Guerra's been delisted while specialist interchange players have had their careers extended by another year. Guerra's only 23 and been very servicable at StKilda and Port, while the other two are at the end of their careers, albeit they had a good season. The Saints also have Harvey to share a lot of benchtime, so there will need to be a geriatric nurse and a zimmerframe on hand on the interchange bench. Looks like they have a flag in mind for 2006 otherwise its back to the drawing board.

Last year Brisbane made a similar short term decision to delist Caracella, and keep Pike and White. Didnt pay off though.

A few questions for the Saints supporters.

1. Do you think its shortsighted?
2. If there was no room for Guerra why wasnt he shopped around at trade week? Surely he would have had trade value - is the administration not on top of their cap position?
3. Does GT have that much faith in Stephen Milne that the Saints dont need any other small forward options?
4. After recruiting another tall and delisting a mid/small, are the Saints too top heavy?
5. Is Guerra any good?

1. No
2. Maybe he was but nobody showed interest.
3. Rightly so, comparing the returns over the last two years - 44 goals to 107 over the past two seasons.
4. Doubt it.
5. I never thought so. Not bad on his day but not enough of them.

was he given much game time though? I always thought he added a bit as a small forward. Toughness and goal sense, you can't expect him to kick bags all the time but often added 2 or 3 goals. I don't think St Kilda used him very well.

Guerra is the first delisted player that has me stumped. It's just about a certainty that he will be playing league footy next year... and probably likely to be the first recycled player picked up in the draft. I'm hoping the Swans have a look at 52 if he's still there.

I can understand the Saints' desire to keep Thommo and Peckett for sentimental reasons... but this is a very strange decision.

As a Port supporter I think I might chip in also.

1. Do you think its shortsighted?
Probably not. The Saints would have known of the behavioural and attitudinal issues Port couldn't handle with this kid (still quite young despite looking 43 y.o.). He clearly can't have changed much or he would have been a first 22 player for the past 2 years.
5. Is Guerra any good?
Absolutely. Heaps of talent, though a bit keen on the biffo. Too late now, has thrown his career away. Perhaps Carlton will grab him in the PSD and reunite him with his mate Nick Stevens?

1 no
2 he was shopped around no one wanted him
3 milne has kicked more than 45 goals every season since promotion (he has an average of 2.1 goals per game the only small forward with a higher average is phil matera), other options are available hungry joe montagna and NDS
4 we have a lot of smalls to call on and our depth in talls is limited
5 yes he is good, but has bad team discipline and won't train as hard as other players. Geurra lots of talent low on attitude IMO.

Pity for him. Looked set for a long and fine career at Port but liked the nightlife too much, didnt play by the team rules and wanted to go back to Melbourne. Seemed a bit lost at St Kilda. His role in the side seemed to be to hit as many people as possible. Always liked him more off a back flank at Port as it kept him busy and alert more than when he seemed to go wandering a bit in a forward pocket.

Although he loved a bump when at Port, it seems thats all he wanted to do at St Kilda this year, whether this was intructed to him or on his own accord...he had a bad year.

Someone might pick him up again. Play him off a back flank and I reckon a club would get good service out of him for 3-4 years.

CharlieG, that is a silly thing to say. Thommo and Peckett were not kept for sentimental reasons. Peckett was BOG against the Crows in the finals until injured, while Thommo is a hard in and under player who has vast experinece and still has a lot to give.

Guerra has plently of talent and staerted like abomb for the Saints last season. Have heard reports from Port fans even before he joined the Saints he was not much into the discipilne of AFL footy and have heard as such from Linton St.

His form completely tailed off at seasons end and only got a game in the finals because the Saints had nobody else. Was not sighted in either game.

Sad for him as he has talent. Hope this kickin the arse makes him realise that he has the potential to be a really servicable AFL player and he gets picked up by club No 3. If he does it will be his last chance. If he doesn't, he has only himself to blame.

I think the Saints did the right thing retaining Thompson and Peckett. Guerra will get picked up by another club, but I have no problems with their delisting. He's been up and down with form, and has discipline issues.

These old guys need to go for Saints, play the likes of Gwilt McQualter and co and leave these guys go, there time is up. If they can get Gwilt McQualter going it will make them a much better premiership chance in future years.

But neither are capable of playing 100 minutes of footy any more. Nowhere near 100. More like 50. Neither is Robert Harvey. Neither is Aussie Jones, but luckily for StKilda he fell on his sword and retired early. Thats a lot of the same type of player sitting on the bench. I fail to see how Peckitt and Thompson will add much to the Saints next year. Your much vaunted midfield was caught out lacking legspeed at the end, and these guys wont help that.

The tough decision would have been to delist them and keep Guerra, and try to get more out of Guerra (he was pretty good in 2004). But the Saints (imo) took the easy decision. Its understandable, loyalty to the faithful servant and all that, but its shortsighted.

:D This is funny stuff , what are you sniffing Hotpie? To keep Guerra over Peckett and Thompson would have been a stupid decision for a couple of real good reasons.
1, Guerra is no where near the footballer that Peckett and Thommo are and keeping the latter is just a common sense outlook.
2 The Club is showing some loyalty to its vets sending a healthy message to the young guns.

Your thoughts on this matter appear short sighted and don't make very good football sense.

Brisbane Lions supporters were saying the same thing this time last year justifying keeping White and Pike over Caracella. I guess we'll wait and see.

You also have Powell to squeeze into the side - so with Powell Thompson Peckitt and Harvey its a real Dads Army on the interchange, and not a lot of support for Ball Hayes and Dal Santo. These four will all be gone in a year or two, and who have you got coming through? Apart from X and R Clarke (X is always injured) - who else? McGough? McQualter? What if Milne loses form (as he has done many times before) or gets injured?

Sorry Hotpie, too many Ifs and Buts there and the Dads army you speak of pick up kicks at will, the right decision was made.
PS the 2 Fishers are likely lads.

Guerra's like a rabbit in the spotlight when tackled - he just freezes, stunned, and makes no attempt to get rid of it. Just throws his head back to try and milk a free. Looks good when the saints are on fire, absolute rubbish at other times. For all his "toughness" he is not an inside player and not good enough to be an outside running player. We will get more out of Peckitt and Thommo for sure, as they can still do a job.
