Good stuff Thylacine.

I must say though that this youtube (although a very good effort) does no justice for the atmosphere created in 'real life'...nothing better than the grog squad in full voice...win, lose or draw...echoeing under the southern...great noise from typically 'mad Richmond supporters'...I fcukin love it!!!

Beware the YELLOW & BLACK ARMY once success comes our way...
 
A short story on the Richmond Grog Squad....
Out at Waverley possibly 20 years ago. No mates on that day - doing other stuff or sick or something. I take myself out to VFL as it is called. I sit right up the back of the Cheers Squad, for some company. Well I happen to sit near this kid (I say kid, but would have only been a couple of years younger than me) who I've sat near before. He knows me by sight and I knew him by sight.

Well, it's Richmond V St.Kilda, and we are getting pumped early. These St.Kilda 2 dudes are sitting to the right of me, maybe a couple of years older and mouthing off big time on the Tigers. Calling us every name under the sun. They are both 'pickled' and don't give a stuff about anyone. The young kid sitting next to me has had enough and tells them to clean up their language. They tell the kid where to go. I tell them to give the kid a break and shut up.
Richmond hit the front late in the match. It's time on, and all of a sudden, in the aisle, I have these 2 original guys, and 2 of their mates who've come from nowhere. One of the St.Kilda dudes whispers to me that I'm history after the siren, and then they continue screaming abuse at Richmond.

I realise that tonight I'll be spending time in hospital. I'm afraid cause I know the kid next to me will be no help, but I may as well go down swinging, albeit on a hiding to none.

The siren goes for a Richmond win, and all I see is a blur from below that flies up the aisle and collides with the four abusive St.Kilda supporters.
Whack, smack, crash and 4 St.Kilda supporters are lying across the seats, broken noses and bloodied egos. 5-6 Richmond blokes from the Grog Squad had flown up the aisle right on the siren to dish out some justice.
As 4 Grog Squad members disappeared back into the crowd, I was left with the one remaining member overseeing his handy work.

I thanked the last Richmond pugilist, telling him I was on a hiding to nothing and he just turned and said, don't worry about it mate, "We were keeping an eye on those big mouth ****wits all day!" "Just had to pick our time".

The last guy disappeared as fast as he appeared, and I was left to think how close I came to a caning.

A bloke in front of me said...."You just had a visit from the Richmond Grog Squad".............I felt like Santa had just been.

Thanks Richmond Grog Squad, after all these years I've still got all my teeth.

(btw.....if we ever have a few years of finals......we will be the most popular, vocal team in the AFL.......you'll have to book that far in advance to see a game it will be a joke....lol)

Been to Ess vs Richmond games with IDGAF and stood near the RGS.

The loudest bunch of pi--ed lunatics ever to grace a football ground.:thumbsu:...funny buggers..

I used to stand in the same spot in the early 80's under the old Southern Stand with the Richmond cheer squad upstairs above us...I could hear and see thee yellow and black fury from an early age:o:p

IDGAF......a lot of these guys don't realise that even before my story, say mid 70's, footy grounds were a lot more violent and the grounds were awash with heavy beer (cans etc).

I can remember being a kid, watching men punch on at Windy hill, Arden St and Vic Park. I was scared as a kid, and the guys punching on weren't interested in belting me. But I was a kid and didn't understand that.
(By my 20's I was drinking at the footy, could hold beer and hold up my fists if need be, but I was never looking for a fight)

And don't get me started on the old VFA grounds.

Thankfully today's football grounds are family orientated.
The AFL has provided a safer and more female friendly environment.
I think it's great to see family's all kitted out in their team colours.
But it wasn't always like that.

But still today, if you live with you head up your arse, someone is still bound to kick it in.

Happy, funny drunks, who don't spoil other ppls day at the footy should be acceptable.
But violent, abusive drunks should never be tolerated.

Whats yr problem mate? I am glad Delib didn't get a beating, but there's other ways of proving yr a man than getting in a blue.

To be honest,
I was history that day Paddles.....would have gone home in a box...
I was doing the right thing, the kid with me had had enough of these guys abuse too...
I had no idea the Grog Squad were even near the Cheer Squad.

Just shows, there's always a bigger bully to give someone a smacking.
But I don't believe the Grog Squad went looking for a blue.
I guess they could see I was in for a belting.
The kid and I had Tiger scarves on.

I can't judge it as good or bad.....it happened...it's life.

Fair enough, its a rough old world at times, but i dont need abuse from other posters over this.
