Please. Gumby vs St Kilda this year was way better than what JD dished up vs Gold Coast

i disagree. i love Gumby, but he got his 4 goals when the game was basically done anyway.

i just don't think his performances have ever lived up to the hype around here (obviously he's had his injury concerns). i'm just not sure he can get any better. with Daniher, the sky is the limit

Why can't Gumby get any better, because he's not 19 years old?

just my opinion. i don't think he will improve a hell of a lot, if at all. sometimes, when players reach this age, what you see is what you get.

i'd rather get games into Daniher, as long as he's physically ok to play.

Thing that is annoying with gumby is that I'd hate for us to have spent all these years building him up, only for another team to potentially reap the benefits. On the other hand, he's shown that his ground game is almost non existent and he's quite slow. BUT is that because he still needs another pre-season or is the gumby we are seeing as good as it gets?

Personally I say play gumby this year as much as possible. We KNOW that JD is going to probably be something special. We still don't really know how good Gumby can be.

And as for talk of losing pears and TBC, that's just madness. Cannot afford to lose our only viable backup ruckman. If pears keeps improving the way he has been, he would also surely stay.

In some ways TBC has shown that he can do pretty much what Gumby can do, plus he is a great ruckman. Just cannot see a way for Gumby to fit in unless he develops significantly over the remainder of the year. If that happens we are in a selection nightmare because there will be nobody we can afford to lose, and no way to fit them all in. lol

buckets n hurls in the backline

herp derp and gumby forward

hooker taking the fletcher role and pears taking small/mediums still frees up the option of swinging hurls/buckets forward also frees up the option of hibbard, dempsey, pears and hooker being lose man best thing about our talls are their versatility could even get hibbard and dempsey into the midfield rotations with that setup who wouldnt want to see the pig in the square i can picture it now ryder taps to watson handballs to hibbard on the burst drills a 60m goal
On one level i like it, but on another having the Hurley/Carlisle switch as an option week in week out is something that has really grown on me. Can't see Gumby improving on that structure.

I think Essendon found a full forward in Tom Bellchambers on Sunday. It remains to be determined whether Carlisle or Hurley will play at CHF as each game determines.

I think Tom Bellchambers had a great game on Sunday but it is a stretch to say we have found a full forward. If he could not play in the ruck Bellchambers would be out of the team for either Gumby or Daniher.

agree with that tbh. probably a better set shot too

no doubt he can be damaging as a key forward but one really good game there doesnt mean he is now a full forward.

I mean Kyle Reimers once bagged 8 goals.

also, why are people so blase about losing Bellchambers? Hille, i would imagine, would retire at years end, and we have noone else to backup Paddy, or replace him if he gets injured. Gumby isn't a ruckman, and I wouldn't be throwing Daniher into the ruck for a few years yet

sorry for the thread hijack.

No one wants to lose TBC because he is a good ruckman and hopefully end up being a great one but the reason with talk about him is because he could easily be the number one ruckman in at least 5 other AFL teams. He won't become the number one at Essendon while Ryder is there, so that's why teams are talking to him now like Pies and GWS.

Short term I'd say it depends on who is injured/unavailable. If its Paddy/Bellchambers then I probably prefer Gumbleton to share in the ruck duties than Daniher (even though Daniher did pretty reasonable in his 2 games for a first year player). Conversely if its one of our key forwards like Hurley then I'd prefer Daniher as I think he's not only our future but is significantly better at ground level than Gumbleton and is quicker and although he gets outbodied a lot i would still play him.

Also since it came up in this thread, I really, really do not want to lose Bellchambers. Everyone who is thinking ooh lets get a high draft pick, you will be totally regretting it when Ryder goes down with an injury and we have a ruck division of Gumbleton and Daniher after what we've been used to lately. Having 2 quality rucks is one of the best ways to ensure a midfield will be competitive and we should not let go of one of our best competitive advantages.

Oh I get that. But it seems like many supporters don't seem to care. You can't afford to only have 1 full time ruck on your list, which we would with TBell going and Hille retiring. Especially one that has shown the potential Tom has. We must keep him, though not for $450-$500k. Need to convince him to stay for a premiership in the next 2-3 years

Bellchambers, straight swap Sidebottom. Done.

In all seriousness, I can't believe the patience of the fans and Hirdy. After watching Joe go about his stuff, I just want to see him play every week. We really missed a trick not playing him in WA where his mobility would have been an asset. Daniher should at least play the next two rounds with the hope of absolutely destroying the Bulldogs and GWS.

The only thing that Gumby has over Daniher is more AFL experience - you couldn't even say Gumby has a stronger body as it keeps breaking down, and hes only managed a lowly 33 games in 7 years at the club. Daniher has shown far more in his 2 AFL games than Gumby has over his entire career.

Daniher - career games: 2 ave disposlas: 16, marks: 6.5, tackles: 1, goals: 1.5
Gumby - career games: 33 ave disposlas: 9.6, marks: 4.8, tackles: 1.5, goals: 1.3

Daniher is also 5 years younger and has far more upside than Gumby. He is 4cm taller and can play ruck - Gumby cant, and theres really no argument that danihers ahead, and theres no club for that would pick Gumby ahead of Daniher if given the chance.....

That's just flat-out wrong

The way i see it is when Fletch goes our backline will be something like this.
Baguley, Hooker Hibberd
Pears Carlisle/Hurley Demspey

The possible talls for fwd line are, TBC RYDER HURLEY CRAMERI CARLISLE GUMBY DANIHER, and you wouldn't want to play more than 3 of them in the one fwd line. With Hurley or Carlisle back, there is still two more talls left. Most likely next year TBC and Gumb will be left out unless injuries so i really don't blame them if they were to leave sadly
