Re: Griffen

Isn’t Hawthorn interested in David Mundy? Pick 13, 14, 15 or 16 for Mundy.

http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24326720-5012432,00.html

Fremantle then on trade that for Griffen. Hawthorn are looking at topping up on senior player to make a run for that elusive premiership, draft pick are not really in order for them at the moment so a player like David Mundy may be a good fit.

Freemantle gain – Jonathon Griffen
Adelaide Gain – Hawthorn first round pick (13-16)
Hawthorn gain – David Mundy.

IMO that sounds about fair and in the same league as Cameron Wood as he was traded for a mid teens pick.

The challenge for us is - considering the stronger draft pool and (perceived) value of draft picks this year compared to last, as well as the fact outside of SA folks consider Griffin this year to be very comparable to Wood last year and now that deal is seen to have been Collingwood overpaying, I don't think we will get what Brisbane got for Wood.

That being said - there are other things in our favor that put us in a stronger position, so maybe we will ...

Re: Griffen

It also gives us a bit of strength at the bargaining table as well; especially because Griff is contracted.

If they can't satisfy us, then they'll lose Warnock and not get the ruckman they want in return - and if Carlton can't satisfy us, the entire deal falls apart.

I honestly think Griff will be a star, and I'd be filthy if we lost him.

Him and Maric, in the next couple of years, would, in my opinion, easily because the best ruck pairing in the Competition; they would dominate. And they both have the ability to make an impact around the ground as well - Maric obviously at this stage; but Griff has also shown signs of how good his skills are for a big man; just needs more fitness and muscle.

Worst case, we lose Griff and Maric is forced to ruck 80% of the game, with Moran permanently in a BP or similar, Kurt at FF, and those two taking the ruck when it's in there area.

I'd hate to lose Griff based on how good I think he could be, but if we do lose him, and he does want to go home, as long as he doesn't screw us over, then I'd wish him well and just hope we get max value.

worse case could be much worse.........lose maric to a knee over pre-season and suddenly we have only 2 ruck options for next yr whilst robbing the team of any real flexibility with the talls we have earmaked for either end of the ground

Re: Griffen

You calmed down over the course of this thread. You went from "boy's club disaster etc etc" to "doesn't look so bad, actually".

I LIKE Coast to Coast's deal and think it is actually pretty fair, for the reasons dandy stated.

Otherwise, I think we're talking a second and third round, unless with the trades for Mundy and Warnock Freo get some other assets they can pass on. Mundy might be a late first and second, so that could be interesting.

i noticed that also. must be the medication kicking in at 11am

Exactly!!

I don't want to trade Griffin at all.

He's a quality ruckman in the making and he and Maric will end up one of, if not the premier pair of ruckmen in the AFL in a couple of years time.

As you say, an injury to Maric and our whole structure becomes decimated if Griffin goes.

If he insists on going home then I'd screw Freo's arms and legs off - he is a contracted player FFS!!

None of this second round bullshit.

That's the thing.

When healthy he's in our 22.

YOung and pull of potentail and our lack of back ups = NO TRADE

Add to that that the guy who started this rumour with no proof is the same guy who just rehashed it with the 300K signing rubbish.

He has not given anything to validate these rumours, therefore this = RUBBISH

yep. Before his injury, the signs were very promising. Because of his contract status, we are dealing from a position of strength, lets use it.

But as you said, i would much prefer if he stayed, doesn't sound good though.

Re: Griffen

Pick 3, Pavlich or Palmer is what I would be asking otherwise he can fulfil his contract. There's no way we should accept a mediocre deal for a player with as much potential as Griffin has, especially when he's still contracted.

Re: Griffen

On the Wood deal, you have to remember that last years draft, whilst quite solid for the first 10~ picks had a major drop off round about pick 14. I do think Griffin is worthy of a pick around this stage, but this draft is very solid in the 5-25 range imo. A club won't be as quick as Collingwood were last year to hand off the pick for a young ruckman.

Very, very nice suggestion. :thumbsu: :)

The Hawks could really do with a guy like Mundy in their team. He has the ability to play down back or on the wing and although he's not the toughest guy going around, he won't need to be as the Hawks have a ton of the tough, big bodied midfielders and defenders. Mundy is extremely skillful and is an elite user of the footy, I honestly think he is a perfect fit for their team.

The Dockers gain a young ruckman which they will need as they are losing one, and they can now pick up whoever they feel is the best available when it comes to their pick. We recieve a first rounder which means we'll then have 2 first rounders, possibly drafting a mid and a CHF.

Can't help but get the feeling we'd be getting too good a deal though. ;)

Re: Griffen

Yeh, the number 1 rule when discussing hypothetical trades.. If you think its a really good trade, its more than likely not fair. As much as i think Griffin is worth pick number 14, I'd imagine Fremantle would rather keep the pick given the depth in this draft. They could potentially pick up Natanui and then another young gun with pick 14 instead.

Re: Griffen

Melbourne are very much in the frame. they are the leverage that his manager will be using to get Freo to accept a trade from Carlton.

Just like Carlton wasn't Nick Stevens first choice, Melbourne are far from out of the running. they are looming in the shadows ready to pounce in the same way.

what's more, Melbourne could also do a veale deal to convince Freo not to trade him to Carlton....

the demons are front and centre relevant here still.
Warnock has to agree to the trade and to play for the Demons because he is uncontracted.

Matthews let Hadley go for just pick 52 because Richard didn't want to play for Richmond and enter the PSD as an uncontracted player.

Clubs don't want to burn bridges in trades. ;)

I doubt Fremantle would be as fickle as Port were in the Stevens trade and not play ball by screwing a young kid over in trade week. Especially since Essendon were pricks last year when they asked for a late pick for Bradley who was on the way out in the first place. A dog act when they didn't even want Bradley and forced him into the draft wilderness because they tried to get a pick above his worth.

The Dockers have more leverage than most people think when they have a pick before Carlton.

Yet the deal will be weighted in our favour.

How is Wonderland Alice? pffft - tough guy.

lol. just absolutely 100% genuine bona-fide gold medal winning lol. this post combined with your kind private offer to 'catch up' to discuss our differences is actually the funniest (and saddest ;)) thing ive ever read on big footy.

best of luck trying to achieve a fulfilling life of happiness, success and prosperity old son ;)

Not sure if this is true. I think we may start to see more clubs put their foot down on refuse trades that they think are unfair. It is part of establishing a culture at your club.

At some stage Freo needs to show that they won't continually roll over, and now might be the time.

Re: Griffen

i just hope Crows don't fold; Griffin is worth higher than Carlton's pick 24. think about it this way...Carlton are trying to recruit a 206cm guy who will be their no.1 ruckman next year. if they want Warnock, they'd have to give higher than pick 24. For Freo, i'd think Warnock for Griffin is fair. just don't want to see the Crows screwed over again...if a deal can't be made, Griffin must stay.

Re: Griffen

If we do happen to trade Griffin, we will need to try and bring a ready made ruckman from somewhere. Maric has only come good in the 2nd half of the year, Tippett and Moran are more key postion players and after that our cupboard is bare.

I am not adverse to trading Griffin at the right price but we would need to bring in a ruckman with 3-4 years development already behind him, bearing in mind Port are looking for the exact same type of player.

Unless Carlton are only offering a fringe player or less than their 2nd rounder, Fremantle can't afford to let Warnock walk for nothing. Josh Carr is expected to walk to Port in the PSD and with 7 or 8 other spots empty after retirements, there needs to be something better to fill them with than picks in the 90s.

A trade will be done between Fremantle and Carlton. Something between their first rounder or second rounder + reasonable player.

Re: Griffen

There is no possible way we should consider trading Griffin.

An AFL club cannot go into a season with just a single recognised ruckman and a pair of KPP/Utility rucks as support on its list and expect to go anywhere, especially when the whole lot of them are 22 and under.

The only way to do it would be if we received a ready made ruckman at least 22 years old in the trade, and honestly, who the hell is going to just give us one of those?

Exactly!!!

He is a required player and is under contract. If we are going to give him up for a second rounder, how about we throw in van Berlo, Mackay and Dangerfield plus pick 10 FFS.

His manager who also manages Warnock and Kerr is becoming notorious for rumour-mongering simply to get his clients a better pay packet (and hence himself). Let's give Griff more money on the proviso he sacks the trouble making piece of dogsh!t.

I'm pretty sure Melbourne would just have to agree to his wage/contract period demands to pick him up in psd. Warnock doesn't necessarily need to agree to go there.

I hope Carlton don't burn bridges in this trade too...:p

Yeah that's the issue for him, there's no wage/contract demand that he could make that would be both affordable by Carlton, and beyond the salary cap limits of the Demons. All the Visy Ambassadorships in the world just won't count at the PSD table.
