Opinion Grimes

He's gonna start getting called a ducker if he isn't already. Seems to draw high free kicks in an almost Selwood type manner.
agree. loved his game but this move he's introduced in the last few games. Has worked so far but isn't a sustainable way of playing IMO (well, unless you're Joel Duckwood). Bad look and I think he needs to think how to better execute when in that type of a situation. If the high tackle happens, it happens, Grimes' job should be to focus on the best alternative action not focus on perfecting the drawing of the free which he seems to be doing when under 1-on-1 pressure and about to be tackled.

Loved his game mind you. My comment is more aimed at focusing on little things to make more complete players.

Can only see Grimes getting better with the more consecutive games he plays in a row. He had a lot of injury setbacks to overcome when he was trying to establish himself as an AFL footballer. That can not be forgotten when rating his current form.

Grimes is going along nicely now and his versatility to play on either a tall or small forward is is very important to our defensive set-up.

i dont think he was that good last year..was serviceable but not great...not best 22 yet...

He kept the best in the comp pretty quiet.... Cloke, Hawkins both goalless I think.... he was winning or 2nd in our bnf at the point when Rance returned I think... that's better than serviceable. However I agree he isn't currently best 22. Should be doing everything he can to take Chaplin's spot.... Astbury is better suited on the really 'tall' talls... if that makes sense. Chaplin gets a bit scared so to speak... Astbury will do better on the giants than Chaplin will.... good to have him on the list.

Why is it not sustainable? The umps have said that this is a perfectly legitimate tactic to draw a free kick.

Do you know if the umps have certainly said that? What I've heard is guys like Leigh Matthews and a few others saying it is perfectly fine gamemanship and the onus is on the tackler to go lower, but I've not personally heard the umps say it (however they may have). What i did hear from Wayne Campbell is there is presently quite a lot of grey area and they may need to tweak the interpretation even mid season.

Why I don't think it is sustainable is (a) i think the player should be thinking about the first option realistic option to dispose of the ball as #1 priority not thinking of how to do best draw another free as their first mindset, and (b) I actually don't agree with Leigh Matthews, and given our relative standings in the game are on par ;-), I think my view of it is not in the spirit of the game to obviously change level of the head, should be a considered a counter argument. Hate to think we have any Lyndsey Thomas's at the tigers.

yes good as depth at the moment but not good enought for the 22

Brad Scott said he asked the umpires and they told him it's a free kick. I'm just glad we finally have players smart enough to use the rules to their advantage. Miles is good at it too.

Miles has more head high frees than joel duckwood since Miles made his debut for us lmaoooo go Milesy

Optimus has become a pro at it too

Most of Miles are from putting his head down to gather the hard ball more than turning legit tackles into frees ala Selwood.

Way better playing tall than playing small.

Been terrific. Approaching early 2012 form

It can (as it did in 2012) all go to custard with one twing of a hammy (touch some wood, everyone), but he's an asset I'd almost totally written off.

Deserves much credit, and speaks so well

Can anyone here elaborate why they think Grimes will become such a good player. Frankly i dont see it.
I think one area that hes done well in, is as the third man up and spoiling well. You would expect that from anyone who plays that third tall role.

What else is there to the third tall role. Wheres the run and carry, the rebounding, the delivery inside 50, finding a bit of ball, dont we want these things from our third tall.Wheres the intercept marks and tackles.
He is never going to play kp unless we have a horror run with injuries. He just doesnt have the size for the role and likely never will.
I wont elaborate on what i really dislike about him.

Yep it would be good to hear why people think hes going to become such a good player. I ask because i just cant see it. I'm hoping he can become a good honest citizen i cant envision him being much more.

I'll try to answer that.

Grimes closing speed is elite. He also is a smart footballer. I love the fact he has latched on to the Selwood technique to play for High contact. I hate that players get away with it but while UMPs are letting it ride, then go for it IMO. he also has very neat disposal. He offers us versatility, as he can play on mediums and talls.

Now you have to keep in mind, he has not even played over 100 games yet, so he is improving in leaps and bounds. He is defeniatly starting 22, I would even say he has taken over his brother. If he can play all games this year, he will grow from strength to strength.

Watch his interview from after the game on saturday, speaks very well. Impressive individual on and off the field by the looks of things.
