Re: Griffen

i said only marginally ahead. warnock just seems to have a bit more to work with. he's a year younger, four centimetres taller and four kgs heavier. it's line-ball though, and as I said - they're level on current form.

As an Adelaide supporter living in the west I've seen a fair bit of both these guys. If I had a choice of Warnock or Griffin I'd take Griff.

Both are pretty raw at this stage of ther career, but both will be good AFL ruckmen. Griff could actually be better than that, he could well develop into one of the premier ruckmen in the comp.

You are right about Warnock being the year younger though, when you see how much these guys can come on in a year it makes it hard to judge. Think Maric and Griff from last year.

Re: Griffen

Adelaide gain: Pick 6 (Carlton), Pick 21 (Freo)
Carlton gain: Pick 10 (Crows), Warnock
Fremantle gain: Griffin, Pick 37 (Carlton)

Adelaide lose: Pick 10, Griffin
Carlton lose: Pick 6, Pick 37
Fremantle lose: Warnock, Pick 21

Fair or too biased?

carlton would be happy, adelaide would be happy, freo would be unhappy.

Re: Griffen

I don't have a problem if Freo want to tempt him (they should, and probably are) and I don't have a problem if Griffin is feeling a bit star struck and flattered (perhaps he should) - my only concern is my club does what's right for itself. which is either hold onto him, or extract strong value.

either is fine by me, but as he is contracted I would be unhappy with any other outcome.

I agree. This may end up being Rendell's biggest test. He came out of the Hudson trade looking like a bit of a goose. Hopefully he can make amends, given that we hold more cards this time around.

Re: Griffen

Griffin will not be leaving us. It's just another load of crap from his manager Colin Young (Daniel Kerr ring a bell anyone?) trying to get him a contract extension with more $$$.

He got to be our lead ruckman for half the season despite only being 22 and with about 15 games under his belt so I'd say he will get plenty of opportunities here. If he goes to Freo, then he will be second fiddle to Sandilands who is not old, so he will get less TOG over there.

The only way I'd consider trading him to that dirty mob would be if it got us Haselby or Pavlich.

Re: Griffen

Perhaps, but they don't exactly have a ton of bargaining power. Warnock wants to go to Carlton, and he's out of contract. They want Griffin, who IS contracted.
All they've really got to bargain with is Melbourne's interest, who could pick him up for nothing if no trade gets done anyway.
If anyone should lose out here, it's Fremantle.

Re: Griffen

So we lose pick 10 and one of the competitions most promising young ruckman just to jump 4 spots in the draft?? If we were jumping into the top 3, you would maybe consider it. But not from 10 to 6.

EDIT: Didn't see pick 21, woops. In that case that's probably not a bad trade.

Re: Griffen

Melbourne are very much in the frame. they are the leverage that his manager will be using to get Freo to accept a trade from Carlton.

Just like Carlton wasn't Nick Stevens first choice, Melbourne are far from out of the running. they are looming in the shadows ready to pounce in the same way.

what's more, Melbourne could also do a veale deal to convince Freo not to trade him to Carlton....

the demons are front and centre relevant here still.

It also gives us a bit of strength at the bargaining table as well; especially because Griff is contracted.

If they can't satisfy us, then they'll lose Warnock and not get the ruckman they want in return - and if Carlton can't satisfy us, the entire deal falls apart.

I honestly think Griff will be a star, and I'd be filthy if we lost him.

Him and Maric, in the next couple of years, would, in my opinion, easily because the best ruck pairing in the Competition; they would dominate. And they both have the ability to make an impact around the ground as well - Maric obviously at this stage; but Griff has also shown signs of how good his skills are for a big man; just needs more fitness and muscle.

Worst case, we lose Griff and Maric is forced to ruck 80% of the game, with Moran permanently in a BP or similar, Kurt at FF, and those two taking the ruck when it's in there area.

I'd hate to lose Griff based on how good I think he could be, but if we do lose him, and he does want to go home, as long as he doesn't screw us over, then I'd wish him well and just hope we get max value.

is there a chance hartlett could still be there at pick six?

If this is the deal and parties, then we hold the upper hand. It's going to be interesting to see how we handle this.

Re: Griffen

Sorry people were saying we need to be aggresive to get a STAR player. Gibbs is that type of palyer.

Mackay will be good and Griffin has potential but as I said Gibbs will be a franchise player.

You have to give to get.

Also the fossil reference is stupid.

I actually agree with you - the chances to get true quality are very rare, and we're giving up two solid players for something of real impact.

That being said, there is no way that Carlton would agree to this.

Re: Griffen

Yep.

Coast to Coasts deal doesn't look that bad actually.

You calmed down over the course of this thread. You went from "boy's club disaster etc etc" to "doesn't look so bad, actually".

I LIKE Coast to Coast's deal and think it is actually pretty fair, for the reasons dandy stated.

Otherwise, I think we're talking a second and third round, unless with the trades for Mundy and Warnock Freo get some other assets they can pass on. Mundy might be a late first and second, so that could be interesting.

Re: Griffen

Isn’t Hawthorn interested in David Mundy? Pick 13, 14, 15 or 16 for Mundy.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24326720-5012432,00.html

Fremantle then on trade that for Griffen. Hawthorn are looking at topping up on senior player to make a run for that elusive premiership, draft pick are not really in order for them at the moment so a player like David Mundy may be a good fit.

Freemantle gain – Jonathon Griffen
Adelaide Gain – Hawthorn first round pick (13-16)
Hawthorn gain – David Mundy.

IMO that sounds about fair and in the same league as Cameron Wood as he was traded for a mid teens pick.

it was brent-83's suggestion. i like it too, but i'm not sure freo will.

although as dandy pointed out, we're in a stronger position than them.

Re: Griffen

It was my deal you bastards! :D

It was suggested we give Freo our third rounder aswell. I'd probably take that as word is that Freo are looking for a lot of picks due to losing so many players this year.

That looks alright.

Is Mundy worth that?

Re: Griffen

So what would be acceptable for Gibbs do you think?

Judging how Carlton bent the WCE over last year regarding the trade of Chris Judd and using that as a bench mark. Gibbs would be worth pick 10 and a player like Dangerfield. IMO.

Re: Griffen

I don’t know but he would be worth that much if is if Hawthorn were willing to pay it.

Not sure if i would be happy giving up pick 14 for David Mundy but we are not at the same state of development as Hawthorn is.

Re: Griffen

Jesus christ, don't make the mistake of looking at the Griffin thread on the Freo board.
There's a few there who seem to think he's worth no more than a 4th rounder "for a 4th string ruckman".

i would rather Warnock go into the PSD then a straight swap for Griffin.

we might as well bend over and take it if we're going to take a 4th string ruckman in a straight swap for one of the most promising ruckman in the country.

Yep.

Griffin is a total hack.

Why would we want to touch him when he would be behind Kepler, Gilmore and MiJ who came through Juniors and Sowfs and rookied for us as a ruck?

COMEDY GOLDMINE!

Sorry - you deserve some congrats, as decent trade suggestions on Big Footy are pretty rare ... :thumbsu:
