For me itd have to be Chris Cunningham, the man (amongst other things) behind Aphex Twins 'Come To Daddy' and 'Windowlicker' videos. Truly creepy and truly original. I just wish he would hurry up and do a feature film already.

Another contender would be Michel Gondry who has done Massive Attacks 'Protection, Bjorks 'Army Of Me' and The White Stripes 'Fell In Love With a Girl'.

And you cant go past Spike Jonze the director of such clips as Weezers 'Buddy Holly' and Fatboy Slims 'Praise You'.

Or there is Mark Romanek the director of Nine Inch Nails 'Closer' Video.

So who is your favourite video director and why?

Caught 'Rage' the other night when it was showing a lot of 80s film clips.

Couldn't help but notice that the 80s clips were so much more adventurous, bolder than a lot of today's clips, driven by creativity rather than flashy cutting.

Simple, well-executed ideas.

Spike Jonze for me. Apart from the ones already mentioned in this thread I love the clip for Weapon of Choice.

yeah, a great director.

On a sidenote, I remember Daryl Somers had Mulcahy on one night in the 1980s when Hey Hey was on (how old am I? :( ), and Russell was promoting Razorback, which was being released soon after. (For those of you who don't understand, Mulchahy was then best known for his music video work).

I think Molly Meldrum was on the panel, and John Blackman was in the booth upstairs, providing the voice of Dicky Knee. Whilst showing footage of the giant pig rampaging through an isolated farmhouse (think Jaws in the outback except with a half-tonne wild boar), Blackman, in Dicky Knee voice started making pig squealing noises, and then crying out:

"The Pig, The Pig, ....... The Pig's got my baby! ......

This was about the time of Lindy Chamberlain's incarceration, so it was very, very black humour. Somers, Mulchay, Meldrum and the whole crew were wetting themselves with laughter, and Somers couldn't speak for some time.

You had to be there ....+
