I can't imagine Griff being squeezed back to East Freo. I'd like him to take Keps spot down forward when Sandi's back. Heck, i'd even love him to take Kep's spot if we could slot Zac Clarke into the main ruck role, everyone know's Clarke's a better ruck than forward and he'd be given the license to run all day if played on the ball in the ruck.

So consider the following... Griffin starts in the ruck against the opposition's lead ruckman(Max Bailey, Mumford or Darren Jolly for example). Griff wins his fair share of hitouts and competes well around the ground taking a few marks, etc.

Then, at the 15 minute mark of the first quarter after a goal, the opposition lead ruckman (Bailey, Mumford or Jolly) head to the forward line for a rest while their backup (Roughead, Mike Pyke or Q-Stick) lines up for the bounce. In steps Freo's backup ruckman Aaron Sandilands...

I can see us kicking a few goals from clearances with the Sandi /Griff combo.

Indeed. It should also extend Sandi's career to an extent.

Adelaide were very nice to us. Griff wanted to go back home as his old man was sick (I think). Adelaide let him go to us for a 3rd round pick as they wanted to make sure Griff could go.

Don't think they were at all happy with the pick that they got, but they wanted to do the right thing by him. Kind of like what happened with Roberton, except we got diddly there.

Was still pretty classy of Adelaide to do it though.
Not classy, par for the course. We did it with Roberton and every club is expected to do it. You'd be sub-West Coast if you didn't let a bloke go home: football is irrelevant in comparison to family issues. Especially when you're dealing with fringe players.

Rossco, in his presser, just said Griff could've left last year. Interesting. A few clubs were after him, so he says. Made me smile a bit when Lyon said "no one's happier than Jon – but I'm not far behind him."

Still prefer Sandi as number 1. His height offers that get out of jail kick that Griff doesn't. They both need to be in the team when 211 comes back though.

Yes but he also stated he wanted to come home from memory and he was a Dockers support from his youth so for once we got the benefit of the desire to go home.

IIRC his old man was ill and he wanted to come home to be closer to him.

And that was because of the magnanimousness of the Adelaide Football Club.
That should never be forgotten.
They are a great club because of their treatment of Jon.

True and from memory, a majority of their supporters on here were very gracious about it too. Good lesson for Hawks fans for later on this year methinks. ;)

We're also a far stronger in terms of clearances with Sandi in there, they both complement each other though similar to Walters and Ballas so I'm looking forward to them being in the same team in a few weeks time (hopefully); there's been very few games where they've actually both played.

I think 211 should be tried in the goal square with Ballas, Mayne and Walters at his feet.

Definitely! Especially since we seem to be bombing it on a lot of late.

I reckon Sandi could have kicked a lot more goals too if he hadn't been the only ruckman in our 22 for most of his career.
Love big Griff, suits our future set up very well. Silenced a few critics about his mobility and fitness too. Would like to see how he goes for a full game at FF.

Liking the look of Hannath too. That kid is seriously built, looks like he's improving with every outing. Things are looking good for the future.

So, you are saying Sandilands and Griffin are like Walters and Ballantyne. Have I got that right?

They complement each other in the same way Walters and Ballas do ie; they iron out the deficiencies of the other.

I'm not saying ruckmen are the same as small forwards no

Personally I think that Adelaide should get some credit for being classy. So should we for the Robbo move.

Rather than just saying it's expected, and the club should get no credit for it, I'd rather recognise each of the clubs that do it... as having done the right thing.

The Slime did the same for Ebert. Let him go back home as they weren't giving him much of a run, and he wanted to go home. Let him go back for a reasonable trade and didn't try to bend the Power over. Power did pretty well from that. Equal second in their B&F in his first year, and is now their vice captain in his second.

Ebert was a #13 pick and the Weags had sunk a fair bit of time into his development. In return they got pick #28 (and a minor upgrade on a later pick). It seems unlikely to me that they thought it was full value, but they still took the trade. Everyone wins (especially the Power).

From some of the crap that Ebert dished up for the Eagles I reckon that they did very well.

He's definitely gone up a level since going to Poooort.

Well, he's getting to play as a hard running midfielder rather than a half forward flanker, or a sub. I'd say that has something to do with it.

I'm sure that neither the Weags nor Port are surprised that he's playing well. I don't think his capabilities emerged from nowhere... a mix of opportunity and responsibility (young side around him) seem to have helped him step up that level.

Am now well off topic, so will end my blab there.

Thanks srobe00 and dockerz for the info about how we got the big fella great to see him play so well for us and apparently bleeds purple all good!

Big call, got a lot of very good recruits in the last few years. He was the right price, supported us as a kid and has been more than handy.

Moller and Clark may well still go past him. I just hope he gets past the magical 100 games mark.
