His tackling numbers are a real standout in addition to his contested marking.

In the 3 games to date, Griffiths has clunked 8 contested marks. Equal top in the AFL, with Waite and Sandilands. Let me just say that again. Equal top in the AFL.

Griffiths has been our single only target during those terrible phases of play when the 17 other blokes on the ground have stopped moving. And he hasn't just brought the ball to ground in those big packs down the line. He has reeled in some critical marks, so our tired troops can clear the backline.

To go with his contested marks, he has 31 disposals (71% effective), 15 tackles, 28 hit-outs and 4 goals 3.

Someone said above that he hasn't made it yet, and I'd agree. 3 good games is exactly that. 3 good games. I'd love to see Griffith in 23 or 24 good games by the end of the season.

Imagine how fast all his goodwill from Richmond supporters and those at the club would erode if he started picking off young kpps just starting to click.
Lynch mob would form in about 5 minutes.

I love Griff, but by god he isn't the second coming of Royce (yet anyway).

People are trashing TV as a pathetic player whilst Griff is awesome. Yet TV had twice as many goals as Griff. Griff is doing very well and could develop into a genuine AFL KPF. He even has the tools to be an A grade KPF. So does TV. And we know JR is A grade. Griff is getting the third defender and doing well. He hasn't ripped a game apart yet. But I reckon in the next while he might just tear someone a new backside. If he gets good service and the ball loves him he could cut loose. But he hasn't done that yet. He is roughly tracking where I hoped when we drafted him. But then TV could also rip a game apart if we service him well. And JR might just have come out of his summer hibernation. I hope so as an in form JR is firstly a great player and secondly frees up TV and Griff. One day we might see good service from our mids and three quality talls going gangbusters. That's when I get excited. Right now the three talls are getting by, just. Griff is looking good, and should get better. Let the midfield service him properly, and JR and TV get into form, and then we shall see if this his top line performance or just an entree to the main course.

Goals is probably the worst stat to compare them on given TY is effectively playing deep forward, not doing any ruck work and is the main target. Griffiths has shown he can take big contested pack marks, I have rarely seen Vickery do this, in fact I have mostly seen him drop these. Vickery for me is limited as a lead up player or very limited contested marker as to be honest I think he is quite soft (he likes to be tough when it doesn't count).

Obviously forecasting a bit, but on ability and talent I think Griffiths will be a better more complete player than Vickery and someone the opposition have to watch as a lead up and contested marking.

Yes and no. They play different roles right now. But Ty gets double teamed and is often under the pump deep. Grif is much freer/further up the ground and has the third defender. To me Ty shows he can take a high grab, lead well and is agile for his size. It's just that he rarely puts it all together. However he is on track for a 59 goal season, whilst Griff is on track for a 29/30 goal season. Means very little after 3 rounds. But Ty is playing just OK footy and scoring goals, that's a great sign. Griff is playing well and scoring less. However, Griff's role is really to pull the defence out and create uncertainty. From what I have seen Griff is nearly ready to rip it up. That might be the sign we have a good one, or it might just mean he is against very little defensively. I think the first - he is a good one.

Nonetheless, Griff playing well doesn't mean Ty is crap. So far Ty has outplayed Jack. We know jack can be the Coleman winner. He needs to return to form. Ty is a good player and doing his job. He is certainly nowhere near the worst player we have at the moment. Ty should be entering the fully developed phase of his career. What I am seeing so far this year is inconsistency, which has been through his career. Griff is doing a great job, and should get better. So I sort of agree, Griff can do some thigns better than Ty. But I have seen Ty in several games perform A grade standard. I haven't ever seen that from Griff. Griff I think will become a good to very good AFL KPF. Ty can do that, but needs to turn his worst to decent and his average to good. I reckon they are fairly even in their capability, but neither is fully mature. Give me Ty against carlton every week and we have the coleman medalist. Give me his other two games and we have an OK role player. OK role players are alright for a KPF. But they don't win GF's.

I wouldnt be against trading 1 of Astbury/Grimes in return for a skilled fast midfielder - Do they have any that we might want and they would be prepared to let go ?
Robertson,Beams, Taylor

Lewie Taylor would be nice
D.Rich would look fine in a Richomnd top.
If Griff or Astbury did look at other offers at least playing them this season will increase their values. At current rate of approval i would demand a late first round pick minimum for each.

Understandable if griff wanted to leave last year, he wasn't getting a game! I'd be quite surprised if he wanted to leave if he played a full season this year!

I'm all for dropping Vickery and letting Griff play every game this year, it's pretty obvious that he will improve whilst Ty will most likely not. It comes down to us being too tall at the moment, teams killing us when someone doesn't clunk a mark down there as stated a few times in this thread. Vickery has the worst defensive side to his game in our forward line and imo does not offer more offensively than Az Edwards, who is a much better chaser/tackler. Also bring in C Knights as I think he adds a lot both ways and has a very good left boot. Ultimately i'd like to see our fwd line like this:

Martin, Riewoldt, Knights
A Edwards, Griffiths, King/Lloyd

A fit Ivan rotating through aswell and we still have very decent height.

Im starting to think Vickery would have been best suited to the ruck. I feel his body is ready and has the size to compete now.
I would have hoped that the club didn't draft Hampson and used Vickery for this role allowing for Griff to play Vickery's role. We have other forwards waiting for a gig in A.Edwards, Elton and Mcbean.

Its almost like Dimma and Co have no faith in our list. Rather then trying to blood our own we keep on drafting other clubs rejects (maybe a bit harsh)

I would have liked to have seen

Llyod, Griff, Knights
A. Edwards, Riewoldt, Elton/Mcbean

Vickery ruck rotating with Griff/Elton

We have start playing the players we draft.

Elton impressed me in the pre-season, wouldnt mind seeing him get a few games this year. His kicking is a worry but i rekon it will improve with confidence. Vickery should be at least tried as a first ruck for a game or two with Griff and Elton rotating in the FF spot.

Well frankly that's soft imo.
Why? Would you play ressies in a state away from home or play AFL in your home state.

Griff was treated pretty poorly. From us outsiders it was part club screwing him around part him not having a heart but let's be honest how many people would blame themselves over the club? Probably not many. That's life.

Hopefully Griff holds his position and stays. At least we'd get better than the saints offer of 48. (I actually thought we were offered worse than that)

Aaron Edwards really isn't that good and I would prefer McBean/Elton to get games ahead of him.
Mcbean isn't ready. Elton definitely deserves a crack at some point. At least we have a back-up if something goes wrong. We've barely had 2 key forwards let alone 4.
