And now for something statty:

The Gumbies are by far the best defence of season 34 (thus far). We concede only 76.2 points average which is two goals better than the next best team (Baghdad).
rye and The Foolback are taking the league by storm sitting top 10 for disposals and dream team points amongst the rookie crop.
Eight Gumbies have four or more goals so far this season including the Fred leader.
Dory_77 is 3 away from 200 career kicks.
The skipper, DenieD, is just 17 away from 1000 carer disposals.

High Five... why?

We just won 5 in a row

We knew this was going to be a big game to justify our premiership credentials coming up against last season's grand finalists East Side Phoenix. Our confidence was high with 4 wins in a row and a number of our players in stellar form. The game started off a little shaky with Phoenix kicking the first 2 goals of the game as they put us on the back foot. Steadying goals from Dory_77 Catsnlakers and our full forward Barrybran got our confidence back as we went into quarter time 8 points in-front.

The second quarter started out much like the first, with East Side kicking the first 2 goals and jumping out in-front again. Goals from beez and miggs helped to stem the flow, but Phoenix overpowered us for the rest of the quarter. We gave up 5 goals to our 3 as we went into half-time 4 points down. The third quarter was where we strangled the life out of the Phoenix forwards as they went goalless from our dominant defenders. We managed to kick 2 goals late to wrestle the game back in our favour and go into 3 quarter time up by 6 points.

The final quarter was when we gave it everything we got. We bombarded their defence with goal after goal in the first 10 minutes, opening up a 24 point lead. We thought that was game over and turned off, but then Phoenix managed to kick 3 goals in quick succession to bring it back to just 6 points. CatToTheFuture was the hero with just 2 minutes left, got to work in the ruck and then kicked a goal from outside 50 to win the game.

Catsnlakers had a good game at half-forward with 18 disposals, 4 marks and 2 goals
I was wasteful in-front of goal with 3 behinds, but still contributed with 18 disposals and 6 tackles
Dory_77 and Barrybran battled it out again in the forward line with 2 goals 1 behind apiece from 3 kicks each. Get a room you two.
CatToTheFuture was best in the ruck with 13 hitouts compared to the opponents 7
Sky was our only forward to not kick a goal during the game, but still contributed a great deal with 17 disposals, 4 marks and 3 tackles

Time on ground:

bone2468 had just 11% time on ground as they went off at the 10 minute mark and didn't return on field
BlueE had only 22% time on ground with most of it coming towards the end of the game

The great victory over last season's Grand Finalists moves us down to 2nd... wait what? Oh bloody hell. Demons won by 80 points and jumped us on percentage. Great. At least we are now entrenched in the top 4 with 5th placed Swamprats being 2 and a half wins behind us.

Last round we saw a season best with 18 Gumbies posting in the match thread- brilliant to have you all active. Next up, we have last seasons premier, the Roys who are generally a very chatty lot. Hoping to see many of you involved again.

One player has essentially a quarter of all frees (23 of 93) we've received this season- GWS Goose!
miggs is making the most of their move forward- 6 disposals, all kicks, for 4.2
This season, Catsnlakers is averaging 15.83 disposals per match. In each of their three previous seasons, cnl averaged less than 10 per match.
Rodney Dangerfield sits on 249 Gumbies goals. One more and Rodders will sit outright second in Gumbies history.
I am six away from 1000 career DT points. Let's see if I squeak over the line this weekend.

Losing by 1 point hurts

But losing by 1 point twice in a weekend hurts so much more (beez )

Coming up against the reigning premiers we were prepared and confident that we had what it took to beat them. We got out to a hot start by kicking the first 2 goals of the game, but then got complacent as Roys kicked 5 goals to one the rest of the first quarter. We had a much better second quarter, kicking 5 goals to 3 as we caught up on goals to only be behind by 6 points from the Roys inaccuracy.

Roys held us goalless in the third quarter as we struggled to get the ball. They kicked 2 goals to bring the margin out to 18 points at 3-quarter-time. It seemed like we were going to fall away, but we knew we had the leg speed in the 4th to catch the Roys. Roys maintained their 3 goal margin well into the 4th quarter, but we had all the run in the last 10 minutes, achieving the last 6 scoring shots of the game. Unfortunately 4 of them were behinds from inaccuracy as we failed to go ahead with ossie_21 kicking the final behind of the game. We lost by 1 point, but are still hopeful in the team as we were competitive against the reigning premiers.

GWS Goose was at his best in the midfield with 11 tackles, 21 disposals and 6 frees for
CatToTheFuture was everywhere as a ruckman with 10 hitouts, 28 disposals and 3 goals
Brick Loosener kept up his great form on the wing with 22 disposals and 7 marks
Barrybran kicked 5 goals to maintain his lead in the FRED medal
In defence: StFly had 12 disposals and 9 marks at centre-half-back, and The Foolback had 18 disposals and 4 marks on the half-back-flank
NSWCROW had one free for and no other stat (very odd indeed). I guess we took the advantage?

Time on ground:

No one got under 40% ToG this week which is a win for our coach
bone2468 had the least with 42% ToG
NSWCROW had 53% ToG
BlueE had 65% ToG but still managed to get 10 disposals and 2 marks during the game

Our great percentage keeps us in 2nd place despite the loss

Coming up against the reigning premiers we were prepared and confident that we had what it took to beat them. We got out to a hot start by kicking the first 2 goals of the game, but then got complacent as Roys kicked 5 goals to one the rest of the first quarter. We had a much better second quarter, kicking 5 goals to 3 as we caught up on goals to only be behind by 6 points from the Roys inaccuracy.

Roys held us goalless in the third quarter as we struggled to get the ball. They kicked 2 goals to bring the margin out to 18 points at 3-quarter-time. It seemed like we were going to fall away, but we knew we had the leg speed in the 4th to catch the Roys. Roys maintained their 3 goal margin well into the 4th quarter, but we had all the run in the last 10 minutes, achieving the last 6 scoring shots of the game. Unfortunately 4 of them were behinds from inaccuracy as we failed to go ahead with ossie_21 kicking the final behind of the game. We lost by 1 point, but are still hopeful in the team as we were competitive against the reigning premiers.

GWS Goose was at his best in the midfield with 11 tackles, 21 disposals and 6 frees for

CatToTheFuture was everywhere as a ruckman with 10 hitouts, 28 disposals and 3 goals

Brick Loosener kept up his great form on the wing with 22 disposals and 7 marks

Barrybran kicked 5 goals to maintain his lead in the FRED medal

In defence: StFly had 12 disposals and 9 marks at centre-half-back, and The Foolback had 18 disposals and 4 marks on the half-back-flank

NSWCROW had one free for and no other stat (very odd indeed). I guess we took the advantage?

Time on ground:

No one got under 40% ToG this week which is a win for our coach

bone2468 had the least with 42% ToG

NSWCROW had 53% ToG

BlueE had 65% ToG but still managed to get 10 disposals and 2 marks during the game

Our great percentage keeps us in 2nd place despite the loss

The ladder is ours

Now we need to defend it

Our shocking 1 point loss to the reigning premiers last week was a wake up call that we needed to be better. This week we trained hard and took it right up to the Mount Buller Demons in the top of the ladder clash and once again showed we have what it takes to win it all.

Demons got out of the gates strong with the first 2 goals of the game. We steadied ourselves and slowly took control of the game, kicking 5 goals to 1 for the rest of the first quarter. But we didn't stop there, as we knew the Demons were a good team and couldn't let them back in. So we smashed them in the second quarter 4 goals to 1, to be up 32 points at half-time. We felt confident in our abilities, but were still wary of Mount Buller's ability to kick goals quickly.

Most of the 3rd quarter went goal for goal as we tried to maintain our lead and stop the Demons from gaining any momentum. At 3 quarter time we were 29 points up and preparing for one final quarter to give it our all. We knew Demons were going to come out strong to try and claw back this lead and they did. Demons kicked 3 goals in quick succession bringing them to within 3 goals and momentum was on their side. But our full forward Barrybran was having none of it, as he took control of the game kicking 2 goals quickly to turn the game back in our favour. From there it was game over as we cruised to a 25 point victory.

Our team once again loved to pass the ball by hands with rye BlueE beez Rodney Dangerfield Sky and CatToTheFuture all handballing more than 10 times each
Sky played their best game this season with 21 disposals, 10 marks and a goal
GWS Goose got moved mid-game into the backline for his 100th. Despite this, Goose still got 13 disposals, 3 marks and 2 tackles from full back.
Barrybran Dory_77 and miggs got 4, 3 and 3 goals respectively to make for a very formidable forward line that is downright impossible to defend them all
Catsnlakers was our other forward that also kicked 3 goals on the day to keep our scoreline ticking over
I was our only 100+ DT scorer for the game from 18 kicks, 8 tackles and a goal to cap it off

Time on Ground:

Everyone got above 60% ToG this week. Our coach finally figured out a way to balance the interchanges.

This win moves us back on top of the ladder. Now we have to defend it with everything we've got.

When you lose but you're still on top of the ladder

We knew we had the capabilities to win this match against the Dragons, but we found out that overconfidence is one of our downfalls. We got out to a massive lead in the first quarter, kicking 5.5 (35) to 1.1 (7) and well in control of the game. We maintained our lead into the half-time break and became overconfident in our abilities, which ultimately led to us losing in the second half.

A huge second-half fade out by us saw the Dragons kick 8.8 (56) to our 3.1 (19) to end the game. We lost by 12 points with many of us pointing at each other trying to find out who to blame for this loss. Good news is we are still on top of the ladder and have a new game this week against top 2 Bombers. Let's focus on winning again to keep our position on top of the ladder.
