

Stat breakdown?
Still seems like alot of selfish disposals as a "numbers hunter" and very little to actually help the team.
Funny thing about that game is along with Swan's 49 disposals, Beams had 34 disposals 4 goals 1 behind, Pendlefairy had 34 disposals 11 tackles and Jolly had 38 hitouts yet the Pies still lost by 47 points.

Selwood's game against Fremantle on Anzac Day in 2008 would be right up there. He single-handedly dragged us back into that game with some of his clearance work in the middle. Was awesome stuff considering he was only 19 at the time.

Definitely up there. He dominated the 2009 Bartel point after the siren game against Hawthorn, as well.

Scarlett in 2005 vs Adelaide at Geelong. 30 possessions and 18 marks on Scott Welsh. We hung on won 3 points
22 kicks, 8 handballs, 14 marks. He got 2 votes that day. The three? Nathan Bassett with 9 kicks, 10 handballs and 4 marks without a tackle, goal or point to his name. I know stats don't tell the whole story but seriously. It's remarkable how often an opposition player gets the three votes in a game that we win where their influence doesn't appear to be terribly significant. Pretty sure Goodes got three against us in Geelong when we won and he had about 14 touches.

His last goal is so good.

Not a great week to be reminded about how lethal and skilled SJ can be.

If there was one Geelong game i could watch -which i have never seen -would be the 2nd half -in particular the 3rd qtr of the 1967 Preliminary Final against Carlton . Five goals down at half time -8 goal to 1 3rd qtr -Sharrock runs riot .

That would be exciting watching that
Sharrock was the Stevie J of his day, one of the most under rated Geelong players of all time and finished at age 24!

Close. He got 2 votes in that game for 14 touches, 5 hitouts and 0.5 on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, you had Bartel with 27 touches, 10 tackles and 2 goals, and Steve Johnson with 22 touches and 4 goals who didn't even get a vote. For those interested, the other vote getters were Gaz with 3 for his 35 touches and 3 goals, and Selwood got 1 vote for his 20 touches and 0.3 on the scoreboard.

Yep. Nothing against Goodes personally but Christ he gets looked after sometimes. Like Sheahan once wrote about the year Matera nearly won the Brownlow "they must like the way he runs". Not sure who out of Golden Balls (Judd) and Goodes deserved their second Brownlow less.

THE most over hyped game I've ever seen.
I watch the game and he had so little impact on the game considering the amount of ball he got, it was a weird game.

Not sure about that. I've never understood, ever, how a top player gets criticised for starring in a losing team. It's hardly Ablett's fault they were outclassed all over the field. And I do think anyone who criticises his one-two handballs has a very selective memory, as Thompson clearly stated it as an objective from the start of 2007. For three years no one had a problem with it, while Ablett's stats got bigger and bigger. Suddenly when he wasn't popular it became selfish. It's rubbish.

His job is to get the ball, and he's phenomenal at it. He couldn't have done much more that night and it's doing him a huge disservice to insinuate because they got hammered he was useless or something. How about getting his 21 teammates to do a bit better - they're all superstars aren't they?

He might be greedy for money, he might be loyal only to his wallet (as probably most footballers are anyway), but on the field he's a complete professional. I might not like him now but it doesn't stop him still being clearly the best player around.

Was at both the prelim and the 89 game against Collingwood. They were very special games that will live with me forever. The 93 game against Essendon would be the other one. That game was phenomenal considering Essendon were all over us that day. I was also at the Richmond 89 game, although can remember very little from it. Really wish that game was on video.

My top 5 Gary Ablett senior games:

1. 1989 Preliminary Final.
2. 1989 Home and away vs Collingwood.
3. 1993 Home and away vs Essendon.
4. 1989 Grand Final.
5. 1989 First Semi-Final vs Melbourne.

If I stop and think I could add another 5 without too much difficulty.

Bartletts 1980 final series for Richmond -including 8 goals against us in the 2nd Semi out at Waverly .

To go from a great rover -moved to a half forward flank in his 30s-and basically tear opposition backlines apart.

Quick -clever -every time he touched the ball -you knew there was trouble

They got a decent return in 1980 - 84 goals from Bartlett and 112 from Roach. Useful contributions. I think Cloke kicked over 50 too.

Wouldn't say single-handedly VD. Played a terrific game, but Brownless kicked 9 and Ablett landed a few as well. Amazing turnaround - 6 goals down and won by 11. I think Danny Del-Re kicked 8 for the Dogs too.

Wonderful thing time. I look at those stats and seriously can't recall all those Brownless goals, all I can recall is walking out after the game talking about Stoneham's efforts.Obviously, the team rallied and had a superb win.

I recall another amazing Bulldogs final, 1995, no Gazza, in fact he was sitting directly behind us, Brownless went beserk, and we killed them. Have we lost many finals v Dogs? I can only recall one, when I think Goggin was coaching Dogs, but I'm really stretching the neuronal scar tissue now.

I'll upload some games over the coming weeks, great thread topic imo :thumbsu:
