The evenness of the quality players in the Lions Reserves side put paid to any individual winning the Grogan Medal with three Lions finishing close behind winner Jacob Gough.

The state league’s equivalent of the Brownlow Medal was won by the Morningside ruckman-forward with 19 votes, three clear of hard working Lions centre-half-forward Shane Morrison and bustling Mt Gravatt utility Ben Batahla.

Morrison was level with Gough at one stage late in the count, but the big Panther’s excellent finish to the year saw him become Morningside’s 13th player to win the award.

Pre-count favourite Richard Hadley finished fifth with 13 votes, one behind surprise packet Daniel Merrett.

Merrett, in just his second full season of football after taking up the game on a whim to help out some mates on the Gold Coast, polled strongly during the middle stages of the year when he was a solid marking target at full forward and on the ball.

Ruckman Dylan McLaren also polled strongly with nine votes, the Lions picking up all six votes in a game on every occasion when they were at full strength.

But it was a great night for Queensland product Gough, who has been nurtured through the Queensland junior system.

The night was made even better for the Morningside club, with ruckman Rhys Dahl being named the Bill Clerke Medallist for the reserve grade best and fairest, also polling 19 votes.

The top nine placegetters were:

Jacob Gough Morningside 19
Ben Batahla Mt Gravatt 16
Shane Morrison Lions 16
Daniel Merrett Lions 14
Richard Hadley Lions 13
David James Southport 13
Glen Conroy Morningside 12
Justin Wilson Morningside 12
Peter Wolfe Nthn Eagles 12

Congratulations to all our boys on a fantastic season.

cheers ... Kaz

Goughy is a great player, great size, body shape would allow him to be an immediate option. He has great endurance, was an extremely good cross country runner when he was a kid, hands like a steal trap, very good leap. Leg speed may be a bit of a concern. Is quite one sided and a little slow hand to foot. Heart like Pharlap, brave as they come, unbelievable work ethic and extremely intelligent. All round a very good footballer and a top bloke. Love to see him get a preseason, surely he has earnt one.

damn it..... i had a great post written for this... & then lost it all....

good onya lenny... cost cutting is always good....
got a bit of a twinge in my shoulder... do u think that Jacob could help me with that.. LOL
hes a good bloke hey....

i reckon even though i dont want to say it but he will be the difference between the 2 sides 2morro...we love the mount gravatt ruckman....Russ Alleway... a name reknowned @ the club with his brother Clint having a stint on the rookie list with us.....but rusty is smaller & less experienced in the seniors than jacob & i know that rusty will give it his best but we just have to wait & see if he can be as good as jacob....

carn the siders!

BTW.... good on all our boys....
