Round Eleven vs Sin City Swamprats at Underground Stadium

We're back in the winners circle and back on track!

In the worst of the rainy conditions, the first quarter was a low scoring slog. As has happened often this season, Dory_77 kicked the opening goal of the match. rye kicked our other goal for the quarter as we hit the first break with a 7 point lead. Our second quarter was less promising as we gave up four of the first five goals to trail by 13. We steadied from there to get the margin back to 5 at the long break.

After an early Barrybran goal in the third, we weren't headed again (although scores were level three further times). Coming away with a 19 point win and the critical four premiership points was a tremendous result.

Statistically, the mids shone with each of Baz, beez, DenieD and Brick Loosener prominent. Mop and rye continued their excellent form while CatToTheFuture and AJMLaird were restrictive again in defence.

Round Twelve vs East Side Phoenix at House of Gumby

Another rainy match, this time resulting in a large win. After conceding the first goal to East Side, we dominated the opening half from there on going into half time 32 points up. Ten goals in a rainy half of qooty was excellent as was the spread of goal scorers.

Quarter three was much of the same with the lead extending out to 51 at the final break. Fatigue set in through the last quarter as our goalkicking accuracy went astray. On field, beez, Mop, Brick Loosener and CatToTheFuture were best on. Dory_77 was also good albeit wayward with 3.6 which means that they've slipped nine back from the Fred frontrunner.

Yeah that was ugly. Give up a huge lead, get back to a one point lead early in the third and let them run away with it again. Inaccuracy around goal was a problem again with us kicking an incredible 8.9 in the second quarter. Sharpen that up, and we can go places this season.

A moment in history for heritage round...

As we all know, the Gumbies have only won one Sweet FA premiership, in season sixteen. But do we know the circumstances?

In season 15, the Gumbies (Geelong Gumbies as they were then) finished last and collected the wooden spoon. The Furies meanwhile had narrowly lost the season 15 grandy. Season 16 saw the Gumbies finish the season second and the Furies fourth although the Furies had by far the best percentage and were considered the best team of the season. Under a different finals system, the Furies convincingly won the semi final between the clubs by 70 to surge into the Grand Final while the Gumbies had to play and win a prelim which they duly did.

The Grand Final was expected to be much like the semi with the Furies at that time a four-flag juggernaut while the Gumbies were playing in just their second decider. In an absolute thrilla-dilla from start to end, the Gumbies prevailed in the end by 1 whole point!


The Furies have subsequently won one further premiership and lost four grand finals. Meanwhile the Gumbies have played one more grand final for a loss (however our opponents that day, the Wonders haven't saluted again).

MORAL OF THE STORY: Playing the Gumbies in a Grand Final will thoroughly damage your clubs future success. Gumbies as we strive for our fourth grand final, there's the added bonus that we can be both winners and wreckers.

Sorry folks, been a ferociously busy period at work, let's catch up on some summaries.

Round Fourteen versus West Coast Wonders at House of Gumby

Earlier in the season, the Wonders comfortably dispatched us by 64 points. Would we do better this time? Numerically yes, just but boy it didn't feel good to be smashed again by those of the West after a good start to the game. NSWCROW in match 250 and bone2468 were our best, both off the half back line which demonstrates our troubles that afternoon.

Round Fifteen versus Dragons FFC at LJP86's Lair

In perfect conditions, our goalkicking was wonderful (author excluded) as we dispatched the Dragons after leading for 90 per cent of the match. Most pleasing was the last quarter where we piled on the goals to gain some much needed percentage. Some huge dreamteam scores were racked up by the mids but our best on was clearly CatToTheFuture who kept his opponent to just 0.2! BlueE scoring a goal in match 100 and the team taking home the win was most pleasing.

Round Sixteen versus Fighting Furies at rfctigerarmy's hippodrome

OK, forget that percentage boost. In heritage round, we got an absolute on-field hiding from the Furies. Hopefully you enjoyed what I felt was a good match thread and the return of some stars of yester-seasons in the legends match. BlueE recorded the first hit out of their career, Dory_77 kicked an outstanding 7 and Tigerlaird starred after being moved to ruck rover early in the match.

The match was also Gumbies FFC's 600th match. We are the fourth club to the mark.

While we are talking about winning, keep an eye on Dory_77 in the final round who is a strong chance of finishing on the Fred Medal podium for the seasons leading goal scorer. Dory will need a huge total in the last round to win it and it'll be fun to experience if they pull it off.

Next up in the final round of the home and away, we play our new rivals, the Ophidian Old Boys. Let's show Ophidian what we're made of and secure a spot in finals. It is essentially a play in game for both clubs, so quite simply let's...WIN!

BlueE brings up the century!!!

In Round 15, our mate BlueE became just the 24th Gumby to 100 Sweet FA games. BlueE was originally recruited at the start of season 29 during the Barrybran and Haydo era. Blue has never been a huge match thread poster but is an active contributor to the club with a continued presence in match threads and the team pm.

Blue has played at both ends of the qooty field and has played primarily black pocket or interchange utility this season. This week though, Blue will move to centre half back where their raking kicks and defensive pressure are going to be put to good use.

BlueE, thank you for your almost 7 seasons (and hopefully beyond) of contributing.

Loosen your pants and jacket, Brick hits 150!​

In this world, there are some pretty popular and useful bricks. Another Brick in the Wall was a hit in 1979/80, Lego bricks are pretty f* good and as we learnt in our childhoods, houses made from bricks are the safest from big, bad wolves (insert your own Geelong Direwolves burn here).

At the Gumbies, we have a brick of a different kind. A brick who likes the canteen wing and can make a profound impact on a match thread in very few words. That brick, is Brick Loosener who played their 150th match against the Fighting Furies. Brick is just the 9th Gumby to that mark joining contemporaries in StFly and NSWCROW.

So, what do we know about Brick?​

This weekend, we have a quarter of the side reaching a game milestone. Jeepers!

Each of CatToTheFuture, ossie_21 and Supercheapgiants reach 50 career games. All recruited prior to the start of season 33, these three have become valued Gumbies players with their contributions to the club and Sweet FA. CTTF and Ossie are regular match thread contributors while Supercheapgiants is a tipping star and has strong contributions to make when it comes to graphical design (hopefully your milestone alert banner meets your standards).








Next up we have someone playing their 50th match for the club and that person is our captain, DenieD. Since transferring from the Warriors, DenieD has been a prominent figure at the club and in the league. It's well known that Den has taken a step back from the league this season but nonetheless has made a fantastic contribution to the club as captain recruiting many (including yours truly) and being a wonderful captain who has all their player's backs. There are not many people who have reached 50 matches as captain of our club, another achievement in a storied career.




Finally, someone we celebrated a few weeks ago for a different milestone. NSWCROW reaches 200 matches for Gumbies FFC becoming just the sixth person to that mark.



Congratulations to all on their milestones. Because we have so many at once, I'll be staggering your position promotion rewards over our next couple of matches. Keep an eye out on future team sheets. ​

Round Eighteen versus Ophidian Old Boys at House of Gumby

The week began with an apology and retirement ( ) from one of our captains. It ended with a team apology to our many supporters and retirement to the bar/coffee shop to drown our sorrows.

Results had gone our way so even a close loss would still secure us finals. It didn't mean we wanted that result though and in the first half, we had the right idea jumping out to a lead of 28 points twice. From there though, those Ophidian reptilians pegged back the margin hitting the front midway through the third. It seemed like we'd metaphorically gone home as the Old Boys extended their margin to 17 in the last. Pleasingly though, we were not bereft of answers and we rallied to re-take the lead. Alas though, the Old Boys kicked the last goal of the match and we were too short of time to complete the comeback.

In the fine weather, most of the team racked up some nice stats. Here's some of the highlights:

• Mop continued their fine form to be a key factor, particularly in the last quarter comeback;
• Jeremias had their best match since returning to the club;
• Rodney Dangerfield was playing a beauty before qoach decided to drag him shorly before the long break;
• ossie_21 racked up 22 touches in a selfless role and;
• Dory_77 kicked another five to finish a very respectable second in this season's Fred Medal. Dory kicked an outstanding 63 goals over the 16 matches.

Despite the loss, we made finals by sneaking into eighth so on we go in our quest for premiership number two.

Our chances of winning are boosted this week with my suspension. Mop has speculated above on the reasons for my omission and for legal reasons cannot go into much detail, but can confirm Play Doh was involved. You can see the vid on my Onlyfans.

The scenario is simple- keep winning. Doesn't matter how ugly we do it, let's buck history and have a winning finals series. Let's #doitforden and it starts with the Bombers this week.
