The Gumbies made their first Grand Final in their eighth season, against the neighbouring Furies. peterss led a team that included most of the Gumbies’ Hall of Famers with winty lining up at full forward, Buckets007 on a wing and krisholio14 on a half forward flank.

The first quarter was a reasonably tight affair with the Furies edging narrowly in front. Two early goals in the second quarter stretched the lead to 21 points and momentum was with the Furies. The Gumbies managed to hang on, going goal for goal and closing the half down by only seven points.

Both teams kept going goal for goal in the third term, piling on four each, and the Furies took a slender four-point lead into the final change. peterss gave the Gumbies a pump at at three-quarter time, sniffing an opportunity to win the club’s first flag.

The Gumbies kicked the first goal of the final term through ruckman, RangaInTeal, to take the lead for the first time in the game. That lead lasted only minutes as the Furies piled on four goals in five minutes to take the wind out of the Gumbies’ sails. The damage was done and when the final siren rang, the Furies ran out 18-point winners.

peterss (27 disposals, 9 tackles) and Perth Swan (25 disposals, 12 tackles) led a tag team for the Gumbies while winty kicked four goals.

peterss was at the helm again when the Gumbies returned to the final week of the season, alongside co-captain and current Gumby, StFly. The Gumbies won the wooden spoon in season 15 so a Grand Final appearance came as a surprise to many. Another current Gumby, Jeremias, featured alongside the likes of krisholio14, Bucketss and winty, who had played in the season 11 decider.

The Gumbies got on the board early through StFly and winty but the Furies struggled to score, kicking only behinds until their first goal midway through the first quarter. Inaccuracy cost the Gumbies an opportunity for early momentum, kicking 3.7 for the quarter and taking only a ten-point lead into the first change.

An early goal to the Furies in the second quarter was countered by three goals in three minutes to the Gumbies before the Furies kicked three of their own. The Gumbies tried kicking away again but the Furies fought back, taking the lead with a goal on the half time siren.

The Gumbies put pressure on the Furies in the third quarter but inaccuracy cost them again, kick five straight behinds before a peterss goal put them back in front. The Furies levelled and then kicked ahead but the Gumbies took back the lead and went into the final quarter with a 7-point lead.

Both teams peppered the scoreboard early in the final quarter but neither team could wrestle the match away. Both teams ticked over 100 points but the arm wrestle continued as neither team would score for another 7 minutes, when Mr Gor kicked a goal with five minutes to play to give the Gumbies a 7-point lead.

The Furies weren’t done though. 90 seconds later, rfctigerarmy kicked a goal and had closed the deficit to one point with just three minutes remaining for the season.

That would prove to be enough as the Gumbies held on to win by one point and claim their first Sweet FA premiership. Last to first was complete.

Mr Gor was best on ground for the Gumbies with 31 disposals and 7 marks. Teeth149 and peterss were also strong, racking up 27 disposals each. And winty kicked four goals once again. Jeremias would probably want to forget kicking five behinds though.

The club returned to the big dance for the third time in 11 seasons, this time as the Geelong Wolves. krisholio14 would line up for his third Grand Final for the club while Jeremias would line up for his second. The Wolves would take on the West Coast Wonders, featuring a lineup including Marklar_33, who played for the Gumbies’ losing season 11 side, and future Gumbies/Wolves captains, Golumless and haydo.

A slower start to the club’s two previous Grand Finals, the Wolves kicked two early goals while the Wonders struggled to score but a 90-second burst midway through the quarter put the Wonders in front. The rest of the quarter ebbed and flowed but both teams kicked five goals and the Wonders took a 4-point lead into quarter time.

Two early goals in the second quarter were countered by the Wonders then another two goals were countered again. The Wolves’ third attempt to kick away was more successful, kicking three unanswered goals and taking a 14-point lead into the main break.

A shootout ensued early in the third team with both teams going goal for goal before a three-goal burst by the Wonders put them back in front, a five goal to two run in just seven minutes of play. Both teams went toe-to-toe for the rest of the quarter, each ticking over 100 points and ending the term tied on 104 with a quarter to play.

Both teams continued to exchange goals for first 20 minutes of the final term before the Wonders gained the upper hand, stretching the lead to 13 points with five minutes to play. The Wonders grew confident, kicking another goal a minute later to seal their club’s fifth premiership with a 19-point win.

Jeremias redeemed his season 16 performance with 21 disposals and 12 tackles, Hatchy1992 was important as well with 28 disposals and six marks, and manboob and yyou each kicked five goals for the Wolves.

After a very long wait, the Gumbies proved their minor premiership was no fluke, cruising to two comfortable wins in the qualifying and preliminary final. Their opponents, the Las Vegas Bears, have a near-identical narrative by cruising through their two finals after finishing second. Both teams were breaking significant premiership and grand final droughts with each in grand final number four and seeking premiership number two.

The game did not begin well for the Gumbies, with the Bears racing out to a 2.3 (15) to nothing lead half way through the opening quarter. A lack of grand final experience amongst the playing group was certainly showing with just five players playing on the big day before- StFly and Jeremias for the Gumbies along with Mop (Wonders), beez (Bombers) and saintkildaman (Bombers).

Gradually, the Gumbies moved the ball forward and recorded two behinds before rookie cats_09 kicked our opening goal in the 19th minute. From there, it was all Gumbies with beez scoring a goal just before the opening bell, to astoundingly give us a one point quarter time lead.

The second quarter began with more of the same and we had opened up a twenty point lead just 5 minutes into the quarter. Then, just as suddenly, the Bears awoke and in just 7 minutes, scores were level. A ten minute arm wrestle ensued with neither side registering a score for almost ten minutes captivating a full house at SFA Park. Two quick Mop goals saw the Gumbies enter half time fourteen points in front.

The third quarter began sloppily with the Gumbies adding three behinds and the Bears not registering a score. Jeremias broke the deadlock at the 11 minute mark before the Bears immediately responded. That was their last score for the quarter as we flexed our muscle kicking three further goals and taking control in the midfield.

Two goals in the opening two minutes of the last quarter extended the lead to 47 and if the horrors of the season 34 finals series weren't fresh in our minds, we'd be soaking up a likely premiership. As it happened, there was no need to fear as the Bears were denied consecutive goals and a huge 54 point win resulted (the third largest grand final margin to date).

beez and nobbyiscool were dominant in the midfield. The former had 30 disposals and the latter, 23 with 9 tackles. The Deestroy judges rated the tackles more highly, with nobbyiscool taking home the medal for best on ground as the exclamation point on an impressive debut season.

FAST FACT: ruck-rover extraordinaire, GWS Goose, was given just 10% game time by the sim/coach Qraig Bellamy.

CLUB HISTORY

The Gumbies FFC were created in Season 04 under the moniker of "Gumbies" through the application to then administrator EaglesKickAss and remains the 5th oldest club in the league. Under inaugural captain Catman during an expansion and consolidation of the league which saw 2 licenses revoked, and five given to interested parties. Since their addition to the league, the Gumbies have forged a strong identity. Despite an envied top end of talent, the Gumbies continue to struggle to retain players of a good standard which often leaves them always on the cusp of promise.

Geelong Gumbies' first game was in Season 2 Round 2 August 2 2004 versus Blues Brothers, which they won 17.11 (113) to 17.8 (110).

S04 to S06 - The Early Years
After been born into the Sweet FA the Geelong Gumbies had a few lean years while they watched their other newly formed brethren in the Bombers and the Swamprats tasted early positive results. Despite this The Gumbies had a period of stability under the guidance of inaugural captain Catman which lasted three years from Season 04 to Season 06.

S07 to S10 - The Promising Start
In a promising start to Season 07 the Geelong Gumbies made the pre-season grand final in Season 07 and were triumphant over the Alberton Swamprats.

This was a promising start to what was once again a frustrating period at the clubs. During the period from Season 07 through to Season 09 The Gumbies had six different captains in three years.

Ninty to Winty: In Season 10 the Gumbies would once again settle into some stability under new captain Ninty famously known for the Ninty2Winty (CHF to FF) set up.

S11 and S12 - The High before the Low
A strong season, where The Gumbies finished Minor Premiers, would see them meet the Fighting Furies in the Season 11 Grand Final. The Furies were looking to make it back-to-back premierships after winning in Season 10 and they succeeded with The Gumbies going down by 20pts.

Despite being Minor Premiers there was little shame in losing against a team that were in the middle of a Furious Dynasty that had them win three premierships in four years (S08, S10 & S11).

Season 11 would also see captain Ninty hand over the reigns to Peterss after 2 strong years as captain. This was possibly a sign of things to come as the activity of The Gumbies would steadily drop away from this season to Season 12.


S13 and S14 - Rebirth of The Gumbies
After a disappointing Season 13 both on and off the field, The Gumbies decided to build on some solid recruiting by starting a serious rebuild of the club. These recruits would include StFly (S12), Claypigeon (S13) and Lion Cub 16 (S13) who would eventually form the leadership group in the following seasons.

Through out Season 14 the team would cop the tag of inactivity despite showing marked improvement on the previous season. The Gumbies would cop this on the chin though and use it as motivation to continue the rebuild they had already embarked on.

S15 - The Beginning
During the Off-Season leading up to Season 15 the team would continue this recruitment which would see it turn over nearly half of it's list. Other clubs have done similarly but a minor point of difference is that most of The Gumbies recruits have come from outside the league, a nod to the leadership's ability to attract new players to the club.

During Season 15 Pre-Season, The Gumbies would blood much of their youth dropping the Ninty2Winty to the bench and pushing new players into core roles on the field to encourage them, reward activity and create a hunger in the group. The karma-like reward for this would see the Gumbies make the Grand Final of this competition.

Unfortunately it didn't translate to the Premiership season as the Gumbies found their way to their first wooden spoon in the club's history.

S16 - From Worst to First
After claiming the wooden spoon the previous year, spirits remained high at the beginning of Season 16 as they all concluded that they could only move up. The team quickly adopted the message "Year of the Clay" and it could be seen chanted through every match thread, against every opponent.

This upbeat tempo proved successful as the Gumbies finished 2nd on the ladder after the Home & Away season in a stunning turnaround of form. The Gumbies weren't content with that though as the marched onwards with the sole aim of claiming their maiden Premiership.

First Qualifying Final V East Side Hawks
Their first game of the SFA Finals Series would be on the road against the East Side Hawks. The Hawks would lead at every change but the Gumbies slowly closed the gap and took the lead in the last quarter, only to have PooMonkey equalise for the Hawks. At the 12 minute mark, Matt121 missed from point blank range to give the Hawks a 1 point lead in a low scoring quarter. But as the clock ticked over to 13 minutes, the floodgates opened for the boys in blue with goals to Krazy Kris, BoshtrichBurger, Redemptionin09 & Teeth149 as the Gumbies ran out 23 point winners.

Second Semi Final V Fighting Furies
Next up were the Fighting Furies in front of a sell-out crowd at the House of Gumby. There wasn't much to write home about though as the Gumbies got demolished by a clean, technically sound Furies outfit who shot out of the gates, never to be seen again as the yellow and black won by a very convincing 70 points.

Preliminary Final V East Side Hawks
Due to the unique nature of the SFA Finals Series that year, the Gumbies moved on the Preliminary Final against the Hawks yet again who had already lost twice that series. The House of Gumby was sold out again although it was slightly easier to spot opposition supporters this time but for the fans that showed up, they were not disappointed. In a complete reversal from the week before, the Gumbies were handing out the punishment as the Hawks went down by 63 points. This set up a clash yet again with the Fighting Furies and would be a rematch of the Gumbies only other Grand Final appearance back in S11.

Grand Final V Fighting Furies
Gumbymania had exploded as hundreds of thousands of fans made the trek to Boncer's Castle for the S16 Grand Final. Little did anyone know, just how historic this game would become. The Gumbies lead at every change albeit by 10 or less points. Their inaccurate kicking kept the Furies in with a chance all day and they looked to strike as fightingfury_88 put the Furies ahead 100-99 early in the last quarter. After a miss by wotdoiput, Filthy Sanchez slotted a goal from point blank to give the yellow and black a 6 point lead at the 12 minute mark.

With Jeremias 5th behind for the day, Gumbies fans couldn't bare to see another loss eventuate to the Furies. The cool head of winty shone through as he kicked his 4th for the day and put the Gumbies ahead by 1 with 10 minutes remaining. It was at the 20th minute when the Gumbies began to dream as the standout Best and Fairest for the Gumbies all season, Mr Gor, kicked home a marvellous goal that put the Gumbies up by 7 and looked to seal the fate of the Furies.

The Furies wouldn't be discouraged though as they took just 90 seconds to bring the margin back to just 1 point. The last 3 minutes would be a vicious tussle for possession as the Gumbies ran the clock out to hold on by 1 point in what many are calling the best Grand Final in the history of the Sweet F.A.

BoshtrichBurger would cap it off by winning the Deestroy Medal.

A flurry of change hit the Gumbies to start season 36. Former captain DenieD retired meaning Falconista took on sole captaincy, long-time players Rodney Dangerfield and Brick Loosener headed to other clubs and a member of the class of '33 Supercheapgiants retired.

S37-present: An outbreak of incrementalism.
A period of rare stability followed the premiership triumph. The Gumbies mostly avoided losing key posters and continued the program of recruiting rookies, while on-field, finals appearances remained a regular occurrence.

The Gumbies suffered a huge blow in thje offseason as they bid farewell to club great Barrybran, leading the club to pivot further to newer leaders cats_09 and Falconista. It didn't knock the club off its axis though as the season began with three wins and ended after a ninth consecutive finals campaign.

Season 39:

On-field, this is one of the most perplexing seasons in the history of the league. The Gumbies winning a respectable 7 of 16 matches, yet finishing with the dismal percentage of just 78.76 (fifth worst in league history and worst by a non-wooden spooner). One positive though was after a nearly 200-game career of class, GWS Goose was finally awarded an All-SFA berth. Posting also looked up with the return of three former Gumbies and the boon-recruitment of the highly-regarded Cactus_.
